Last week, Georgia Tech quarterback Matthew Jordan said that he expected to be cleared from foot surgery in time for the start of preseason camp. On Friday, his coach agreed.

“He’s way ahead of schedule,” Paul Johnson said at the ACC Kickoff. “Actually, I talked to (sports medicine director Jay Shoop) (on Thursday) and we expect him to be full go in fall camp.”

The leading candidate to follow Justin Thomas as the Yellow Jackets’ starting quarterback, Jordan suffered a foot injury midway through spring practice that required surgery. He has been receiving daily treatment on the foot.

Johnson said the competition will be “as open as it can be. Certainly, Matthew’s the guy with the experience. He was the No. 1 quarterback when he got hurt. It’s probably his job to lose. Those guys have to beat him out. But like I said, I think we’ve got four guys who all bring a unique skillset, who all can play. I can call a game for any of them, I think.”

Jordan will compete with junior TaQuon Marshall and redshirt freshmen Lucas Johnson and Jay Jones. Incoming freshman Tobias Oliver also will join the group.
