Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on Florida State: ‘Their record has zero to do with their ability’

Florida State is currently 3-5 and in the midst of one of their most disappointing seasons in several years. They are at risk of missing a bowl for the first time in over 35 years. Several of their key players, including quarterback Deondre Francois, have been injured.

What does that mean to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney as his Tigers prepare to face the Seminoles? According to him, not much at all.

Swinney is taking a cautious approach to Saturday’s matchup, even though the Tigers currently sit at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Despite the Seminoles’ mark, he hopes that the Tigers will not read too much into it by taking their opponent lightly.

Their record has zero to do with their ability. You’ve got to look behind that…It’s easy to just say, “Oh, (Florida State) is 3-5, they’re a bad team,”…No. They had Miami zero points at the half. Zero. Everybody’s got Miami as one of the best teams in the country. So this is a team, they’ve had some tough breaks, they’ve had some hardships.

While some might take this as simply coachspeak, there is truth to what Swinney is saying. However, in the case of the Seminoles, they just haven’t been able to sustain a run of success at any point throughout the season. Will an opportunity to knock the Tigers out of the College Football Playoff motivate them? We will find out.

Florida State and Clemson kick off on Saturday at 3:30pm ET. The game will be shown on ESPN.
