3/29: Taylor off charts, Elliott No. 3
By: Rodney Ho | March 29, 2007, 1:16PM EST

A little more than months after debuting at No. 1, Taylor Hicks’ self-titled CD has fallen off the top 200, despite the fact he’s on tour. It is clearly the fastest falling “Idol” winner CD in history and is unlikely to sell 1 million copies unless a miracle happens. (Trying to get airplay on AC stations won’t do him any good. He needs an appearance on “Oprah” or get played on “Grey’s Anatomy” stat!) He sold 3,400 copies last week, less than Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway,” which has been out for two years plus and has moved 5.7 million copies.

Here’s more info, courtesy of USA Today’s Idol Chatter.

Elliott Yamin’s CD is supposedly independently released paradoxically from Sony’s “indie distribution arm,” whatever that means. He debuted at a solid No. 3 with 90K sold, ahead of No. 4 Daughtry (76K, 2.04 total), who will be here three times in the next three months. He will be doing a free concert for Star 94 listeners at the Tabernacle this Saturday, the Loft April 6 and Star’s Starfest June 2.

Carrie drops to no. 15 (38K, 5.12 million total). Kat McPhee’s single “Over It” is gaining momentum on the top 40 chart and as a result, her CD moved up a bit to 73 from 74 and sold 11K, up from 10K. Her sales total: 270K.

Kellie Pickler is down to 6,700 in sales and 131 in the chart. Total: 478K

Fantasia dropped to 139 with 6,200 sold and 330K total.

Ruben is up to 217K with 1,500 sold and Clay sold 800 and is up to 506K.

I feel bad for Taylor, he seems to be such a good hearted person. At this point, I dont think even Oprah can save him.

Oprah can save anyone...

Dear little tiny infant Jesus, with your little golden diapers and little tiny fist all balled up, please help Oprah save Taylor Hicks.

but Rodney, how many total has he (Taylor) sold? You left that part out...the last I heard it was around 800k...not too shabby where I come from. Also, I have heard Kat's new single "Over It" and I thought it was terrible...I'm Over It.

Mike S you did a wonderful job of explaining why the "vote for the worst" idea is not a good one as well as why it wouldnt work. But the above comment left me confused, befuddled and a tad shocked. What the heck was all that about?

Posted by: KPH on March 29, 2007 1:52PM EST
Taylors album has sold over 800000 copies not too shabby. Also his debut album is what he was told to produce by AI and Clive which at times can be a whole lot different than what the artist wants to do. I have his CD and think it is great with the exception of 2 songs even though I bet his next album that he cuts on his own will be somewhat of a different style of music that will appeal to a wider base of music fans. I think Taylor will be around a long time and will sell a lot of records as well as concert tickets.

Posted by: Jex on March 29, 2007 1:53PM EST
Taylor's not in it purely for the money and fame. He just loves to perform. He loves music. I'm sure he's okay with his position. In life and on the charts. He don't need no stinkin' Oprah.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 1:54PM EST
Mike...take a deep breath...count to 10....relax. Nobody said anything about Kat doing better than Taylor...she hasn't sold even nearly as much. I think Rodney was only trying to suggest that Kat has some momentum, where Taylor seems to be done (on the charts) I don't think I'd call moving up one space 'momentum' but it's better than not being there at all.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 1:54PM EST
Amen, Jexy...

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 1:55PM EST
Have ya'll heard her song? I don't know how it could possible "move up" the charts, I am surprised it's even on there. It sucks azz, imo.

Hey Angela, nice to meet you. Welcome to the Blawgpound

Mike needs some of my Vicodin.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:00PM EST
Jex, i am playing devils advocate now; Why did he enter AI if he is not in it for the fame? He was doing his thing before AI.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:01PM EST
me too house.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:01PM EST
being passionate about something isn't a bad thing--you go Mike. I liked your Baby Jesus post, House--cute!

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 2:02PM EST
Rodney, to add a little. I mentioned this on the other blog. Carrie Underwood has been on the charts for 71 weeks and has moved back into to # 1.

Also, Chris Daughtry played a free concert in Greensboro, NC as part of the Women's NCAA Tourney and estimates were that there would be in excess of 20K people in attendance in addition to those there for the Tourney's.

Posted by: Jex on March 29, 2007 2:03PM EST
So he could do MORE of his thing, Shaun. Duh.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:04PM EST
so he IS in it for the fame.

Posted by: House on March 29, 2007 2:04PM EST
no im just messing with Mike, I knew once i saw this blog that Mike would be outraged....and well he should be, numbers dont lie....Taylors album sales s[peak for themselves...

Hey Kimmy...Jumbalya!

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:06PM EST
what up mr. spongeworthy....

Posted by: House on March 29, 2007 2:07PM EST
why do you do the high 5....its so "grease monkey"

Youre "grease monkey"

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:08PM EST
NO Shaun, it's so you can do what you love for a living and playing in local bars making $50 a night doesn't pay the bills. There is a difference between wanting to do that and wanting the fame---look at train wreck Britney Spears.

The defense rests....

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:10PM EST
Kimmy, so he is in it for the money?

Posted by: Jex on March 29, 2007 2:10PM EST
Shaun, don't make me come over there. . .I swear!

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:10PM EST
I don't like that term...

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:12PM EST
dang Jex, you getting all violent and stuff. I am just sparking a friendly debate. (shaun ducks because Jex is taking off her shoes, and Mike S is about to let me have it too)

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 2:15PM EST
Have ya'll seen the line up of free concerts in Atlanta this wekend for the Final Four?

Posted by: Jex on March 29, 2007 2:16PM EST
Shaun, let’s say you actually liked having sex with women. You would do it if no one paid you, but certainly you’d do it more if someone paid you. Even if it wasn’t a lot of money.

(Jex runs out of the room to avoid being knocked in the head with a basketball)

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 2:17PM EST

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:37PM EST
real big! trust me.......

Posted by: Harmony372 on March 29, 2007 3:17PM EST
Yea for Elliott! I'm very glad for his strong debut! Imagine what he would have done had TPTB actually signed and promoted him, like they did Pickler (of ALL people). Maybe this will show them to stop judging a book by its cover. He was hands down the best (male) VOICE in last year's competition, anyway (though Chris Daughtry was the better overall performer), the finals should have come down to Elliott/Chris.

Posted by: Rodney Ho on March 29, 2007 3:48PM EST
According to NIelsen SoundScan, Taylor has sold 661,000 copies so far. And Ryan Seacrest will be hosting part of Sunday's festivities at the MyCokeFest Final Four concerts at Centennial Olympic Park.

Posted by: Vin-Rose on March 29, 2007 3:57PM EST
Well people...here's something that makes you go hmmmm. If Taylor had 50million finale votes to win the whole shbang last year, why has he sold only 800K??? This is what I hate about IDOL. People dial their fingers off to get their favorite in and then don't buy the IDOL CD when it's put out. music. I was not a Taylor fan and still am not. He's too out-dated and laid back for MY taste but I understand others adore him. If he had SOOOO many fans, why aren't they supporting him and buying his CD? 800K sales is embarassing considering 50MIL votes!!

Posted by: Vin-Rose on March 29, 2007 3:59PM EST
I agree Harmony...I was totally into Elliott and Chris. Elliott should have won last year as it seems Chris D is doing fine all on his on.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 4:16PM EST
Hey Vin...how're you doing? We're over on the next blog. but to answer your question, Taylor may have had 50 million votes but that might have been only 800,000 people actually voting for him. The number of votes doesn't necessarily equate with the number of people voting.

Posted by: Negativo on March 29, 2007 4:20PM EST
Mike, I think the point Rodney made was that compared to other idol WINNERS he has been a complete flop in record sales, and having slipped so soon out of the top 200 while the other non-winners are outselling him shows just how poorly Taylor's result really was. After the initial idol boost wore off, "splat". Sorry, but I think Rodney has a good point.
