New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo is only in his second year with the team, but there have already been rumors that the team has quit, that he’s lost the locker room, and that his time as a head coach is all but over.

After all, the Giants have lost star wideouts Odell Beckham and Brandon Marshall – among others – to injury. They’ve only won one game all year, beating the spiraling Denver Broncos. Though they’re technically not eliminated from the playoffs, their season is realistically over already. It’s not the competitive year fans and the team itself expected.

Many players have stood behind McAdoo, especially as rumors that he lost the team swirled during the week. Players like safety Landon Collins have spoken out in his favor and against the unnamed players who reportedly said he was no longer controlling the team.

Is that enough to save his job, or is he done? Some believe there’s only one way he can keep it into 2018.

“So, now that the team’s locker-room leadership has made it verbally clear it backs McAdoo, the players must make it physically clear they’re ready to back him,” wrote Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. “Win some football games. That starts Sunday at Levi’s Stadium against a decimated 0-9 49ers team they should dominate, and must continue for the seven weeks that follow That’s McAdoo’s only chance to make it to Year 3 as the Giants head coach. Right now, even after an 11-5 rookie season, getting to Year 3 looks like a long shot — particularly if the suggested locker-room mutiny is as true as the two anonymous gripers say it is.”

The Giants aren’t going to the playoffs. But, ending the season on a winning streak and showing some fight in the face of adversity may buy McAdoo another year to right the ship. Going 1-15 might earn the team a top draft pick and cost McAdoo his job as ownership tries to reboot.
