Hawks will take ‘few days’ to fill available roster spot

The Hawks will take at least a few days to determine how they will fill their open roster spot, coach and president of basketball operations Mike Budenholzer said Monday.

The Hawks have an available spot after Lamar Patterson was waived Sunday. The team and Patterson mutually agreed on the release so Patterson could deal with a personal issue.

“We will probably take a few days and see what happens over the next few days and maybe more,” Budenholzer said. “It’s good to have that flexibility to figure out what we want to do. We won’t rush to do anything in the next day or two.”

The Hawks desire a third point guard on the roster. They have done without the position for most of the season. With starter Dennis Schroder suspended for Friday’s game, the Hawks used Tim Hardaway Jr., Kent Bazemore and Thabo Sefolosha to bring the ball upcourt and initiate the offense behind backup Malcolm Delaney. Budenholzer has used the rotation many other times this season.

Budenholzer would not comment specifically when asked about Brandon Jennings, who was waived by the Knicks Monday. He said the Hawks will look at a number of scenarios and players.

“We have our list whether it be the overseas guys, guys playing in the D-League and guys who have been bought out or potentially might be bought out,” Budenholzer said. “We’ll put all that on the board and see what we want to do.”

The NBA’s Playoff Eligibility Waiver deadline is March 1. Any player who had waivers requested on him by his team after March 1 is ineligible for postseason play, according to the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Ressler won’t second-guess contracts of Howard, Bazemore

This summer, the Hawks committed $140 million to Dwight Howard and Kent Bazemore. Principal owner Tony Ressler is not about to second-guess those sizeable contracts, though they have been the subject of much fan angst during an up-and-down season and even now during the Hawks’ playoff run. The Hawks evened their best-of-seven Eastern Conference...

Hawks’ Budenholzer has reaffirmed the obvious: He can coach

For anybody who is wondering how the Hawks have gone from playoff flat-lined to tied 2-2 in their series with the Washington Wizards, here are the three most pertinent metrics: Turnovers: They committed 39 in the first two games, but only 24 in the next two (points-off-turnovers differential: 15). Three-point shooting: They made only 11 in the first...

Hawks owe Warriors thank you after Calderon stepped up big in Game 4

The letter may already be in the mail. Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer joked he might need to send a thank-you note to the Warriors for the circumstances that landed Jose Calderon in Atlanta. In the most poignant moments of the veteran point guard’s eight weeks with the team, Calderon provided a spark and quality minutes in the Hawks’ 111-101...
