This preseason, Ted Roof coached his son T.D. as Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Now Ted Roof is at N.C. State and T.D. will transfer to Indiana.

Following his father’s departure from Georgia Tech for N.C. State, Tech linebacker T.D. Roof will transfer to Indiana. The younger Roof, who played one season with his father, Ted, as his defensive coordinator, made the announcement from his Twitter account Thursday.

After starring at Buford High, T.D. Roof made the decision to attend Tech in part for the opportunity to play for his father, something he hadn’t done since he was 5 on a coach-pitch baseball team, playing with his twin brother Mic. That he was doing so at the school where his father starred made it even more special.

“He’s always wanted to do that, and I’ve always wanted to do that with him,” T.D. said this June of playing for his father, just before he enrolled for his freshman year.

However, Tech’s defense failed to live up to expectations and, facing the loss of his job, Ted Roof accepted a co-defensive coordinator job at N.C. State on Friday. This season, T.D. largely played a special-teams role, but also had two sacks.

As a high-school prospect, T.D. was recruited by Indiana. He will have to sit out the 2018 season and then will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

For Ted Roof and family, a Father’s Day like no other
