5 things we learned from Matt Ryan today

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan met with the media, including an one-on-one with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after appearing on 680 The Fan, before hosting his seventh annual celebrity golf tournament to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at the TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth.

Here are five things that we learned:

1. Super Bowl review. Ryan immediately reviewed the Super Bowl loss the first day, second day and third down after the game. He watched coaches’ tape alone.

2. Super Bowl prep. Ryan said the Falcons went all the way back to 2002 to study how the Patriots played against their scheme in order to pick up some tendencies against their defense.

3. Shanahan’s play-calling. Ryan wouldn’t point any fingers at former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan for his play-calling. He contended that once the play is called it’s on the players to execute it. He said he couldn’t audible, in part, because of the personnel grouping.

4. Julio Jones’ big catch. Ryan admitted that he thought Jones’ circus-catch to put the Falcons on the 22-yard line was a game clincher at the time.

5. Camp Brotherhood set. Ryan and backup quarterback Matt Schaub were set to leave for Florida after the tournament to join the rest of the team in Miami for their players-only camp.
