Dish of the Week: Chili con queso compuesto at the El Felix

If there’s one thing the self-described "so big" El Felix does not do well, it's subtlety. That's just fine — sometimes you want a large, salty margarita and a plate of enchiladas bigger than your head, or, maybe, regular queso dip seems like it's missing something.

When you're in that type of maximalist mood, head to the El Felix for their chili con queso compuesto, a queso dip with all the fixings.

For those not familiar with queso compuesto, it's chili con queso dip with anything else you want in it. According to the wonderful Homesick Texan food blog, additions can include taco meat, salsa, beans, or even something healthy like kale or chard.

The El Felix pulls no punches, and certainly does not follow the healthy route, adding rich chunks of brisket, smooth guacamole and fresh pico de gallo. It's salty, fatty, rich and very tasty — the kind of dish that hits the spot when you're laughing and imbibing with friends.

Though the menus do differ in some spots, the chili con queso compuesto is available at both the Battery and Avalon locations of the El Felix. At the Battery, the chili con queso section of the menu has no less than five options. There's a queso for all tastes, which is good if you're seeking a more subtle version of melted cheese dip.

The Battery, 455 Legends Place SE, Atlanta, 770-675-6318 and Avalon, 1130 1st Street, Alpharetta. 678-248-5239, theelfelix.com.
