There will be plenty of connections between the two coaching staffs on Saturday night in Norman, Okla. when No. 5 Oklahoma hosts No. 6 TCU for what is effectively a playoff-elimination game.

Two individuals on TCU’s coaching staff — offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie and offensive analyst Sonny Dykes — have both worked alongside first-year Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley in an entirely different Big 12 setting.

Riley and Cumbie were both teammates during the 2003 offseason at Texas Tech. Riley moved into a student-assistant position for both the 2003 and 2004 seasons — Cumbie’s final two years as a player for the Red Raiders.

Dykes, meanwhile, served on the Texas Tech coaching staff in several different capacities from 2000-2006. All three overlapped at one point. Dykes and Riley remained on staff together until 2006.

Dykes is the son of the late Texas Tech football head coach Spike Dykes. Spike oversaw a school-record 82 wins as head coach until Mike Leach surpassed him during the 2009 season.

Riley and Cumbie have already coached against each other as offensive coordinators the past two seasons. Now, all three will have a role in the same football game once again on Saturday.
