ATLANTA — Oklahoma star Baker Mayfield is a fifth-year senior, a three-year starter and a product of a pass-first offense. And yet he sees plenty of similarities between himself and Jake Fromm, the Georgia freshman quarterback.
“I do,” Mayfield said, when asked if he sees any of himself in Fromm. “It takes a special person as a freshman to take command of an offense like that, with guys that are veterans that have been there for awhile. So he has command of the huddle. So I do see some similarities there.”
Mayfield was speaking Wednesday night on the eve of the national College Football Awards Show, where he is expected to take home some hardware. More should come on Saturday night, when Mayfield is the odd-son favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
Then comes the team part: Mayfield and Oklahoma will face Fromm and Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, the winner earning a spot back here in Atlanta in the national title game. Mayfield spoke about the match-up extensively, with clear respect for Georgia and its defense. He called it “strength against strength.”
But Georgia’s offense also has the eye of Mayfield, including a senior receiver he wished was on his team: Javon Wims, who took a recruiting visit two years ago when he was in junior college.
“We really tried to get him there,” Mayfield said of Wims. “A talented player. Obviously that shows in the plays that he’s made there. He’s an impact guy. He’s a guy that you throw the ball up and he’s going to go get it while the ball’s in the air. And so a lot of respect for him. He’s a guy that I would’ve liked to throw the ball (to), so I know Jake’s enjoying that.”
There was one uncomfortable subject to bring up: The status of Oklahoma starting tailback Rodney Anderson, facing a rape allegation. But The Oklahoman has reported that charges against Anderson are unlikely.
Mayfield, speaking on Wednesday night, spoke to the character of Anderson.
“I know who Rodney is as a person,” Mayfield said. “I’m not a part of the legal system. But if you ask anybody at OU, anybody from Katy (Texas, Anderson’s hometown), what type of guy he is, I don’t think anybody would have anything bad to say. I don’t know all the stuff in the situation. But I know there’s stuff that I think will prove who Rodney is.”
