Freeney says he's in touch with Falcons

Former Falcons defensive end Dwight Freeney told Sirius NFL Radio that he's been in touch with the team and that he's optimistic that he'll re-sign with the defending NFC champs in the future on Thursday.

Freeney, a future Hall of Famer, previously said he wants to continue playing. The Falcons, who drafted defensive Takkarist McKinley in the first round 26th overall, wanted to finish their offseason player procurement process before considering to add Freeney.

The Falcons have not responded to a request for comment on the Freeney matter and coach Dan Quinn was not asked about him during Thursday's media session.

Freeney was solid last season in a part-time pass-rusher role. He had a positive impact on Vic Beasley, who went on to lead the league in sacks with 15.5.

The Falcons, who just had their June 1 money, about $4 million, clear from cutting defensive end Tyson Jackson may believe he can still contribute and help mentor McKinley.
