The Falcons signed wide receiver and special teams maven Courtney Roby, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, today, according to the team.

The Falcons created a roster spot by releasing wide receiver Dominique Croom on Tuesday.

Roby, 31, was the Saints’ special teams captain before being released in their cut-down to 53 players last season. He's 6-foot-1 and 189 pounds and played at Indiana.

Roby was with the Saints from 2008 to 2012..

His biggest contributions were made on special teams as a return man and on punt and kickoff coverage. He was a “gunner” on coverage teams.

He played in 62 games with the Saints and was voted special teams captain by his teammates in 2011 and 2012.

He averaged 25.6 yards on 94 kickoff returns and had a 97-yarder for a score to open the second half against the St. Louis Rams in 2009, to help the Saints to their ninth win in a row to open the season while they were on their way to winning Super Bowl XLIV.

He was picked by the Tennessee Titans in the third-round (68th overall) of the 2005 NFL draft. He played with the Titans from 2005-06 and had a brief stints with the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts in 2008 before landing with the Saints.

Roby is the cousin of former NFL punting legend, the late Reggie Roby.
