In most any analysis of Dave Stewart's moves as general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the deal that sent Dansby Swanson to Atlanta in exchange for Shelby Miller ranks among the worst.

Stewart tends to agree.

The former GM appeared on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday and expressed regret for trading the Braves’ Rookie of the Year contender.

Stewart, who was a sports agent before being hired by Arizona, told hosts Jeff Joyce and Jim Bowden he was reluctant to make the move, but still did it in hopes that Miller would be “everything I thought he would be when I traded for him.”

Listen:

Miller was an All-Star in 2015, finishing with a 3.02 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 205.1 innings pitched.

Swanson, from Marietta, was the Diamonbacks’ No. 1 overall pick.

The deal also brought outfielder Ender Inciarte and pitching prospect Aaron Blair to Atlanta.

Stewart, who at one time represented Braves outfielder Matt Kemp, was fired in 2016 after two seasons (148-176) with Arizona.
