Hartsfield-Jackson opens registration for 5K on the runway

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has opened registration for its annual 5K on the 5th Runway.

The race will be held early on the morning of Sept. 22, 2018, and will be hosted by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Airport officials call it “one of the flattest -- and fastest -- courses in metro Atlanta.” This year will be the fourth annual 5K on the 5th Runway.

It’s also a certified 5K course and a qualifier for the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

The Atlanta airport’s fifth runway was dubbed the “Most Important Runway in America” when it was built and completed in 2006.

The 9,000-foot runway cost $1.28 billion to build, with two bridges crossing I-285. Known as runway 10-28, it was seen as critical to relieve air traffic congestion along the East Coast.
