Korean restaurant and soju bar to replace Double Dragon in Oakhurst

Son of a Bear will open to the public next week


Chinese food is making way for Korean cuisine -- and soju -- in Oakhurst.

The Korean Wives Hospitality Group, which owns Chinese restaurant Double Dragon, announced Son of a Bear Korean Tavern & Soju Den will soft open in the space this weekend and will open to the public next week. 

 Named after Danjun, the legendary founder of the first Korean Kingdom who was the "grandson of heaven" and "son of a bear", Son of a Bear will serve Korean small plates, fried chicken and entrees such as kalbi jjim and grilled squid. Look for traditional dishes lincluding bulgogi and bo ssam alongside modern Korean dishes such as Kimchi Fried Rice Balls and Cheesy Corn Dogs. 

The food is designed to pair with the Korean-inspired bar, which will serve Korean and local beers, makgeolli, a fermented rice wine, regular soju and soju cocktails mixed with fruits and yogurts. 

Jinkuk (Jay) Lee, who will serve as executive chef of Son of a Bear, previously served as executive chef of Breakers Korean BBQ in Duluth and also worked in kitchen in Seoul and Park City, Utah.

 “Jay is super talented and experienced having cooked in both Korea and The U.S.,” partners Michael Lo and George Yu said in a prepared statement. “He’ll lead the charge in our mission to bring delicious, spicy and flavor packed Korean food and drinks intown...it’s the fun and additive street food that’s young people in Seoul are enjoying after a big fun night out.”

Son of a Bear will be open 5-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

Besides Son of a Bear, Korean Wives Hospitality Group also owns Taiyo Ramen in Decatur Suzy Siu’s Baos at Krog Street Market, and Noona Steakhouse & Oyster Bar in Duluth and the forthcoming Ramen Station in the Larkin at Grant Park, set to open this month.

Double Dragon opened in mid-2017 with an American-Chinese menu.
