A night to remember: Chaos at the 1986 Georgia-Auburn game

Georgia and Auburn play Saturday in Auburn, Ala. The game will take place 31 years after the schools met in one of the wildest nights in college football history.

The Bulldogs upset the favored Tigers 20-16 that night and hundreds of fans ran onto the field at the game’s conclusion. The public address announcer at Jordan-Hare Stadium warned fans to stay in the stands but some continued to celebrate on the field by pulling up pieces of turf.

An Auburn official made the decision to turn powerful industrial water hoses on the fans on the field, then later, inexplicably, onto fans in the stands.

The Hawks’ record – tied for worst in the NBA -- has taken a predictably big bite out of the team’s local TV ratings this season.  Ratings for Hawks games on Fox Sports Southeast have fallen 50 percent in the Atlanta TV market from the same point last season, according to SportsBusiness Journal’s  semiannual analysis...
Norovirus precautions overtake Olympic tradition
Norovirus precautions overtake Olympic tradition

The 22nd-largest team at the Olympics: Zamboni drivers

The Winter Olympics are a global competition, with athletes representing 92 countries. But one event is dominated by Americans and Canadians like no other: Zamboni driving. It is conspicuous, this army of 37 mostly imported Zamboni drivers, doing their quiet, mesmerizing work of resurfacing the ice, back and forth on their big machines, when the action...

Dale Earnhardt won Daytona 500 with her lucky penny glued to dash; that moment endures

Admittedly, this is not my story to tell.   It all began in 1998, when Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 for the only time in his legendary career. The day before that race, a girl named Wessa Miller gave Earnhardt a lucky penny. He glued it to his dash on the spot, and the next day, that penny was in the car as Earnhardt crossed the finish...

Dodgers All-Star Cody Bellinger plans to avoid a sophomore slump

Cody Bellinger slipped through the netting of a Camelback Ranch batting cage and gazed at a pitching machine. Dodgers hitting coach Turner Ward manned the contraption, which dolloped late spin onto each offering. Bellinger slashed a pair of line drives before whacking a few foul and others into the ground. “That’s a big-league knock,&rdquo...
