Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said although NFL owners have not finalized their contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, the owners are confident the deal will get done, according to a report by the Washington Post.
The chairman of the owners' compensation committee that controls Goodell's contract negotiations, Blank told the Washington Post after the NFL owners meeting Wednesday he's pleased with how the negotiations are progressing.
“It’s not ‘done done,’ ” Blank said. “But we’re making good progress that we would expect to make.”
The five-year extension that’s currently being negotiated would keep Goodell as Commissioner through 2024.
Goodell and select owners including Blank met this week at NFL headquarters in New York to discuss player protests at the Fall NFL owners meeting.
A few players who have been most vocal in player protests of police brutality and social injustice joined the owners and Goodell on Tuesday to communicate openly about why they have protested and what the NFL can do to resolve the concerns raised.
The Fall owners meeting ended with the NFL not creating a rule requiring players to stand during the national anthem, which was blasted by President Donald Trump on Twitter.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Goodell explained the NFL did not create a rule demanding players stand for the national anthem because the League wanted to address the issues the few players who protest are raising.
