A popular cluster of Atlanta coffee shops is being sold to a Birmingham-based coffee company.
Birmingham, Ala.-based Revelator Coffee Co. is set to purchase Octane Coffee next week, Eater reports. Octane owners Tony and Diane Riffel will stay on for an indefinite period of time as advisors.
The Octane brand will remain in existence in the short term, but will fall under the umbrella of the Revelator name and sell Revelator products within the next year to year and half, Revelator owner Josh Owen told Eater.
Revelator, which opened its first location in Birmingham in 2014, has locations in New Orleans, Nashville, Chattanooga and Charleston, as well as cafes in Atlanta at 691 14th St. and 848 Spring St. NW. Revelator Coffee is also served at West Elm inside Ponce City Market.
Octane has had a presence in Atlanta since 2003, when it opened its first location in West Midtown. Since then, the mini coffee empire has expanded with locations in Grant Park, Atlanta Tech Village and Woodruff Arts Center, as well as two locations in Alabama.
Owen said the acquisition will help Revelator double in size, adding about 75 more employees. Most Octane employees will have the option to keep their jobs, though there will be some cuts. Revelator will also start selling beer, wine and cocktails at all its cafes, following Octane's business model, and is looking to expand its wholesale roasting business.
