Falcons' offseason spotlight: WR Devin Fuller

FLOWERY BRANCH -- UCLA wide receiver Devin Fuller was selected by the Falcons in the seventh-round (238th overall) of the 2016 NFL draft.

UCLA wide receivers coach Eric Yarber gave the Falcons a trusted scouting report on Fuller. Yarber coached in the NFL for five seasons and was on Falcons assistant head coach Raheem Morris’ staff in Tampa Bay for two seasons.

Fuller’s mother is Cindy Mizelle, a backup singer who’s toured with Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross.

Fuller was slowed by a hamstring strain at the rookie minicamp.

THOMAS DIMITROFF on Fuller: “He’s a guy that overriding theme, versatility, has the ability to catch the ball and run routes as a receiver. He also has in our minds some budding ability to be a return specialist, and we’re going to be working on that, as well. Again, to get him in the seventh round, though not overly productive this year, he had more production last year, we’re looking for him to continue to develop.”

DAN QUINN on Fuller: “A former high school QB, terrific ball skills, has both played inside in the slot and then outside along with the return ability. (We’re) so thrilled to put him in the mix, both as a receiver and as a returner.”

Q: Can you be a vertical threat in the NFL?

A: “I can definitely bring that to the pros. Hopefully, with Julio [Jones] and I know they have Mohamed Sanu now. I just can’t wait to be working with those guys.”

Q: Would you be thrilled to work with Devin Hester?

A: “That’s been my dream to always be categorized with him because growing up I was always a Miami Hurricanes fan and just watching him throughout my life. I just wanted to be him in every way so to work with him now and learn all of his things is only going to help me be a better player.”

Q: Are you happy with your decision to go to UCLA after being an Army All-American high school player?

A: “I wouldn’t change anything that happened in my UCLA career. It’s help me become a better man and the coaching staff got me ready for this moment. I’m just ready to take on the task at hand.”

Overview: Fuller had just 24 catches last year as a senior. Fuller was a former Army All-American athlete prospect out of high school. He struggled to find a niche in UCLA’s offense. He shuffled between playing some slot as a junior to playing outside as a senior in 2015. He also has potential as a kickoff and punt returner. He won the Captain Don Brown Memorial Award for most improved player on offense at the annual team banquet. He played in 11 games and made seven starts last season.  He's one of the top combined kick returners in the nation. Fuller returned 12 punts for a 11.8- yard average and 17 kickoffs for a 24.2-yard mark (ranked 6th in Pac-12). His total of 194 return yards in the game against BYU (114 - kickoff and 80 punt) was one of the best in the conference  and included a 56-yard punt return
