Acuna, Toussaint, Riley make AFL ‘Fall Stars’ game roster

The Braves’ best prospects have taken over the Arizona Fall League. Three of them were selected to play in the AFL ‘Fall Stars’ game on Saturday.

Outfielder Ronald Acuna, pitcher Touki Toussaint and third baseman Austin Riley will play in the game. It will be broadcast on MLB Network.

Acuna and Riley have appeared as two of the most advanced bats in Arizona. Riley at one point hit for the cycle, the first in the AFL since 2008. Acuna had a two-homer game four days ago.

Each player has hit three home runs, though Braves catcher prospect Austin Jackson leads them with five. Both Acuna and Riley could debut next season, with Acuna likely to be on the opening day roster.

Toussaint, meanwhile, has overpowered hitters at times. He has 10 strikeouts in 6-1/3 innings. He spoke with the AJC as the season was winding down about how the Braves’ environment has helped his development.

A former first-round draft pick, Toussaint projects as an upper-tier strikeout arm. His stats haven’t reflected dominance (9.95 ERA), but stats shouldn’t be taken too seriously in the AFL.

Questions have been answered, Braves’ Albies ready for full season

Ozzie Albies made solid contact on a couple of pitches during his final found of batting practice Tuesday, then walked out of the batting cage, sauntered over to a reporter and said, “I’m ready.” Two days into full-squad workouts, the 21-year-old second baseman with the bulging biceps was brimming with confidence. So much has changed...

Moylan pushing 40, still a bullpen workhorse and clubhouse comedian

When you pitched in as many games as anyone in the major leagues the previous season, it’s easier to laugh about your relatively advanced age. And if you’re Peter Moylan, self-deprecating humor has long been part of your wide-ranging popularity anyway. So here was Moylan, a 39-year-old Aussie reliever and one of the more beloved Braves...

Aussie Moylan remembers when Ronald Acuna created a stir in Australia

Peter Moylan is back for a third stint with the Braves at age 39, and the gregarious Aussie reliever’s locker stall is directly across the mostly prospects-filled half of the Braves’ clubhouse from a kid barely half his age whom Moylan was teammates with in the Australian Baseball League two winters ago.  You may have heard of the...

‘Big-hit’ Charlie Culberson has come home, looks to impact Braves

If you’re not familiar with new Braves utility player Charlie Culberson, you certainly are not a Dodgers fan.  They know him well in Los Angeles, and some there hated seeing him included in the five-player December trade designed for the Braves to dump Matt Kemp’s contract and for the Dodgers to move four players including three with...

Snitker puts Braves on accelerated spring plan

The Braves will play spring training games after just four days of full-squad workouts. Drastic times call for somewhat drastic measures, or as much so as manager Brian Snitker is willing to get. He extended the first full-squad workout well past 1 p.m. Monday – about an hour longer than usual – and also had hitters face pitchers...
