6/20: Hung, the interview
By: Rodney Ho | June 20, 2007, 5:37PM EST

I decided to just post a new blog entry here for my interview with William Hung because well, why not?

william-hung-1.jpg

Here is Hung with Syrus Yarbrough (“Real World: New York”), Billy Kemp (casting for “American Idol” and dozens of other reality shows) and Kristen Johnson (“Fear Factor,” “Treasure Hunters”). I know, I know. Kristen who??? CREDIT: Rodney Ho

As an Asian-American male, I’ve always had mixed feelings about Mr. Hung. It’s not really his fault but for some reason, there are no popular Asian American singers. As a result, if you asked the average person, they could probably only come up with Hung. That’s sad.

Hung appeared on season three and is the most memorable entity from that year except for Fantasia thanks to his bizarrely bad take on “She Bangs” and his earnest response to the criticisms. In the end, he has managed to carve out quite a career as a side-show curiosity. He didn’t dispute Randy Jackson’s contention earlier this year that Hung has made more than $1 million from commercial endorsements, corporate gigs (he did a Microsoft party in Atlanta in 2004), random event appearances (like his time at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2004) and three CDs which have in total outsold most “Idol” contestants. His first two CDs moved more than 400,000 copies total, but third one in 2005, not so much.

As most of you know, the basic joke is Hung can’t really sing particularly well. He can’t dance well. He’s not Brad Pitt. He’s dorky. But he’s got an endearing innocence about him. And he hasn’t really lost that despite this odd C-list fame he’s achieved.

He’s now 24 years old, a bit heavier than he was in 2004 but visually the same. At the press conference, he wore a Hawaiian shirt, khakis and slightly slicked back hair.

He still lives with his parents, Henry and Stella Hung, in Los Angeles. As his manager and agent, they book his gigs and negotiate his contracts, basically running William Hung Inc. His mom even flew to the press conference today with him to promote the “Dreams N2 Reality” seminar he’ll be attending in August 4 at Philips Arena. She didn’t want to be interviewed but I did see her talking to the organizer about how they were going to get paid. (Half for coming to the press conference, half when he comes to Atlanta in August.) When I asked what they did for a living before “Idol,” he said, “They want to be private. Let’s talk entertainment.”

I get the impression his big paydays are well behind him, that there’s diminishing returns being William Hung, “Idol” reject 2004. I tried to get specifics about his recent gigs and upcoming gigs. He said he has done some “regional” commercials for Hollywood Tan and Mitsubishi. And the only example of a public appearance (beyond this seminar) he could scrounge up is an upcoming event judging a talent contest at a horse park in Oklahoma City called Remington Park. Here’s the press release with this breathless lead sentence: “The buzz continues to build in anticipation of William Hung and his performance on Karaoke Championship Night at Remington Park on June 28.”

His Web site has not had an updated “upcoming appearance” since January 2007, though I’m not sure if that means anything. He said he doesn’t have a basic rate, that everything is negotiable. So if you want him at your wedding or summer pool party, feel free to email him!

Shockingly, when he does play judge at these talent contests, “some people want me to be Simon but I’ll never be Simon. I’m more like Randy. I’m not going to say anything meanspirited.” (I can’t imagine anything meanspirited coming out of his mouth, actually.)

He still has to sing “She Bangs” a lot but he really enjoys “Achy Breaky Heart.” (Take that, Billy Ray Cyrus!) He said he performed it on “Larry King Live” earlier this year. Dang. I missed that!

Hung isn’t a man of stupendous observations. I asked him, for instance, about Sanjaya. “He’s very unique,” Hung said. “It’s hard to describe him.” Hard to describe Sanjaya?

As for changing his look or fixing his overbite, Hung said he has no plans to do so. “I don’t really need to change,” he said. “The record company [Koch Records, which released his three CDs] likes the way I am. And I like the way I am.”

He’s not dating and hasn’t had any serious girlfriends despite the fame. “I’m still a little shy,” he said. (I can’t imagine living with his parents helps him in this category.)

“I want a relationship that lasts,” he added. “I’m a little conservative. I just want someone who really understands me.”

As for the issue of him perpetuating negative Asian stereotypes, he demurs. “Of course not! That’s terrible. I tell kids the same thing: ‘Never give up. Believe in your dreams!’ I believe I’ve become an inspirational symbol. That’s not a negative stereotype.”

Then Hung said what I thought was his most true statement when I asked, “Do you think there is a point where you won’t be able to sustain yourself as a celebrity?”

“Not yet. But there is a natural cycle in the entertainment business. So if I have to stop, I can get my degree [he was a junior at Berkeley pursuing a civil engineering degree when he tried out for “Idol”] and choose another goal in my life.”

6 to 12 grand is a little above my budget but I would love to have one of those things.

Posted by: KPH on June 20, 2007 5:51PM EST
Later Linny have a good evening!

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 6:22PM EST
okay, what is a table top computer? I figured it was not a joke and that the two of you were not joking.

The william hung interview was interesting to me because i never read what is going on with him. I was starting to wonder if he was a bit like the two guys who were made fun of this year, but the "Berkeley" comment killed that idea. I am gonna assume someone has confirmed that to be true. I hope he is having fun; it seems a little like he is beign used by the parents and is about to run out of steam. I also wonder if his parents convinced him that he didnt need to move out. Boy the money that saved them.
I suggest an audit to see where the money went and where it is going. Too many child stars were robbed by their loving parents; so i distrust all parents except mine.

Okay, i have too much time on my hands right now. What can i say?

Posted by: Rodney Ho on June 20, 2007 6:28PM EST
He certainly hasn't spent his $1 million on wardrobe or plastic surgery!

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 7:20PM EST
I am watching Extra right now. (Again, tooo much time on my hands). I see AJ, former co-host of 106 and Park has a regular gig as an interviewer on that show. Rodney, is there anyway to find out how much of a salary hit, positive or negative, he took leaaving that show and taking this gig? I am not sure how he lasted as long as he did on that show. It isnt bad, but it is definitely for a much younger crowd.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 8:03PM EST
Wellll, SYTYCD is on!!!

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 8:10PM EST
Lauren and Neil look really good.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:13PM EST
hey lvr!!

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:16PM EST
Okay, they were better than last week, but i know what my problem will be with this group. Neil reminded me so much of Blake Lewis tonight that i was ready to vomit. One Blake per year is all i can take. The hat, the blake shirt and white tie was Blake reincarnated!!
WEre they the first ones? I am also watching The Next Best Thing.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:22PM EST
SYTYCD can not be live. How are the judges able to say what they like and the video appear immediately following the statement. Either they asked the techs to have it ready to cue up or this show isnt live. Help me!

pasha and his partner..........NO No NO No.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 8:22PM EST
Yeah, I think we are the first. Yes, Neil does remind me of Blake, too.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 8:23PM EST
I don't like that style of dance.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:26PM EST
Dont you think the judges go on and on and on and on and on and for no reason?

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 8:34PM EST
Yeah, they do. I dont' really like Mia as a judge. This Samba is nice but not the best i've seen.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:39PM EST
While they were dancing, i was thinking it wasnt really a Samba. I was basing it totally on what i have seen on Dancing with the Stars. It seems Nigel agreed with me. I liked what they did but it was potluck dance.... just a little bit of everything.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 8:47PM EST
Now they were good! Dominic and partner.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:02PM EST
Cedric and his partner were kind of boring! I have noticed it is easier for me to remember the guy names.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 9:04PM EST
Cedric is with Faina. Dominic is with Sabra.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 9:05PM EST
I didn't really like Cedric and Faina. I didn't like Faina last week either...

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:15PM EST
The jazz number to me was no where near as good as last week. It was just a performance for me, good, not great.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:20PM EST
I wish they would shorten the show by getting rid of the extremely long intros before EACH performance and the extremely long judge's comments. The only positive: It gives me a chance to watch Next Best Thing and The American Inventor.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 9:22PM EST
Yes, tell me about it. Here's the backwards splits couple... Anya and Danny.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:26PM EST
I had been waiting for Danny all night and i get the waltz. Hiss hiss boo. I guess i will not get a backward sliding split tonight. No problem... youtube has it.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:32PM EST
I am not impressed at all this week. This week was like AI Latin Week. Glad it is over and hope to never see it again. Which AI week was the worse week ever this season? That week everyone stunk. 70's week ... Barry Gibb Week. That was it. This was not as bad or as boring as that week, but it was in the ballpark. American Inventor is better.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 9:40PM EST
THe poor impression of the "Stomp the Yard" dancers was not good for me.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 9:49PM EST
Yeah, its not really holding my attention either. now we are getting the Paso Doble. I HATE this dance.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 9:57PM EST
Well, I think I liked the first couple, Lauren and Neil, the best

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 10:02PM EST
i think this dance was better than several of the others tonight. We will have one less couple next week. I sure hope this show will be an shortened by at least a half hour.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 10:06PM EST
uhmm, probably not. but we can hope!

Posted by: linnykat on June 20, 2007 10:11PM EST
gawd... were we watching the same show? i think every single dance was incredible... i have to agree that faina is not one of my favorites... something about her expressions bothers me, but cedric is CRAZY good...

i don't see how one could choose tonight... everyone really brought a level of excitement to the stage... you have to remember... these kids are doing something pretty incredible:

1 - original choreography by some very DIFFERENT people -- the choreographers are picking music and making up routines that these kids learn in about 5 days.

2 - MOST of the time, the style/genre of dance is something that these kids have never done before or only one of the partner has done before -- to take a b-girl (sara) and have her do a latin dance like the paso doble ... and do so well... FIRST time in heels! NO classical training in ANY genre... dayum!

3 - MANY of these kids have NEVER danced with someone as a direct partner, even if they've danced (i.e., street dancing) in groups

4 - MANY of these kids have NEVER had one moment of formal training in the classical dance forms

5 - conversely, MANY of those formally trained have NEVER done anything like hip hop, step, or break dancing

I am constantly amazed and stunned and thoroughly entertained by not only their performances, but the background on who they are and how HARD they work to go forward on this kind of show

and i ABSOLUTELY love the "dance off" style of competition, which gives the bottom vote getters a chance to "show their stuff" ... and as ricky and ashley last week found out, if that "stuff" is not brought with 1000% effort -- buh bye!!!

i think one has to step back from thinking about traditional dancing and realize exactly what these kids are having to do, recognizing the skills they bring to something that is virtually brand new to them ... even if the particular TYPE of dance is not something you would normally watch...

*whew* sorry.... Linny toes the soapbox back under her desk and takes a deep breath.

all i know is, i don't think *I* could have done what THESE kids do ... although i like to think i would if i COULD, lol!

Posted by: linnykat on June 20, 2007 10:15PM EST
ok, and i do not mean this in a MEAN spirited way, or in a negative way, but... i have a question...

if both of you are so down on the show, why watch it at all? not that i want you to stop watching, or to stop commenting ... but i don't see much POSITIVE in your comments, which makes me wonder what the attraction is for you, if you're not enjoying it.... does that make sense?

it's a serious question, not sarcastic, not rude, and if it sounds that way, PLEASE accept my apology in advance... and tell me if it made you feel that way (lol, i can take it)

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 10:19PM EST
i can agree with your points, and i know i cant do what they do. Yet they were so much better last week. This week was boring for me and your points, although good, didnt change my mind at all. The judges drag their comments out far too long to just kill time. The backgrounds can certainly be shortened, since we have seen portions already. Tell me more a bit at a time. Tonight was just TOO much and in a bad way. It will be even worse next week because the show will still be two hours.

Again, (for me )the best thing about tonight's show is that i got to see American Inventor!

Posted by: linnykat on June 20, 2007 10:22PM EST
*laughing* ok, not really trying to change anyone's mind, just to open up other possibilities... seems sometimes we get so mired in our expectations that we miss the magic....

but that's my point of view *smile*

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 10:22PM EST
Just saw your question. I watched tonight because i really liked the show last week. I wont run back to watch next week. I think it will be my commercial show (what i turn to when a commerical comes on the other show) for next week.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 10:23PM EST
I saw only a small glimpse of magic tonight.

Posted by: linnykat on June 20, 2007 10:25PM EST
*shaking my head*

to each his own ... i thought tonight was incredible *laughing*

but it would be realllllly boring if we all felt the same, anyway, so .... c'est la vie!

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 10:34PM EST
Linny, how is this show different than AI? Both are about amateur talent that have to learn different genres and styles in a short period of time and most have never been trained.

I cannot sing (at least not good) or dance (at least not the way they can) but would like to think I can comment on what I do and don't like. I seem to remember a lot of comments on this blog about the contestants on AI that weren't always so kind or favorable yet people were allowed to speak their opinions. I didn't think my comments were really all that down on the show.

I watch this show (and AI) because I love watching amateur talent. I wasn't as entertained this week as I was last week but I will watch it the whole season.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 10:44PM EST
Great job Idollvr! Your speech/comment was better than several of tonight's performances. I may not hang in there the whole season. i can always catch them the next day on youtube. That way i can see the performances, while avoding the time wasters/fillers that they must have for whatever reason.

Posted by: IdolLVR on June 20, 2007 10:55PM EST
Thanks, Diane.

I think the judges on SYTYCD seem to have more of a free reign to comment as long as they want than they do on AI (probably because Nigel is a judge and executive producer). Both shows (AI and SYTYCD) have a real problem with the time wasters/fillers to make the show much longer than it really needs to be. Tonight's could have done with an hour and the results would only need to be a half hour tomorrow. It is frustrating to me to have to wait until the last two minutes of an hour long show to find out who is gone.

I do agree with Linny about the format of the "dance for your lives" dance off of the bottom three couples. I think I made that comment last week too.

Posted by: Diane1 on June 20, 2007 11:06PM EST
I saw the "dance for your life" last week and it just confirmed who i thought was going. I was two for two. Of course i wanted John Travolta (white suit Neil) there last week.

Posted by: linnykat on June 20, 2007 11:35PM EST
I'm sorry if i seemed to say i don't want your comments... i DO.... i just wondered, since both you (idol) and diane seemed to feel the show was a waste of time and not very good, why you were watching *smile*... i meant no offense, nor criticism... it was an honest question, and honestly answered, i think.

I was thinking hard about both of your comments about the wasted time and the lengthy comments. However, especially with dance, i think the show would feel crowded, hurried, and hasty if there were NOT significant breaks between the couples dancing. The reason for this comment is that each STYLE is so very VERY different... it is almost, TO ME (and this is opinion, obviously, not fact) that if you crammed one couple right on top, virtually, of the previous, you would not be able to separate the styles .. the mood ... the music, the ... attitude ... of the dancers. I feel it would be more ... oh i don't know exactly how to say this.... i feel it would be harder to compare the SKILL, EFFORT, PERFORMANCE of each couple if they so closely followed that you didn't have time to ... switch gears, as it were.

ON Dancing with the Stars, there are each week, at least at the beginning, only TWO styles of dance, i.e., jive and waltz, or tango and mambo, etc. and no break dancing, lol, for the most part! You're dealing with similar choreographers, similar music, similar styles overall for all the dancers (or each half of the dancers, in the beginning) whereas on SYTYCD, you are dealing with waltz one minute and hiphop step break whatever in the next.

again, just one lady's opinion, lol!!!

and i agree...having nigel as a judge, who WAS a dancer, and who DOES produce the show... makes a difference from Cowell on AI... i think that nigel is more knowledgeable from the INSIDE about the talent, whereas Cowell is more knowledgeable from the money side. That's one reason i was disappointed that there was not a session on AI this year with Clive Davis as "mentor" to try to teach those kids a little bit about the PRACTICAL side of their business....

ok, enough for me tonight, lol!!! i've got to try to get some sleep, morning comes early!

Posted by: Diane1 on June 21, 2007 5:46AM EST
Linny i think you forgot the most important reason to drag this show like they did last night: Safety. I am sure those kids lose at least of liter of water while performing. Add to that the scuffing of the floor, etc. I would think they need time to prepare the floor/stage for the next performance. Even with all of that, the show could have been an hour and a half. Which is basically one of the complaints we had about AI this year. They made the show much longer then it needed to be. Now with one less couple, they will have an additional ten minutes to fill.
Then again, maybe it isnt Nigel, but the Fox network. They might not have a show to fill the time slot if they shortened the show right now.

American Inventor is an interesting show; i am just not so sure about the judges. I am going to have to research exactly who they are and what they each bring to the table. Did one of the guys have a British accent? From what i saw, he seemed to say no as often as George Foreman said yes. Sound familar?

Posted by: flat screen on June 21, 2007 8:38AM EST
LOL!!!!!...DIANE GO TO BED GIRL!!!i heard pacman jones was joining micheal vick and the falcons next year...can anyone confirm this!

Posted by: Mike S on June 21, 2007 8:44AM EST
Actually I am hearing that pacman will be signing a 5-10 year contract with the Nevada Department of Corrections.
At first he will be a tight end, but they figure he will be a wide reciever before to long.

Posted by: Mitch on June 21, 2007 8:47AM EST
Mike, have you heard Bon Jovi's new CD yet?

Posted by: Mike S on June 21, 2007 8:47AM EST
Hey Flats did you see the paint scheme Jeff may run this weekend ... I like it ... instead of the Dupont emblem on the hood he will have one of those yellow "Baby on Board" emblems. No confirmation that he will actually run that paint scheme, but reports are that people who have seen the car say hendrick had it painted that way.

Good morning Flats anyone else awake in here besides us?

Posted by: Mike S on June 21, 2007 8:48AM EST

Hi Mitch and Mike.

I hear ya guys if the punks in the NFL keep this up the Mean Machine is going to be a much better team !

Posted by: Mitch on June 21, 2007 8:51AM EST
I really like it. Some of the songs do have a country flavor to them but the others are classic Bon Jovi. The duet with Big & Rich is really good and there is a duet with Leann Rimes that has the potential to be a big as Who Says You Can't Go Home with Jennifer Knettles.

Morning KPH

Posted by: shay on June 21, 2007 9:35AM EST
Jex, you so stupid!!! I don't have one tooth going to the side. LMAO!!!

Actually, I am preparing to get braces to fix a small overbite I have. And in order to get braces, I have the make sure all else is in place. I didn't really like the silver fillings they put in from back in the day, so I am have those replaced with clear fillings so that when I sing, you don't see nothing but white and it don't look like I have any fillings. Then, I had to get all of wisdom teeth pulled because they were taking up space that is needed to pull my teeth back when they put the braces on.

fith letter correspondence.

And Thank you Shaun! I'm glad there is someone other than me who's still on Vick's side. I'm so sick of these some timey, fair weather fans, I don't know what to do. "He needs to be locked up." "He needs to be fired." "Get rid of him."

Shut up!

Good Morning, folks. Itsa gorgeous day out there! Drove into work with my sun roof open and windows down... Love these low humidity days.

Kimmy, the wisdom teeth pulling wasn't bad at all. They have me some laughing gas, on top of me already being high (kidding!), and I didn't feel a thing.

Shaun, why I gotta be William Hung. My teeth aren't jacked up, trust me!! LOL!!

But before they will put the braces on, they have to correct every single thing in your mouth and since I have an overbite, my teeth have to be pushed back and the wisdom teeth were in the way, so out they came.

And Choc, you are right. I think this last month, I have paid both of their car notes and mortgages.

Kimmy, I am going with Federer too, he is unstoppable on grass. '
I would like to see Venus win, I like Henin, but sharapova, I cant stand her, she is cute though.
I am glad to see Hingis back, she has a good chance too.
Jex, yes I still support Vick, and you are right, when he is back on top, the fairweathers will return.
