4/26: Idol Gives Back raises $60 mil plus
By: Rodney Ho | April 26, 2007, 6:34PM EST
The “Idol Gives Back” charity event Wednesday night raised more than $60 million for poverty outreach in the U.S. and Africa, according to Fox in a press release Thursday afternoon. It’s unclear how much was from corporate donations and how much from individuals.
In comparison, various telethons after Hurricane Katrina raised nearly $100 million, according to the Associated Press. And “America: A Tribute to Heroes,” that aired after 9/11 on multiple TV networks, raised about $150 million for victims of that tragedy.
One recipient of “Idols Give Back” is SafeHouse Outreach here in Atlanta. Our city was picked because it’s Ryan Seacrest’s hometown.
Safehouse founder Philip Bray said a producer at “Idol” knew Dr. Gerald Durley, former president of Morehouse College. Durley recommended “Idol” support SafeHouse. On April 9, producers flew into Atlanta to film footage about SafeHouse, which received about 30 seconds of airplay Tuesday night.
“The main thing was exposing them to the good works and people making a difference in Atlanta,” said Bray, who founded the charity 25 years ago. It now raises $2 million and several million more in volunteer and in-kind services. The organization, he says, draws thousands of volunteers a year and served 187,000 meals last year. Based in downtown Atlanta near the Ritz Carlton Hotel, he says SafeHouse does both preventative and intervention-type outreach featuring mentoring and parenting classes. With more poor people leaving the in-town core (due to rising real estate prices and torn-down public housing), the organization opened a satellite office in DeKalb County a few years ago.
Bray has no clue how much money he’ll ulimately receive.
From the press release, here’s how the charity organization “Idol’ created will work:
CPEF is a new charitable organization established to raise money and awareness to help combat extreme poverty in the U.S. and throughout the world, particularly in Africa. CPEF’s mission is to use the power of entertainment to drive positive change to achieve its vision of creating a just world free from poverty. CPEF is inspired and supported by the UK charity that invented Red Nose Day.
CPEF is a supporter of ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History, a new effort by Americans to rally Americans — ONE by ONE — to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. ONE is a coalition of over 2.4 million people and more than 100 of the nation’s leading relief, humanitarian and advocacy organizations joining together to help save lives in Africa and the world’s poorest countries.
In the United States, CPEF has selected Save the Children, America’s Second Harvest - The Nation’s Food Bank Network, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Children’s Health Fund as beneficiaries of IDOL GIVES BACK. These organizations deliver support to poor children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country, providing them with medical care, food and grocery products, health and life skills, literacy programs and obesity prevention, among other important initiatives.
In Africa, funds will be dedicated to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, Malaria No More, Nothing But Nets, Save the Children and The U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Each organization will receive funds to support efforts to battle poverty through various health and education programs, including delivering medical supplies and providing clean water. These organizations also aim to control and prevent malaria through practical resources and programs, including providing life-saving bed nets and other activities tied to Africa Malaria Day on April 25.

well.... it's been a while since i found one *first*
i hope that MOST of the money WILL indeed go to the charities and programs designated....I'd like to know WHAT PERCENTAGE will go to "administrative" costs

Posted by: linnykat on April 26, 2007 5:58PM EST
lol K, you beat me while i was typing!!!!
my fear is that this huge conglomerate of "charities" and "programs" will eat much of the money on administrative costs... as is often the case. IF most, and by most, i mean over 90%, of the money is actually directly into charitable functions, good. Anything less, in my opinion, is a problem!

I hope so too Linny 60 million in one swoop that is a lot of dough surley most of it will make it to the people who need it.

I wonder how they are going to split the money. The only minor detail they've revealed is half the money goes to Africa, half stays here. I spoke to a publicist who said all these details have to be hashed out by the "Idol" charity group itself. And since it will be an official charity organization, we should eventually have access to the financials and see what percentage actually went to charity vs. administrative costs. I've heard 80%-plus is a good percentage and anything less than 70% is generally not good. But I'm no expert on charities.
|
|
Posted by: linnykat on April 26, 2007 6:15PM EST
i know too that it runs as low as 70-80% and that is my point.... if you can afford to hold the event, by gawd DONATE the administration of it in large part as well!!!
strange day
KPH, if you see this tomorrow, i'm TRYING to get to your friend request and the site keeps kicking me back to the same screen over and over...i'll request you and see how it goes that way!
whoa, had to come back...the code that time was "khp" ... which is pretty darn close to my last paragraph opening, lol!!!

Did any of ya'll questioning how the money is going to be split donate? I personally donated 40.00 and I am sure that my 40.00 is going to help someone. I don't care if 20.00 goes to Africa and 10.00 goes to the US and the other 10.00 pays someone to make sure that these people get the help they need. They also have bills to pay.

Rodney, you are doing a great job and also you keep this blog which I find groovy. Congratulations on your successes! May your blog take 100,000 more hits each day. You deserve it.
|
|
I tried to give on line but the system froze several times. Now I know why. WOW 60 milliion! I just hope that the people who really need it get it. You never hear follow up stories on big charity events showing where the money was spent. I went to college in Savannah. I alway thought it was a strange coinsidence that whenever the school would get a big donation, the president got new furniture for his office. I just hope we don't end up with a lot of new buildings, vans & fancy funrniture for the administrators.

The only reason musicians and movie so called "stars" gave money was so their name would be in the limelight. If they really cared the wouldn't hog all that money just like they accuse "Rich" Republicans of doing. Bono is an ass at best.
|
|
Posted by: Deirdre on April 26, 2007 8:42PM EST
UMMM..I didn't hear any specific names of donaters other than Ellen challenging her celebrity friends to match the $100,000 that she donated. Perhaps we didn't hear their names because they chose not to advertise their generosity.
|
|
Posted by: Mitch on April 26, 2007 8:50PM EST
The point is, NO ONE was forced to donate any money. If you donated it was your own choice to make. Just like with any "telethon", they are going to show what they are trying to raise money for.
As D said, with the exception of Ellen who was making a challenge, we do not know what anyone gave. Quit complaining and at lest be grateful that someone is drawing attention to a worldwide problem.
|
|
Posted by: Negativo on April 26, 2007 8:52PM EST
Whatever they raised would have been better suited being given to charities, churches and synagogues that actually make a difference. These organizations that are affiliated with celebrities are notoriously bad at distributing the benefits. When the money is delivered to Africa, the warlords and jihadis often steal it and use the funds to kill more civilians.
|
|
Posted by: JTesla on April 26, 2007 9:26PM EST
By all means provide some facts to support your hypothesis.
|
|
Posted by: B on April 26, 2007 9:40PM EST
So all of you complaining about administrative costs are just saying you did not donate??? Sounds about right. If you have the time to sit on your computer and post of some pointless blog, perhaps you could have the funds to donate $20 to help someone out.
Negativo, where do you get your facts from? Just curious. Who do you know in these organizations? Better yet, which African warlord do you know that carries out such acts? Which organizations do you know that are notoriously bad at distributing the benefits? Any examples??? Don't just state stupid arguments without any factual information to back it up with
|

Negativo, i guess i wont ask the question that has already been asked twice. I just say ditto to what Jtesla said. You two seem to get along so well, i thought it best to let you respond to him.

Thanks, Deidre.
I am around.
It's been a fun ride this season.
6 great performers left.
I knew that it would not be a let down when I heard Lakisha, Phil, Melinda, Jordin, Blake, both Chris, Gina, Stephanie, Brandon, and Haley auditions.
I think the problem is that it's been done before and people expect, maybe, too much.
Want contraversy? enter Sinjaya. Good kid, ok voice, not a seasoned performer or great snger.
It's been a great AI so far, contraversy and all.
I'll stay tuned to AI and the blog.

B'heart...nice to know you're lurking....I like this season, too. Very good singers who don't quite live up to the personalities from last year...the voices are just as good or better but they lack the audience appeal of last year's group. So what? I think they've given us a pretty good ccompetition so far.
And the rest of you...stop picking on Negativo, He's our resident naysayer.....every good group needs one. And he does his job very well!!!!!

Someone used the phrase, "Jump the Shark" last night and i saw it on the MTV article. Exactly what does that mean? Take on too much, charter in dangerous waters, live dangerously, commit suicide?
So they had us vote to raise money, not vote to safe our favorites? Is that a bad thing, or just a deceptive tactic to get more money? If the coporate sponsors who were giving based on our votes that knew that no one was going to be eliminated, then is all well with the votes cast?
I am not sure how many times i voted, but since i was voting for the underdogs as usual, I am pretty sure i would have voted a little less this week, but with the idea that I would make it up next week. I was voting between braids and that is not an easy job.
While looking at the picture of the Top 6 on the MTV site, I just noticed that there are 3 Black females and 3 white males. I am going to have to pull the race card. Where are the black males? I need my daily eye candy!!!!
Just kidding, but I would love to be looking at a hottie with a voice and a body each Tuesday and Wednesday night. Sorry, but neither Phil, Blake or Chris do anything for me!! I gag if i even think about robbing one of those cradles!!

Rodney I would like to start a petition that the states that the 8-5 bloggers can only post once every 15 minutes. I dont even want to begin to say how long it took me the read/skim the three blogs today in order to have an idea of what the discussions were for today. Of course this petition is only for the next 5 weeks. Beginning June, I think people should blog as they do now.
Hopefully, I have never mentioned my profession.
|
|
Posted by: Deirdre on April 26, 2007 11:21PM EST
Ah but you have mentioned your profession, Diane....Jump the Shark has come to mean when a series goes too far and becomes ridiculous. It comes from an episode toward the end of the run of Happy Days when Fonzie, while water skiing, wearing his leather jacket, jumps over a shark! So completely unbelievable, that it was considered the beginning of the end of Happy Days.
Good night, Diane...I'll 'see' you tomorrow.
|
|
Posted by: JTesla on April 27, 2007 12:10AM EST
Diane, Jump the Shark is my new favorite phrase, but I didn’t just use it because I like it. I felt that not eliminating someone could very well be the moment for me on idol. It could mean more then just ridiculousness, it could be the death or addition of a character that just throws the show way off what it should be.
For more info check out the official page (owned by TV guild I believe) at: http://www.jumptheshark.com/index.jspa
or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark complete with picture of Fonzie on water skies with a leather jacket.

Read below:
Last night's "A.I." charity benefit concert, "Idol Gives Back," included performances by Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban -- even a pre-taped-from-the-crypt Celine Dion/Elvis Presley duet -- which TMZ exclusively revealed on Monday. But Gwen and P!nk -- who had been previously announced as participants -- failed to get any screen time! Oh no they dit'nt!
Both Gwen and P!nk had pre-taped their performances, so their appearances just needed to be edited into the "live" telecast. Sources tell TMZ that the lovely ladies were "cut for time," and their segments should air on upcoming episodes of "Idol."
Did anyone even notice that the girls' performances were missing from the show? no one mentioned it last night. I didnt want to see them anyway, so rather than missing them, I'll just have to dodge them. Why do we have to have them? Did they pay to play or something? Did Idol pay them to play? What gives? What is the big deal?
|
|
Posted by: JTesla on April 27, 2007 12:17AM EST
Actually Diane that reminds me of a question I had: last year there was a lot of talk about the bump that artists who appeared on Idol received, but I haven't heard anything about it this year. Perhaps the pay is the promise of a bump.
Does anyone know if the mentors have been seeing as large of a bump in sales this year?

I guess I'll just research it on my own, which I would recommend to everyone who is considering making donations to any charity. There are several REPUTABLE sites out there for investigating charities

Didn't realize we had a new thread...sorry to post twice!
Hey D...just catching up this morning! No I didn't watch the show so it's really almost pointless of me to make comments. But I do want to say this on corporate charity...it's all self-serving so that they can list it on the Corporate Resume, plus it helps their Wall Street ratings to be seen as a corporation involved with the community (as a former Exec Asst, was privy to those things said behind closed doors of corporate boardroom). These same CEO's will not purchase a box of Girl Scout Cookies (also for a good cause) but when they get the chance to toot their own horn, they open the CORPORATE check book...not their own. Big difference. That is my real gripe with all this self-serving propaganda. Yes it is great that regardless of where the money comes from that there are those who benefit from it. As for Ellen and other celebs...I applaud them. Celebs are generally the first ones in line with an open checkbook to better the lives of others. Okay...enough of my anlalysis and intense dislike of Corporate America! :-)
I watched CMT last night and caught Bucky's new song. He is Number 8 on the top 20 with "Different World" and Carrie is Number 3 with "Wasted". Bucky was so awesome in the video and his success is coming from his talent and not slick packaging for anyone who wants to watch the video and see for themselves. The scene shows a country house with children playing in the yard. No flashy lightshow, babes, cowboy hats or tight Wranglers to sell a gimmick. Just a layed back Bucky playing a guitar on the front porch and walking around the barn, remembering another time when he was a kid. MITCH...I know you have seen this video!!! I'm going out this morning to purchase Bucky's CD. Which says alot about Bucky for a girl who prefers Linkin Park, 30 Sec to Mars and Buckcherry to country music!!

I can admit I did not donate...but I give to other causes that are personally more important to me. We can't give to every charity so all we can do is pick the ones nearest and dearest to our hearts. My picks? Poor, sick elderly and foster kids. And monetary donations aren't the only way to give...many organizations just need volunteers to give their time!!!

Don't hate on Negativo - Negativo is right. There have historically been problems with the money beng distributed after these sorts of big events. Remember all the fundraising efforts and stuff that went on after Hurrican Katrina, and then we discovered how much money was wasted, defrauded or not spent on what people donated it for? The Red Cross in particular took a lot of heat for that.
I donated Wednesday, but instead of going through CPE Fund, I researched the charities they mentioned directly, and made my donation directly to one of the charities whose mission I believe in. If you read the CPE Fund description, it said they will donate money after receiving proposals from the charities, which makes me wonder whether some of the charities we saw may not get anything after all.
To see which charities are best at using donations (and use the majority of funds raised for real programs and not administrative expenses) go to http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm

It's miraculous how people will appear out of the blue to support Nego. It must be his charismatic personality...or something.
20% is a lot for administrative costs. I would be more impressed if all the celebs paid for their own limos, hotels and other perks. But still, $48 million will help a lot of kids in the short term. We need to pressure world leaders to find more permanent solutions to these problems.

|
Posted by: Vin-Rose on April 27, 2007 8:06AM EST
Like I said D...privy to corporate boardroom meetings and what they say. I know the real story and the real reasons. I was an Exec Asst for 17 years from LA to ATL. None of them are different. Same horse of a different color. And why the Girl Scout cookie comment? Well, when the CEO says he doesn't participate in solicitation when a file clerk stops by for me to ask the CEO if he wants to buy a box from her daughter? Point made. Aside...comparing Corporate America to racial stygmas is like trying to compare apples to oranges. Neither has anything to do with the other.
D..as a former teacher employed by the state, you wouldn't really have any idea of how things operate in Corporate America. You will find that more and more Americans share my opinions and distrust of Corporate America...and not just for Enrons. It goes well belyond that. Most workers are befuddled with the shenanigans and greed of the last 10 years across the board which is why we have the largest number of Entrepreneurs in history fleeing Corporate to open their own small businesses. CEO salaries are not tied to performance and their salaraies outrank those average workers below them by 437% percent. These facts were previously posted on CNN.com Money section for anyone who regularly reads it. I'm not peppering anything with my personal opinions. No such thing as a CEO who lays off workers for the sake of...they do it to increase stock profits and increase their year-end bonus. Yesterday the Dow jumped to 13000 as a result of Corporate America's greed. How much money is enough money at the expense of the working class? Even the crude oil companies are at record windfall profits. That is a very true reality of how I can make "rash" statements as you put it.

Vin...as a former teacher, employed by the state...no I wouldn't, but you've forgotten that I was also a clinical psychologist, employed by Corporate American for nearly 20 years....yes, I have an "in" to the board rooms as well. My father was, also, one of those EVIL executives....I can assure you that, according to his company policy, solicitation at the work place was forbidden but he bought cases of girl scout cookies at home. He and his fellow executives donated lavishly and PRIVATELY to charities on a regular basis. He also was on the Board of Directors at Lionel when it was trying to get through it's bankruptcy. He and his fellow executives spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out the best way to get the creditors paid while leaving a fair share of money to the company's employees. He and his fellow executives lamented the necessary firing of hundreds of people in order to save the jobs of thousands.
I have participanted in clinical studies of high powered executives who suffer from many, many stress-related illness because of decisions that have to be made for the benefit of the Whole rather than the individual
I think I may just have more experience in this area that you think I do.

Thanks RC. It just goes to show that just making the right impression while on the show can help you in so many ways. Vin-Rose's (7:19 am) description of the video sums it up. He is just simple and uses his voice to sell his songs.

Hey, what were they like anyway? They looked pretty good, are they real? Are they built for speed or comfort? What'd you do with them? Motorboat? You play the motorboat? [makes sputtering motorboat noise]
Jeremy Grey: You motorboatin son of a bitch! You old sailor you! Where is she? She still in the house?

Since our DJ is on vacation I thought I would throw a song out to everyone. Not old skool but since he was the topi of one of the blogs yesterday...Here is:
A Different World Bucky Covington
We were born to mothers who smoked and drank Our cribs were covered in lead based paint No child proof lids no seat belts in cars Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved Had three TV channels you got up to change No video games and no satellite All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside
Chorus It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world
School always started the same every day The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray Not every kid made the team when they tried We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right
It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world
Bridge No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose And every Sunday, all the stores were closed
It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world
It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world
It was a different world

Yeah Mitch. it's a little more country than I expected but so far my favorite song is A Different World although I'm not country's biggest fan. It comes across as 'traditional' or genuine to me. I never really liked Bucky's singing on AI but did like him for his down home personality...you could tell he was a nice guy.....now that he's improved his singing so much he should be very successful.
