Sunday’s cold start was a welcome change for metro Atlantans longing for winter weather.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said temperatures dropped from the 50s into the 30-degree range overnight.

But temps warmed up quickly.

Temperatures about 4:30 p.m. were 62 degrees in Atlanta, 55 degrees in Blairsville and 65 degrees in LaGrange.

Rain is on the way this week, Monahan said, due to a warm front moving in.

“It’s not going to rain everywhere,” Monahan said. “It’s not going to rain all day. It is not going to be a washout. But we will see upper-level disturbances moving in along this front, bringing the opportunity for scattered showers, perhaps a rumble of thunder on the south side during the day on Monday.”

Monahan says a better chance for storms will come later in the week.

Temperatures are expected to increase on Tuesday, with highs in the mid-70s and a chance of isolated storms.

Strong storms are possible Wednesday into Thursday, Monahan said.
