Temperatures warmed up Friday and they’re expected to reach the 60s by Sunday.

Atlanta reached a high of 55 degrees, following days with below-freezing temperatures, according to Channel 2 Action News. More than 3 inches of snow was dumped on parts of metro Atlanta, closing schools and government offices.

Currently, it’s 42 in Atlanta, but 6 mph winds are making it feel like 38. The latest forecast calls for highs of 56 Saturday and 62 Sunday. The average high for this time of year is 52.

“Above-average temperatures are expected through Jan. 28,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Despite the warmup, some roads are still iced over and too hazardous for travel. Officials are urging people to drive with caution.

More than 1,100 traffic accidents were reported in Gwinnett County during the storm, police said. Cobb County police investigated 308 vehicle accident calls between midnight Tuesday and noon Thursday.

Black ice is also to blame for a crash early Friday that sent a Fulton County police officer to the hospital with a broken arm and left another driver with a possible head injury, Cpl. Partrena Smith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The crashed happened about 1 a.m. on Old National Highway and Pleasant Hill Road in south Fulton County after temperatures dropped below freezing and roads throughout metro Atlanta refroze, Smith said.

Many schools were closed, including districts in Atlanta, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton. Gwinnett County Schools were on a two-hour delay, and Marietta City Schools were on a three-hour delay.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College was closed Friday but plans to reopen Saturday, spokeswoman Zaundra Brown said.

MARTA is operating on a modified schedule, the agency said.

The next chance of precipitation isn’t until Monday, when there is a 60 percent chance of rain.

Don’t worry, Nitz said.

“This time it’s going to be all rain,” he said. “No snow.”
