New Newnan High coach Chip Walker has been around Georgia Tech commit P.J. Harris only a few months, but he has seen enough.

“Outstanding work ethic,” Walker said. “All he’s concerned about is being a good teammate and a good player. Everything you want in a wideout. And that’s rare today.”

Walker came to Newnan from Sandy Creek High, where he sent a number of players to Tech, including Calvin Johnson, Andrew Gardner, Isaiah Johnson and Corey Griffin.

“I think he’s a perfect fit in terms of academics, and I think he’s a perfect fit in terms of the type of kid they’re recruiting,” Walker said. “He’s 6-3, 215 pounds. He’s physical. He’s a matchup problem for corners. I think he’s a perfect guy for that offense.”

Harris committed to Tech in January, but did not publicize his decision, not particularly caring for the attention . During spring practice, Walker said, visiting college coaches were interested, but Harris made clear the firmness of his decision.

“I think he would have probably had a bunch of offers, but I think he was happy with what he had,” Walker said.

In that regard, Harris reminded Walker of Isaiah Johnson, who became a three-year starter for the Yellow Jackets.

“He wasn’t offer-chasing,” Walker said of Johnson. “He wanted to be the best football player he could be. He wanted to be the best teammate he could be. And that’s kind of the way P.J. is.”

Harris’ commitment became public last weekend, at the same time that three other high school seniors were committing to Tech. The 2018 recruiting class now stands at four.
