The Sun Belt Conference announced this week its new divisional format for football, which will take place in the 2018 season.

The league lineup will consist of two five-team divisions: Georgia State and Georgia Southern in the East with Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina and Troy, and Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama and Texas State in the West. The division winners will meet in the conference championship game.

The league’s method for choosing the site of each season’s championship game is rather interesting. The league chose to play the game at the divisional winner that occupies the highest spot in the College Football Playoff ranking.

That sounds like a good idea, but an interesting note is that in three seasons of the CFP, no Sun Belt team has finished in the final ranking, nor has one appeared in one during the season. The league did not announce how the site will be determined if no team is ranked.
