German Chocolate Helm’s Deep Imperial Stout

Three Taverns Brewery, Decatur

Available in 750 mL bottles at the brewery only.

Profile

The original version of Helm’s Deep was brewed in 2016, and aged in different types of barrels, including sherry and bourbon. The result was a high gravity black beer that displayed heady notes of bourbon, oak, vanilla and sweet chocolate.

The new German Chocolate version was aged in Sherry puncheon barrels for over a year. Then toasted coconut and espresso were added. With the sherry producing chocolate notes and the coconut adding distinctive toasted, sweet and creamy notes, it’s said to taste like German chocolate cake in liquid form.

Pair with

This is the kind big, robust beer that calls for sipping on a cool night, or cellaring to see how it develops new and different flavors. But it certainly would make an easy pairing with dark chocolate or, of course, German chocolate cake.
