Georgia Tech was nearing a sellout Tuesday for its Thursday night matchup with No. 2 Virginia at McCamish Pavilion.
It would be the first sellout of the season for the Yellow Jackets. As of Tuesday, fewer than 300 tickets remained for the 8,600-seat arena. It is a significant game for the Jackets, who are 3-1 in the ACC and have won four games in a row. It’s the first time that Tech started ACC play since the 2003-04 season, when the Jackets reached the national championship game.
The visit to Tech by the No. 2 Cavaliers will be the first by a team ranked No. 1 or 2 in the AP poll since January 2008, when No. 1 North Carolina faced the Jackets in the old Alexander Memorial Coliseum, an 83-82 win for the Tar Heels.
Tech has won four games at McCamish against teams ranked in the top 15 of the AP poll since coach Josh Pastner’s hire prior to last season – No. 9 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida State and No. 14 Notre Dame last season and No. 15 Miami on January 3. Remarkably, Tech won all but the Notre Dame game by 10 or more points.
