More lane closures are coming to Hartsfield-Jackson International as the airport launches another phase of construction, to prepare for the installation of huge canopies that will cover the domestic terminal curbside areas.

The world's busiest airport said starting Oct. 30, outside Terminal South one exterior lane and one lower level lane will close.

That follows the some lane closures that started at Terminal North started at Terminal North two weeks ago, with two outer lanes closing and one lower roadway bus lane and sidewalk partially closed. The lane closures have contributed to increased congestion for shuttles and other vehicles that use the outer lanes.

The canopy construction work will continue until late 2018, when the airport said the canopies will "provide a dramatic entrance" to the domestic terminal and shield travelers from the elements.

The project will also add pedestrian bridges from the parking garages to the terminal, reducing the need for travelers to cross the busy roadways and the stop-and-go of cars braking for pedestrians.
The canopies are part of a much broader $6 billion expansion and renovation planned at Hartsfield-Jackson over the next 20 years. The work will include the addition of Concourse G, renovation throughout the domestic terminal and concourses, and eventually a sixth runway, among other projects.
