As home to the University of Georgia, Athens is mainly known as a college town. But it got a national nod for its dining scene.

USA Today called Athens one of the South's most underrated food destinations. The article put a spotlight on smaller locales with notable cuisine. Baton Rouge, La., Birmingham, Ala., Lexington, Ky., and Greenville, S.C. also made the list.

The article gave props to chef-restaurateur Hugh Acheson's Five & Ten and The National as two eateries that "put the college town on the map" and as kitchen that produced other chefs who opened eateries of their own their, including Mimi Maumus (home.made), Peter Dale (Condor Chocolates) and Chuck Ramsey (Pulaski Heights BBQ). Vegetarian restaurant the Grit and Creature Comforts Brewing Co. were also singled out as exceptional spots on the Athens eat-and-drink circuit.
