Until Mike Mitchell returns to the field, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be starting Robert Golden at free safety.

Mitchell got hurt during Week 8 win against the Detroit Lions, and Golden filled in for the rest of the game. The Steelers are coming off of a bye week and will return to the field against the Indianapolis Colts. Mitchell has been limited at practice on Wednesday and Thursday with the achilles injury that he suffered against the Lions.

When Mitchell missed Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, safety J.J. Wilcox filled in. But since then Golden has moved up the depth chart.

“I think when it comes down to it and it’s time to win games, the coaches have a lot of faith in me and put me in,” Golden said, via Penn Live’s Lauren Kirschhman. “I just want to continue to be that guy that can go in there and be the next man up.”

The Steelers signed Golden as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He started three games in 2015 and seven games in 2016. However, the Steelers felt the need to trade for Wilcox prior to the start of this season.

In four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Wilcox started in 38 games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Wilcox to a two-year, $6.5 million contract this past offseason, but traded him to the Steelers after signing former Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward.

That’s a lot of money that Golden is keeping on the sidelines.
