The Yellow Jackets gained an NFL-sized defensive tackle on Wednesday when Austin Smith signed his letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound prospect verbally committed to Ted Roof’s defense on June 23. He chose the Yellow Jackets over 27 other offers from the likes of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Memphis.

Smith, who played at Ola High School in McDonough, is rated as the 78th best defensive tackle in the county according to 247Sports Composite. He racked up 37 tackles this season for the Mustangs.

Smith shows a good ability to get off blockers by overpowering them with his size. The Yellow Jackets don’t graduate a single contributing defensive tackle, so Smith should bring added depth up front.
