FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons return to practice today after their bye week.
Here are the five things they need to fix in order to reach the playoffs:
- Four quarters. The Falcons have played well in spurts on offense, defense and special teams over the first nine games. First-year coach Dan Quinn's challenge is to pull that together into four quarters of strong football. That's what it's going to take to beat Indianapolis, Minnesota, New Orleans and Carolina at least once. Give 'em the win over Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. They'll looking at 8-8 or 9-7 if they can't put an entire game together.
- The offense needs a spark. Roddy White is the stick of dynamite. At least light it. Maybe it will go, "tick, tick, tick, BOOM!"
- Tread lightly on the tempo. The no-huddle might not be the way to go if the defense is not at full strength. If they Falcons speed up things and ends up with the defense out on the field more, that could backfire.
- Clean up the holding penalties. The Falcons have committed 73 penalties for 615 yards and 214 nullified yards (two touchdowns). The opposition has committed 52 penalties for 373 yards and 107 nullified yards. The Falcons need to focus on eliminating the 22 holding penalties. Left guard Andy Levitre leads the team with seven penalties for 55 yards, followed by right tackle Ryan Schraeder with five for 35 yards and defensive end Vic Beasley with five for 20 yards and one penalty declined.
- Turnover differential. Going into the Week 10 games, the Falcons were tied for 16th in the league with an 0-turnover differential. They've committed 14 turnovers and 14 takeaways. (Yes, the pass rush is missing from this list. Not really sure they can do much there to fix the situation other than be Avis and try harder.")
