The Hawks completed their first three days of training camp at the University of Georgia on Thursday, which included two workouts each on Tuesday and Wednesday. They weren't the traditional two-a-day workouts as in the past.

The Hawks went through extensive on-court work in morning sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. However, they did very little court work in evening sessions. Instead the session was focused on strength and conditioning, including weight lifting and other work.

"A shift away from the basketball," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said after the final workout Thursday. "Hopefully, we got more done in our morning sessions. Especially (Thursday) morning, I thought the energy and the work that we were able to get in on our third day was significantly better. I think a lot of it was because of our (training) staff has done the last few nights."

It's an interesting concept. Newcomer Ryan Kelly (who will be feature in a story later today) noted the change in philosophy from his first three seasons in training camp with the Lakers with more of a commitment to conditioning.

Budenholzer said the team got more out of morning sessions, especially the third day, after less court time in the evenings.

“I think you get a lot more out of the third day if you manage the first two a little bit different," Budenholzer said. "They worked hard in the evenings too but it wasn’t the same pounding and running and active recovery type stuff."
