Seven runs in the second inning gave Georgia Tech the boost it needed to defeat Marshall 11-3 on Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Trevor Craport, Joey Bart and Kel Johnson hit homers in consecutive at-bats. The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 before Craport’s two-run homer. Two of Tech’s first three batters made outs before any of the runs scored.
Leadoff hitter Wade Bailey was 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Austin Wilhite was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Making his first start since March 20 of last year, redshirt freshman Jonathan Hughes struck out a career-high seven hitters and allowed no run in four innings.
Ben Parr (1-0) pitched a perfect fifth inning, while Jay Shadday, Ben Schniederjans and Robert Winborne each pitched an inning and did not allow a run. The three runs were scored in the ninth inning off Bailey Combs, who also allowed three hits in his one inning on the mound.
The Jackets are 2-0, including a 5-3 season-opening victory against BYU on Friday afternoon.
