With a backlog of travelers waiting to sign up for the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck trusted traveler program, temporary enrollment centers including one at an Atlanta airport hotel will open this summer.
There will be "pop-up" centers around the country making up a TSA PreCheck "enrollment tour" run by MorphoTrust, the company that manages the PreCheck IdentoGO enrollment centers.
The “tour” will stop in Atlanta Aug. 16-20, when a temporary enrollment center will be open at the Courtyard Atlanta Airport South in College Park, according to MorphoTrust. Travelers can make appointments online three weeks in advance of the opening of the temporary enrollment center.
"The permanent enrollment centers have been somewhat crowded, or you were not able to get a quick or a short turnaround of your scheduled appointment," said Charlie Carroll, MorphoTrust's senior vice president of enrollment services. The temporary centers are "in direct response to the increased volume and the increased demand that we've been experiencing that really goes back to April, and escalated and gained momentum in May and in June."
PreCheck membership, which costs $85 to enroll for five years, allows travelers the chance to go through expedited security screening with shorter lines.
There are permanent TSA PreCheck enrollment centers across the country, including at Hartsfield-Jackson International, on Clark Howell Highway and on Century Boulevard NE in Atlanta and in Cartersville.
But some travelers have been frustrated with weeks-long waits to sign up for PreCheck.
To meet the demand, the temporary enrollment centers will open at various locations around the country during different periods of the summer, including in New York, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, Las Vegas, Boston, Minneapolis and Houston, in addition to Atlanta.
"It's really geared for those markets that have been extremely busy," Carroll said.
The temporary center in Atlanta is expected to enroll about 1,000 people during its week-long run in August.
