Braves set to begin final spring training at Disney

Braves baseball will return on Feb. 23 when Atlanta opens Grapefruit League play against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla. It will be the Braves’ final spring training at the Disney facility.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report Feb. 13, while play around the league will open on Feb. 23 or 24. Atlanta will play 33 games before the start of the regular season, with 18 coming at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Braves’ first home game comes Feb. 26 against the Nationals. The Braves will play their final home game at the Disney facility on March 24 against the Yankees. They will conclude spring training in Florida against the Tigers in Lakeland on March 25, four days before opening day.

Atlanta wraps up its exhibition schedule with two games at SunTrust Park on March 26-27. The Yankees visit on Monday, while the Braves Future Stars game is Tuesday.

The organization broke ground on a new spring training site in North Port, Florida, set to be tenable in 2019. The Braves have trained at the Wide World of Sports since 1998.

West Villages in North Port will host the new facilities. The Braves wanted a more centralized site, with their current Orlando-area location resulting in longer travel times. Their new home will be within an hour of five other teams.

The 2018 spring training exhibition games will begin Feb. 21 when Arizona hosts Arizona State in Scottsdale. The Braves won’t face any unique opponents this spring; just the usual major-league rivals, including the Tigers, Yankees, Blue Jays and Astros of the American League.

Three of the Braves’ home games are scheduled for evening starts: the Yankees (March 9), Phillies (March 12) and Tigers (March 21). Each will begin at 6:05 p.m.

March 29 marks the earliest opening day in MLB history, a result of a new format set by the Basic Agreement between MLB and the players association. It will also be the 12th season, and first since 2011, to begin on a Thursday. Every team will open on the same day for the first time since 1968.

The Braves will hold their first opening day at SunTrust Park when the Phillies visit on March 29.

Chipper Jones Q&A, Part 1: What he’s been up to, Hall of Fame outlook

It’s been five years and 3 ½ months since Larry Wayne Jones, aka Chipper, strode to home plate for the last time in a major league game, slowed by age and injuries but still with a distinct gait that exuded confidence and swagger and so much of what made No. 10 the player Braves Country loved and opposing fans, particularly in New...

Braves sign arbitration-eligible Vizcaino, but not ‘Folty’

The Braves signed reliever Arodys Vizcaino to a one-year, $3.4 million contract to avoid going to arbitration with their top closer candidate, but didn’t agree to a deal with arbitration-eligible starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz before a Friday deadline. That means Foltynewicz is likely to become just the second arbitration hearing in 17 years...

Braves sign Dan Winkler to one-year deal, avoiding arbitration

The Braves signed reliever Dan Winkler to a one-year, $610,000 contract Friday, avoiding arbitration with the right-hander. After he missed much of three seasons recovering from two major elbow surgeries, Winkler made an impressive return in late August, posting a 2.51 ERA and .152 opponents’ average in 16 appearances and allowing seven hits...

Braves sign Sam Freeman, avoid arbitration with lefty

The Braves signed reliever Sam Freeman to a one-year, $1.075 million contract Thursday, avoiding arbitration with the left-hander. Freeman, 30, was eligible for arbitration for the first time after posting career-best statistics in 2017 with the Braves, his fourth team in four seasons. He was 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 58 appearances and had 59 strikeouts...

Max Fried ready to compete for Braves rotation spot

They don’t make movies about the Arizona Fall League. It ain’t glamorous. Less than six weeks after Max Fried beat the Cubs at sold-out Wrigley Field in his first major league start, and just nine days after working 4-1/3 innings on short notice in the Braves’ season-finale win at Miami, the left-hander found himself facing the Glendale...
