Cowboys VP Stephen Jones: uncertainty surrounding Tyron Smith’s status against Falcons

The Dallas Cowboys might be without left tackle Tyron Smith for a pivotal Week 10 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith has been dealing with a back and hip injury for weeks that has forced him to miss some practice. After the Cowboys most recent win against the Kansas City Chiefs, Smith said that he suffered a groin injury. He was listed on the Friday injury report as questionable after not practicing all week, but there is uncertainty surrounding his status for Sunday.

“We don’t know [if he’ll be able to play Sunday],” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s Ben and Skin show, via the Dallas Morning News’ Jon Machota. “It’s a concern whether he’ll be able to go or not. We haven’t ruled him out, but it’s certainly a big question mark.”

If Smith cannot play on Sunday, then backup tackle Chaz Green will take his place.

This could not come at a worse time for the Cowboys. They are already without running back Ezekiel Elliott who is serving the first of a six-game suspension for a violation the NFL personal conduct policy. Through one and a half seasons, the only game quarterback Dak Prescott has played without Smith or Elliott was Week 17 last year, when Elliott did not play because the top seed in the NFC had already been clinched by Dallas.

If Prescott has to go even one game without both players, he will be facing his biggest test as a professional.

The statistics say that it’s time for Denver Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch, now that he’s healthy, to get the start. Not Lynch’s own statistics; he hasn’t played at all in 2017 with a right shoulder injury. Not even Brock Osweiler’s statistics. Just the team’s record in general. They’re 3-7,...
