An Orlando-based group that has been teaching girls tech-based skills for five years has landed a grant from the Nielsen Foundation.
Tech Sassy Girlz — which hosts workshops, tech company tours and other educational events — will receive $12,500 to support its efforts, the group announced recently.
“The Foundation’s support of our organization helps to raise our profile and hopefully will attract more interest in our cause and the impact we’re making for future women in STEM,” Tech Sassy Girlz Founder Laine Powell said in a news release.
Since its start in 2012, Tech Sassy Girlz has had more than 700 middle school and high school students through its programs.
The award comes as more organizations, businesses and educational groups focus on younger students for STEM-based skills training.
Tech Sassy Girlz has been trying to raise the profile of minority girls, which statistics consistently show trail in studies that assess tech-based jobs skills.
“We are committed to making a global impact in these areas to enable the next generation of leaders, and we are thrilled to support Tech Sassy Girlz as part of this mission,” the Foundation’s Executive Director Crystal Barnes said.
Harris CEO lands top space post
A Melbourne-based Harris Corporation executive has been named to a top post of an organization that bills itself as the voice of the U.S. aerospace and defense industries.
William Brown, who has been at the helm of Harris since 2011, will serve in 2018 as the Aerospace Industries Association’s Vice Chairman.
Raytheon CEO Thomas Kennedy will serve as the association’s chairman next year.
“We are engines of research and development, innovation and manufacturing,” Kennedy said in an AIA press release announcing the appointments. “We are one of our nation’s great sources of rewarding, good-paying, noble jobs that help millions live the American dream.”
AIA’s executive committee next year includes high-ranking officials from Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Cubic, General Electric and The Boeing Company, among others.
