Better Half is closing this month

The Home Park restaurant will shutter on Oct. 27

Home Park restaurant Better Half announced via email and on its social media accounts yesterday that it will shut its doors at the end of the month.

“So, I gotta tell you something but I’m loath to do it because once it’s out, it’s real. I’m not ready. Sadly, Better Half is going to be saying “good bye.” October 27th will be our last service. From one GA boy to the rest of y’all: thank you for being my better half for the past five years. I’m proud of the hard work my team has put into making this the best restaurant I’ve ever worked in. There are no words to express how much your love and support mean to me and even through the uncertainty, I’m excited to see what comes next. #getfed #betterhalf”

Chef Zach Meloy and his wife Cristina opened Better Half at 349 14th St. NW in December 2013. The pair previously ran the supper club PushStart Kitchen and went brick-and-mortar with the help of funds raised with a Kickstarter campaign. They also ran the restaurant Media Naranja in Costa Rica before returning to Atlanta, Zach Meloy’s hometown.

Former AJC food critic John Kessler sang Better Half’s praises in 2014, citing its spirit as one whose “culinary precision keeps company with good humor and a keen sense of the pleasure principle” and called Zach Meloy an “important new voice.”

AJC food editor Ligaya Figueras said on a review revisit in 2017, “I experienced glimpses of great half the time; Better Half has the potential to be great all the time.”

The restaurant’s signature dish is the "silk handkerchief pasta" made with wild mushrooms, cojita cheese, porcini cream and tomato marmalade (It's the dish Zach made for Cristina on their first date).
