This week the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will present the world premiere of a work in 15 movements by Atlanta composer Christopher Theofanidis titled “Creation/Creator.”
Theofanidis uses full orchestra, chorus, vocal soloists, and some non-traditional instruments including electric guitar and saxophone. The piece, he said, focuses on the relationship between God and humanity..
Robert Spano will conduct the orchestra and the ASO Chorus, while James Alexander provides stage direction for the actors. Spoken word artists will recite poetry and texts from religion, science and philosophy.
Both performances will be recorded live for a compact disc.
Theofanidis is a member of the Atlanta School of Composers, and this piece is presented with support from Emory University, the Georgia Humanities Council and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation..
Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Tickets are $20-$99. For information go to: aso.org.
