Dish of the Week: Lemon Pepper Honey Fried Chicken from Greens and Gravy

By Wendell Brock

Chef Darius Williams’ Greens and Gravy has been on the scene less than two months, and people are already clucking about the delicious Southern comfort food he serves in a tiny storefront space in historic Westview.

After stopping by for Sunday brunch, we can see why: Williams’ Lemon Pepper Honey Fried Chicken is a knockout.

For $19, you get four pieces of seriously coddled bird, two sides and a biscuit.

Brined for 24 hours in apple cider, fried a la minute (presumably in an iron skillet), and gently drizzled with honey, the chicken is an object lesson in technique and flavor.

Crispy skin gives way to a luscious, pristine interior, and the fluffy square biscuit is just the thing for sopping up every droplet of honey and juice that remains. (If you’re sharing the entrée, do as we did, and ask for an extra biscuit.)

As for the sides, we wholeheartedly recommend the mac and cheese and the collards.

For the former, elbow pasta is tossed in rich cheese sauce and baked until bubbly in a diminutive iron skillet, so hot it has to be placed on a pad. The greens are braised to a velvety sheen with smoked turkey and paired with a little ramekin of watermelon chow-chow, a clever summertime condiment.

In a city blessed with stellar fried chicken, Williams throws down the gauntlet. Just in time for the Atlanta BeltLine’s Westside Trail, a magnificent bird struts into Westview.
