3/29: Chris didn't want to win(UPDATED)
By: Rodney Ho | March 29, 2007, 2:16PM EST

Here’s a small revelation Chris Sligh said during the media press conference: after his rendition of “Endless Love” was trashed a couple weeks ago, he considered dropping out. He asked the producers would he be able to stay on tour in the top 10 if he dropped out. They said no. So he stuck with it.

Ultimately, his heart wasn’t in it. He even said out right, he didn’t really want to win.

“I never came into this wanting to win it,” he told me. “I came from an indie alternative rock background. For me, I think winning ‘American Idol’ would have hurt what I was going for.” (Indeed, I think he’s taking cues from Chris Daughtry, who now readily says he’s glad he didn’t win in retrospect.) Tell me if I’m wrong but I think Chris is the first finalist to ever admit not wanting to win it.

He thought his take on the Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” wasn’t as bad as the judges said. “I really gave my best,” he said. “I admit it wasn’t a great performance this week but it wasn’t terrible.” He added, “That’s the competitive side of me that kicks in.”

And yes, he did win the $50 bet with Phil Stacey about getting voted off (and he did get his cash.) He said he didn’t know it was still live when he said that since Brandon and Stephanie’s farewell songs got cut off before it aired.

He also said he scaled back his mockery of the show after death threats popped up on his blog following his joke with Simon about Teletubbies and Il Divo. “I got scared,” he said.

He noted that he chose songs he liked or felt would challenge him and he wasn’t trying to appease the audience or the judges. “All six songs [he sang on the show] were risks one way or another. I felt like that was ignored [by the judges.]”

And he wished singers could use instruments and would allow original songs. He also wished he could blog during the show, which the producers wouldn’t allow.

He defended Sanjaya. “People underestimate Sanjaya… He has a good voice,” Chris said. “I think he gets a bum rap.”

And yes, I had to run off to interview Jerry Springer because he’s doing a speech tonight at Emory. And the man stays busy. He’s going to host “America’s Got Talent” and VH1 is doing a behind-the-scenes reality show on his talk show. (How meta!).

This could explain the big change in him the last few weeks.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 2:36PM EST
Wow...death threats???....The comment was ill-advised but hardly worthy of death threats.

Jerry Springer????????? That's a joke, right??????

Posted by: shay on March 29, 2007 2:39PM EST
Interview Jerry? WTF??

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:39PM EST
Dang, is this a blog marathon? 5 different blogs today.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:41PM EST
Jerry has a new tv show coming out, he was on Tom Joyner this morning. He must be doing alot of press today.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 2:42PM EST
Looking back, I think that teletubbies/il divo comment was the beginning of the end for Chris. Not that I think there was a conspiracy to get rid of him or anything, just that he seemed to lose his energy after that and he lost a large number of people who might have become fans.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 2:45PM EST
But why Deirdre, it was funny. It is called a joke. That is what he had been known for, I think the exact opposite happened, when he went back and tried to apologize, that turned his humor fans off. (am i saying that right) The hassoholf (sp) comment put him on the map, so he should have stayed with the witty humor all along.

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 2:46PM EST
Jerry Springer is hosting "America's Got Talent" this year since Regis had open heart surgery.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 2:50PM EST
No, Shaun...it was all over the boards the next day, before the apology. I thought he meant it as a joke but I also thought it was extremely rude. I mean, it would be like going up to your new boss on the first day of work and making a derogatory joke about his accomplishments. It might be funny but you'd be way out of line.

Posted by: shay on March 29, 2007 2:54PM EST
Chris didn't perform well. That's why he was booted.

Posted by: linnykat on March 29, 2007 2:57PM EST
D and i will never agree about this one, lol

I thought it was perfectly in line with (a) Chris' type of humor (which is basically irreverent) and (b) Simon's types of insults, and the fact that Simon has said in the past he actually likes it when people try to come back *at* him.

anywho, i think there WAS a backlash of people who thought he was out of line, and it did affect him and his performance. But he's top 10 so he at least will continue with SOME exposure. i felt bad for his wife, she was trying so hard NOT to cry!

anywho, back to the salt mines!

Haley next, if there's any God/dess (because we already KNOW Sanjaya won't go yet)

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 2:58PM EST
If he wanted to quit but didn't because he wanted to be on the tour, do you think he may have sung subpar to get booted?

I heard on the news this week his hometown was really not backing him like many other's hometown's have.

Posted by: Monica on March 29, 2007 3:00PM EST
Regis decided not to do season 2 of America's Got Talent because the travel was too much, not because of his heart surgery.

Posted by: Tman on March 29, 2007 3:04PM EST
When will Idol management acknowledge that Howard Stern and best of the worst.com are responsible for keeping Sanjaya on the show.? Question is there anything they can do to stop this from happening. This is picking up momentum and Sanjay may stay on and win which will ruin this show.

Posted by: on March 29, 2007 3:11PM EST
Tman, I dont think they ever will.

Posted by: shay on March 29, 2007 3:13PM EST
Tman, AI would never admit that. That would be admitting defeat from the highest rated reality show.

Posted by: Wizard on March 29, 2007 3:13PM EST
I have heard that Simon has said if Sanjay wins he will quit. He should take part of the responsibility for putting him in the top 24. Maybe they should rethink the format and let the judges get it down to 10 before letting the fans vote.

Posted by: Mike S on March 29, 2007 3:14PM EST
What we are discussing and the comments Chris made all point to something that happens to all types of people --- Basically CHRIS CAVED under the pressure. He truly looked totally beaten this week, and his comment about the lack of sleep and how easy it was to get sick while talking to Ryan cinched that to me.

The daily grind and pace just became too much for him, and he could not handle the pressure. Bottom Line.

Chris is extremely talented, and has put out some fantastic music with his band. They have an INDY CD for sale that is all music Chris wrote and it is fantastic.

I just think he did not expect the schedule they had to keep, and he did not enjoy the EXTRA stuff that the contestants had to do and put up with. Unfortunately for Chris he has shown that he does not have a thick skin, and as a result as good a musician and song writer as he is, he will probably always be an independent label club performer.

And I think he will be perfectly happy with that.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 3:17PM EST
linny...there's a BIG difference between 'coming back at' someone and making a derogatory joke about that person's work...especially if you're just starting at your new 'job'. Whether Simon was upset or not is really irrelevant...his fans were.

Mitch, I think that's a good question. Did he take a fall deliberately? I would hope not. The guy has a good voice....I think the fans reaction to his joking with Simon just took the wind out of his sails.

Posted by: PeachyKeen on March 29, 2007 3:18PM EST
If Sanjaya wins....ugh. My stomach churns at the thought. Chris wasn't going to win but it still sucked to see him go before a talentless hack like Sanjaya. The kid might have an okay voice but he doesn't have what it takes to be a star, I'm sorry!

I'm glad Chris will be on the tour, and although I probably won't go see him, I'm glad he'll get to be a part of that experience. I just wish I could have heard him sing Tony Bennett, I think it would have been nice.

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 3:18PM EST
This season has become something of a mockery. I love AI, but this season is like watching someone blow up a balloon then letting go and watching it go "phhttttt" all over the room until it is completely out of air. I hope Rockstar is back on this summer to redeem the music shows...

Posted by: shay on March 29, 2007 3:18PM EST
Chris has the potential to kick off a good career as did Chris from last season. He has an amazing voice and AI has given him the recognition he needed to do well in the industry. He will be just fine. An even though I wasn't a fan of his, he could definitely sing his chubby little but off, that's for sure! In fact, he is one of the best male vocalist we have had in all 6 seasons.

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 3:20PM EST
Mike S, where can you find the CD by Chris?

Posted by: RK on March 29, 2007 3:21PM EST
Regis lies -- he can't get enough of himself on TV. He's a TV ho.

This explains a lot -- Chris acted like he was homesick. However, I think the judges helped get him voted off -- they were as unfairly harsh to him as they were unfairly non-critical of their darling Jordin.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 3:22PM EST
remember mike...the backdoor boys were huge back in the early 90's!

http://www.halfpastforever.com/home.html

You can listen to the album there.

Posted by: Rodney Ho on March 29, 2007 3:23PM EST
Chris in his heart admitted he didn't want to win it and I think that came across on camera. If he isn't giving his all, why should we care enough to vote for him? And yes, I think Chris is an indie rock guy at heart.

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 3:23PM EST
Cool, thanks!

Posted by: Rodney Ho on March 29, 2007 3:25PM EST
I just updated the blog entry and it ported over reasonably fast!

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 3:28PM EST
Chris didn't want to win it all!!!.LOL!..HE HAD NO SHOT!

Posted by: Mike S on March 29, 2007 3:32PM EST
Hmm JUst found out something I didn't know - Chris has actually won a couple of national Songwriting awards already.

BTW I do reccomend giving Half Past Forever a listen if you like Alternative Rock. I actually got a pretty strong Daughtry vibe from the music.

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 3:33PM EST
chris can do what ace does and just write or co-write the music. you can do just as well with that and not have to put up with all the extras stuff.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 3:34PM EST
Email that to me mike s..thanks!

Posted by: Mike S on March 29, 2007 3:36PM EST
Wow Half Past Forever is up to #29 on Amazon's sales list for last week. I am pretty sure they will go higher this week.

Chris may actually become a hit artist before this season is even over.

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 3:37PM EST
Perhaps if Chris had just put his hair into a Fauxhawk, he might have been able to hang on another week or two...oh, what might have been...sigh.

Posted by: Mike S on March 29, 2007 3:39PM EST
LOL IOE.

I think Chris accomplished what he had hoped to do on the show. I think his entire goal was no gain enough recognition to give his band/song writing career a kick start.

It may end up being short-lived, but for now that is exactly what is happening.

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 3:46PM EST
I think you hit the nail on the head Mike. I really liked Chris a lot, but I really became disappointed in him for two reasons...

1 - I was astounded by his arrangement of "Endless Love", an absolutely shameless ripoff of Coldplay's "Clocks".

2 - He gave up. Regardless of the reason, I can't tolerate anyone who gives up. I have been an athlete and a musician my entire life (which has been longer than I wish to admit, but to give you an idea, me and Andy Griffith could reminisce about the ol' fishin' hole), and giving up is NOT an option...EVER.

I hope he does well, but I did lose some respect for him over the past couple of weeks.

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 3:47PM EST
Actually it's in your best interest to not win AI and just use it for th exposure. Freedom...Freedom...Freedom.

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 3:47PM EST
He seemed to think it was important to go on the tour this summer....I wonder if he's planning to have his band follow and do after show gigs with them like Taylor did.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 3:50PM EST
YO Mike...still waiting on that info.

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 3:51PM EST
yeah,

i am not sure if we are hearing the whole story from Chris right now. you want to win you dont wnat to win. you want out, you dont want out. you want out but you want to tour. why want to tour? he will have to sing those same cheezy songs. I am not a fan and dont really see him being big like Daughtry. Love the Daughtry, hat the Sligh. dont really hate, just bored by the Sligh.

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 3:53PM EST
Diane...I was thinking the same thing...why would anyone...lol...want to go on the tour? especially the older ones and sing all those awful songs...group songs..

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 3:54PM EST
America (or should I say voteforthe worst.com & Howard Stern followers) is creating a monster!! Here is an article from TMZ.com:

TMZ spoke with a source close to Sanjaya's family. The source had a message for the media: Bring it!

Our source says that the family was at first worried that all the bad press was going to hurt Sanjy's chances on the show, but now say, "You can write all you want, Sanjaya is here to stay!" World press, rejoice!

And to the "jerks" at votefortheworst.com, our source added, "Thanks guys, but he doesn't need your votes." You sure about that?

Posted by: Apezee on March 29, 2007 3:54PM EST
I miss Stephanie, she really wanted to go on tour. Why be on Idol if you don't want to win?

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 3:55PM EST
i've always wanted to meet someone that actually went to one of those concerets!and just ask them what the hell were you thinking!

Posted by: Harmony372 on March 29, 2007 3:56PM EST
This explains a lot....and I was actually thinking along this line of reasoning last night before he got kicked off. Chris is a professional.....he's like the music director at his church and everything (from what I've read) so being "off-tempo" from the song just didn't make sense. I figured he intentionally threw it. And I figured it was for a reason like the ripping he got for trying to do his own thing with Endless Love. It's funny....the judges like to say "you made that your own" because a contestant throws in an extra riff or run....but if they DARE to TRULY make the song their own, and not karaoke....they get ripped apart by the judges. Best of luck to him....I always thought he was "playing the game" well. Kinda like mixing a "Survivor" mentality into AI....right down to using "Fro Patrol". I guess in the end, he got what he wanted out of it. On the tour, he'll have much more flexibility to sing/rearrange songs as he sees fit. Sign of a true artist....and not the moldable crap AI wants to package and sell.

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 3:59PM EST
His church and his hometown were angry with him and giving him a hard time for his choices in music and songs ... saying he had deserted the christian music and that were afraid for his soul....things like that..May have played a part in him not being so excited about AI.

Posted by: linnykat on March 29, 2007 4:00PM EST
With AI, i get the feeling that there are a LOT of things we never know, but only hear smidgens of -- just enough to whet our appetites and then let us down -- about judges, contestants, and audiences. Other than blogging with you guys, i figure the SANEST way to watch AI is to turn it on on Tuesday, listen, figure out what/who you like, vote if you want to, turn it off; turn it on Wednesday, see the results, bitch a little, and turn it off.

I think that's one reason we have so much fun in this blog -- everyone here is not so obsessed with AI that it is all we talk about -- during the interim, we have fun with a LOT of other stuff!

IOE, it is ALWAYS good to hear your input. And i think the only way you coulda been talkin' with Mr. Griffith 'bout the ol' fishin' hole is if you were about the age of Opie (as compared to Andy) ~¿@

D, as i said, you just have to agree to disagree about the comments thing, but that's history and i value your input way too much to let something like that affect me...hope you feel the same!

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 4:03PM EST
Harmony what makes you think he will do his own thing on tour? we are talking about the Idol tour after the show ends, not his own tour with his band. Is Chris D. the first non winner to get so much press after he left the show? He was on just as much stuff as Taylor in some respects. But no one beats Fantasia for appearances. She was everyhwere after she won. Diana did some things but not as much i think.

so back to my question... was Chris D the first non winner to get as much press and airtime as a winner?

And Chris S was not off the beat on purpose to lose, he didnt know how to be on the beat. You could tell by how he walks. the beat or rhythm eludes him.

Posted by: Harmony372 on March 29, 2007 4:04PM EST
D, need any vaseline???

Posted by: linnykat on March 29, 2007 4:07PM EST
hmph.... gimme that vasoline, shay!

N*O*T

yeah, Deirdre, I know.... i was trying to be funny.... *laughing* it's a LOT harder to be funny on paper than verbally! somehow tone/inflection/expression lose something in the translation, lol!!!

Posted by: linnykat on March 29, 2007 4:08PM EST
lol Harmony! good timing!

Posted by: Deirdre on March 29, 2007 4:08PM EST
Diane, Clay Aiken was BIG TIME after idol ended...I think we saw more of him than we did Ruben.

Harmony...thanks for the vaseline offer......I'd rather try to drink linny under the table...much more fun, less bruising and neither one of us would remember what we were fighting about!!

Angela, he went to Bob Jones University. I'm not sure how much ya'll no about this school but it is as conservative as it gets. It was just a few years ago that the school integrated. You are only allowed to leave campus so many times a year.

When you "date", you go to the dating parlor with plenty of chaparones (sp) and they have the "S" chairs so the men and women have to keep their hands to themselves. When I visited there a few years back, men could not wear jeans and women could not wear slacks of any kind.

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 4:14PM EST
oh yeah, clay did get alot of press, but i figured that was because AI really wanted him to win. So it was Clay and Chris D. Diana didnt get oodles and what about bo. I know 5th place person has gotten much press. Keeping in mind i think John stevens was 5th in his year.

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 4:14PM EST
Wow Mitch...I didn't realize there was anywhere left like that...No wonder they are so upset with him.

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:14PM EST
Yes. Being raised is an Independent Baptist Church I went there to check it out to see if it is where I wanted to go. It was too strict for me. Now that was 20 years ago but the Independent Baptists do not relax their beliefs much so I am sure not too much of that has changed.

The doors to the dorm rooms did not even have locks on them.

Posted by: Diane1 on March 29, 2007 4:16PM EST
oops i meant i know no 5th place person has ever gotten in real press after the show.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:16PM EST
well now in 2007..there allowed to date..LOL!!!!

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 4:17PM EST
Dang Mitch!! I just had a terrible flash back...I had an aunt who back in da day, would not allow women in her house in pants or slacks...so needless to say as I got older she ain't see me. She was strict baptist...or as they called it santified...

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 4:18PM EST
That should have been SANCTIFIED!!!

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:29PM EST
why would I want to? there is nuttin about NASCAR's Charlotte office, I mean Hendrick's I need to see.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:31PM EST
TOO SEE THE FOUR FAGSMEN THAT DOMINATE THE SPORT!

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:32PM EST
The four fagsmen that NASCAR does everything in their power to make sure they win?

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:33PM EST
Mitch....i hope they keep doing it...who's going win the national championship?

Posted by: MsAngela on March 29, 2007 4:34PM EST
Are they really called FAGSMEN? I don't do NASCAR so I really don't know...but somehow I don't think so...lol

Posted by: Negativo on March 29, 2007 4:34PM EST
Know who says they didn't want to win anyway? THE LOSER! Ever hear the winner lement victory and long for defeat? What a loser, and I'm glad Mr. Alternative has gone bye-bye.

Funny, but why exactly would a person try out voluntarily for something he didn't want to get? Why would he want to do the idol tour if he thought idol was bad for his "ahem" career?

Oh, I know...he has "street cred" in "indi world", right? Puh-lease.

And is Daughtry wants to play the "I didn't want to win" game, well, he's made sulking and bitching about not winning his full time persona, so I'm sure we can believe him when he tells us how great losing was. I especially noticed that sour milk curdled face he had on the show when he was voted off. That's the look of a dude glad to lose, right?

Oh, and John MaCanroe wanted to lose, also.

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:36PM EST
With NASCAR doing everything to help them of course Hendricks will. If they had to do it on their own they wouldn't be there. I know NASCAR is crying about Saturday's Bush Race because Carl Edwards passed Kyle Bush to win after they let Kyle make his pitstop after everybody else and then put him back in the lead. They said it was their fault.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:38PM EST
MITCH....calm down..i hated the cowboys in the 90's.national championship?

Posted by: IdolOverEasy on March 29, 2007 4:39PM EST
Funny, that's what Rex Grossman probably was really saying after the Super Bowl, "yeah, I didn't really want to win, I was really hoping good old Peyton would get that ring, he deserved it more than me, it was just an honor to get to be on the same field as him"....yeah right.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:41PM EST
200 WINS????..when did you start watching the sport?this team has been on the verge of taking the sport over, now it's happening.i would stick to the idol tour this year if i were you, cause it will get way worse for you on the nextel side!

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:41PM EST
I'm calm. Just telling you why I don't like Hendrick. I used to be a big fan when he started years ago with Geoff Bodine & Terry Labonte. I was even a Jeff Gordon for awhile.

Posted by: flat screen on March 29, 2007 4:43PM EST
you should still be...the team has worked hard for this!

Posted by: Vin-Rose on March 29, 2007 4:43PM EST
Hi Deirdre!!! Got your post on the other thread. Your explanation of 800K sales from 50mil finale votes makes sense but I find it hard to believe 800K people voted THAT many times. I suppose it's possible but still makes me wonder.

What is really pathetic is Chris Sligh not really wanting to win. People have dreams and someone with REAL hopes and ambition was cut to make room for Chris. It may be time for the producers to consider changing the rules. This show is about discovering untapped talent and those who are currently in bands or act as back-up singers aren't exactly "untapped". I thought this show was about RAW talent. Chris Sligh abused his position if he was only using the show to get publicity over his band.

Posted by: Mitch on March 29, 2007 4:45PM EST
You mean NASCAR has worked hard to put them there.

Hey Diane1234....in answer to your question about Chris Daughtry's press and airtime, I believe Kelly Clarkson is still the AI reigning winner of all. But of course that only really happened after she was released from the IDOL produders and she recorded her SECOND album sans IDOL. Daughtry is making number one's WITH his first album WITH his own producers. Not too shabby considering he was almost in the bottom 50% percentile last year (7th person to be voted off). Daughtry gets alot of airplay both on radio and music video stations.

Negativo...your last post cracked me up!! LOL!!! But you are way correct! When Daughtry was voted off last year he looked like he wanted to hit someone!!!

Guys calm down! Remember.... take whatever you hear about AI with a HUGE grain of salt. I honestly don't think that Chris went INTO this thinking "i don't want to win it" ... i think once he got into the grind of 7 long days a week, he burned out. There was a noticeable change in his attitude a couple of weeks ago, and his answer to the question about spending spare time... really showed his fatigue. Don't dis the man without knowing the whole story... it's easy to try to face-save by saying aahhh it wasn't so important to me - after the fact, and kind of sad, when everyone knows you're just trying to face-save and all... and the college thing, it's no lie that they're totally rigid about *worldly stuff*

i'd be willing to bet there's a lot more behind the story than we'll ever know.

Vinnie! can you blame Chris D for being surprised - shocked - stunned - disappointed? I mean, look who knocked him off the show!

Still wearing those space suits! I finally started work again...waiting tables for a famous chain. I vowed to NEVER work in an office again and I stay true to my word. And I am totally loving it!!
