It’s no surprise but Jennifer Hudson nabbed the Oscar for best supporting actress for “Dreamgirls.” Of course, she’s the first “American Idol” finalist to win an Oscar. Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini were robbed after that classic “From Justin to Kelly” in 2003!
“I have to take this moment in,” she said tearfully on stage. “I cannot believe this. Look what God can do! I didn’t think I’d win.” She credited her grandma as her biggest inspiration. She then thanked her mom, her boyfriend, her brothers and sisters, the “Dreamgirls” director, the cast and the Academy and God again. As the music started to cut her off, she added, “I thank you all for keeping the faith even when I didn’t believe.” And she then thanked Jennifer Holliday, too!

I truly hope Simon can get his knee out of his throat for the next show. His opinion of Jennifer Hudson was not respectful of her talents. His comments after her last American Idol performance demonstrates he wouldn't know talent if it was kicking him in his a--. He may be successful in his career but if he was an American Idol talent he would receive a negative 30. He missed his chance to support a multiple award winner in Jennifer Hudson. I hope Jennifer is really proud of her accomplishments as I am.
Because of Simon's cynacism, I don't watch AI. He is too negative and close minded taking away from the talent that appears on the AI show. Simon, hope your toes, ankles, knees and thighs taste good. You should be totally embarassed about your disqualification of Jennifer Hudson. She proved you to be the ass that you are on AI.
You have no ability to judge true talent. Your s--t colored glasses don't allow you to see true talent. American media has proved how cynical you truly are. Wake the flock up Simon. You wouldn't know a good BJ if it won the American BJ award.
Jen-Hud is the girl! I cried when she won last night. She truly deserved it for all her hard work in Dreamgirls. Is she the first African American to win an Academy Award in their first onscreen movie? Wow!! Now that's an accomplishment. I wish her nothing but the best in years to come. This has truly opened up alot of doors for her.
Does the link from accessatlanta.com -- http://www.myajc.com/post/idolblog/226_hudson_wins_oscar.html -- not work for anyone else, either? The link through the blog index (http://www.myajc.com/post/idolblog/225_hudson_wins_oscar.html#comments) worked, though. Looks like the "226" is wrong. This wouldn't be the first time...

RK...I'm not sure what kind of problem you're having. We have discovered it is easiest to get to the blog by putting myajc.com in favorites then just get to the blog from the link on that page. That way also signs you in automatically. sometimes it's easier to do it that way than trying to go to a specific blog.

BTW, good morning everyone and congrats to Jennifer.
Good morning Dee and Eve. I have tons of work so I probably will drop in sporadically today. Have fun!!

Saw an interview with Jennifer Holliday last night. Boy is she bitter! She couldn't even give Jen Hud props. Glad Jen Hud won and I hope it does open doors, but the Oscar has been a curse for a lot of new actresses.

I hate to say it but Jen Hudson could be a one trick pony. I hope her singing career continues but I don't have high hopes for her acting career...sad as that is. And I've heard that Jen Holliday is bitter.....Dreamgirls was on Broadway nearly 20 years ago...doesn't she acknowledge that, while she can still play the role on stage, the camera might not be so kind to her? She's not exactly young enough anymore to play the part.
Posted by: linnykat on February 26, 2007 9:52AM EST
D...i think Jen can probably maintain an acting career better than 'tasia -- NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE -- but i just see Ms. B being limited in her scope because of her tendency to go high-intensity vocally....whereas Ms. H seems to be able to control not only her voice but her body better... and until Ms. B can learn to dress and walk like a lady, she'll be limited in scope of roles, IMHO of course
I'm so happy for J Hud. Her speech was very gracious and real. I feel sorry for Jennifer Holliday. There's no reason for her to be bitter. She did an awesome job playing Effie in the Broadway musical. That song will forever be legendary because of her. I can't understand why she just can't except that and move on.
It was a great day Greg. I was hoping we could catch the 17, but 2nd was good considering how loose he was.
I don't know linny. I didn't thing J Hud's acting was very good. She may very well have a better acting career than Fantasia, but I don't see her getting any big roles now. She still needs to work on her acting. She won the oscar based soley on her singing.

I am so proud of Jennifer Hudson. She is fabulous!!
But IMHO she should have beaten Fantasia.
Fantasia has no class. She looks a hot mess. Just ghetto (not in a good way). I hate the way she represents. It's not tasteful. Yes, I AM A BLACK WOMAN.
I also think that both Jennifer Holliday and Jennifer Hudson are GREAT singers. I love them both.
Posted by: linnykat on February 26, 2007 10:31AM EST
Carla, oh i definitely agree -- acting is NOT her strong point...my point was that 'tasia isn't an actress EITHER, and frankly, I don't think she SINGS as well.
I'd rather see Jen singing than acting any day! But i wouldn't pay a quarter to see Fantasia walk around in too-tight dresses with her legs spread tight against the skirt, walking up and down stairs and leaing over and shoving a mic to her tonsils and screaming at the top of her lungs... and that to me is UNFORTUNATELY what she appears to think is her best talent. I was SOOOO very for her when she sang summertime, because it showed talent and versatility and skill....but then nothing else she's apparently done SINCE then has been musical, it's been mostly screaming i've seen. Now i have to admit i WAS pleasantly surprised on AI thursday, because she didn't spend the entire performance screaming, but her attire was totally inappropriate and i'm NOT a prude! I didn't particularly LIKE her performance thursday, but i didn't HATE it either, which is a major improvement from the last few times i've seen her on anything...
just my comments, for what they are (or are not) worth, lol
I don't think that Jennifer Hudson did that well in the movie to receive and Oscar, but I am proud that she did. He singing was out of this world in that movie. I just hope the Oscar opens up other doors for her because without it, I think her acting career would have been over. Now she can at least get some smaller roles that don't involve singing and make some extra money. I like Fantasia but I am a little concerned a bout her on broadway. The role she is playing involves alot of lines (so I heard from my sister who just saw the it) and her speech to me is not the clearest. She will nail the singing part, but the acting and speech parts bother me.
Posted by: Ms.T on February 26, 2007 11:01AM EST
Ummmm Just cut to the chase.
Fantasia is not an actor in any way. She sounds like she's out of breath when she talks. It is not cute. Shee looks terrible. She needs to hire a stylist, makeup artist and hairdresser that will tell her the truth.
If she cuts down with the 98% SCREAMING and the 2% singing she would be alright. How about if she reverses the number of the screaming and the singing. LOL
Posted by: Deirdre on February 26, 2007 11:02AM EST
I think anyone could sing that song and do well. What Jennifer did was act the song....it wasn't how good her voice was that gave her the oscar...it was the raw emotion that flooded out of her when she sang that song....you can say she wasn't a good actress but that wouldn't be true. What she conveyed in that one scene was all the pain, frustration, anger and sorrow Effie felt because of what had happened to her. Not many people can let that much emotion flow out of them.....we tend to hold back. Jennifer Hudson didn't hold anything back. We saw it all.
Posted by: linnykat on February 26, 2007 11:04AM EST
Good point D.. the question would be...was that from HER experience as well, thus translated well, or did she ACT it... and if she did act it, can she also act OTHER emotions equally well? if the answer is YES, she will go far; if not.... well she'll go far singing, no doubt!
Posted by: Deirdre on February 26, 2007 11:11AM EST
I'm not saying she's ever going to be a good actress...what I'm saying is that, in this particular movie, she earned the oscar. Whether she's drawing on personal experience, which most actors do, or not, she EARNED the oscar. Were there nominees who are consistantly better actors than Jennifer Hudson...of course! Will she ever be able to do that again in a different movie playing a different character...time will tell. But she earned this one for acting, not singing...that song is a master class in putting your emotions on the line and Jennifer got an A.
D, you are right on pointwith both comments. Jennifer definitely put her heart and soul into the role of Effie and I felt her pain an anger in her performance. She definitely earned the oscar. Whether she ever reaches this plateau again, only time will tell. From here on she can only get stronger as an actress because she doesn't have the pressure of proving herself. She has accomplished right out of the gate what some actresses who have been around twenty years or more have not. I wish Ms. Hudson much success and maybe now the media will cease with the Jenfest!
Shay, I thought her acting was better than her singing. Her singing didn't necessarily outshine the others who sang in the movie but she was always emotional when she did and that added the extra umph to her songs. Beyonce always had this bland, deadpan look when she sang AND acted. I bet if you watched it again you would see what D means, JMO.
I think Jennifer Hudson MISSED a prime opportunity to get a Major hug and autograph from Gorgeous George!!!!!!!!

She didn't sing the song, shay, she acted it. There's a huge difference between the way LaKisha did that song last week and Jennifer did it in the movie. LaKisha sang the song...very well! Jennifer used the song as an operatic piece(the way it's meant to be) The scene requires all the characters to argue through song...they don't speak the argument, they sing it, much like what would happen in an opera. Jennifer is still in the argument when she launches into her tirade(which is the song). Most of the music in the show is the Dreamgirls performing....this wasn't one of the girls performing, this was Effie reacting to being dumped by the group and the man she loves all in one fell swoop. Acting is reacting to a situation, whether you do it with dialogue or music...it's still acting.
I don't see Jennifer Hudson EVER being a great actress in the future but she was when she did that scene. When the audience in the theatre where I saw the movie stood up and applauded, they weren't applauding her singing voice...they were applauding the emotional impact of the scene.

Eve, I saw Dreamgirls twice. I thought Jen's singing was better than her acting and that neither her nor Beyonce were the best actresses in that movie. Noni ( I think that's her name) did way better than both of them to me.

Shay, I do agree that Anika Rose(?) was very good in the movie to not even receive honorable mention at any of the award shows. Eddie was very good as well but he screwed up his chances by releasing Norbit (that CRAP) before the awards were aired. I really think he would be holding Mr. Gold today if he hadn't done that movie.
Stck a fork in her - she's done. The sad truth is that there just aren't a lot of movie roles for an actress like her. Queen Latifa gets all the comedy roles. Maybe the WB will come up with a sitcom for Jennifer Hudson. She could play a fat sassy black woman with a fat sassy daughter. They could call it "Oh no You Di-in!" Wait - they already did that and called it The Parkers. So, yeah, she's done.
SP, WTF? Are you trying to say that the only roles black actresses (who are not slim) can get are as sassy black women? Again, WTF? That is so insulting. FYI Jennifer did not play a comedic actress and Queen Latifah is not limited to just comedy roles.
Eve07...dont get upset....I think S P was just trying to come on here and push buttons.

I think the point is that there just aren't a lot of big budget Hollywood movies featuring black actresses. And no, you can't count Eddie Murphy, Tyler Perry or Martin Lawrence. I mean besides X-Men what has Halle Berry done since she won an Oscar? Not much. Although I wish she would make BAPS II. I loved that movie!

I always respect your opinion, shay...I just don't agree with it sometimes! :) We're two opinionated people...so everyone else better just watch out!

opinionated? really? dayum, and i never even noticed! ~¿@
did anyone ever answer my question earlier, if so, i can't find it...boys or girls first this week? anyone know?
Posted by: Deirdre on February 26, 2007 1:31PM EST
You, too, linny...you've NEVER been shy about letting everyone know how you feel!
Posted by: Deirdre on February 26, 2007 1:34PM EST
To answer your question, linny...I have no idea but I think they'll go in the same order...I mean, wouldn't you want to get the boys over with before going on to the far superior females. A couple of the guys are good and here's hoping they stay in the contest but I don't know HOW America's gonna choose amongst the girl-talent!
No one knows what's in Jennifer's future just like Simon Cowell didn't know that he was dissing a future oscar winner. Jennifer may become very successful in music or movies. Or she could just have a steady low-key career staying busy with different projects. I don't think we should say that she won't make it as an actress. She's just starting out. I think that she could become a very well respected actress with the right coaching. Look how great actors Queen Latifah and Mark Wahlberg has become over the years. And they started as rappers.
Nobody knows what is in Jen's future, but I bet her phone is ringing off the hook today! Congrats to her!
She might go on to be a big movie actress, or she might decide to get married and have lots of babies to sing lullabys to. I hope she does whatever makes her happy, that is the measure of success.

If any of you have questions for Taylor Hicks, I'm talkin' to him Friday. I just posted a blog item about it. He's coming to the Tabernacle on March 9.
Excellent pont WandaC. She has to be careful not to get caught up in what others want for her. I hope is takes her time with this album and whatever else is in store. Beyonce has 8 or 9 Gammys but how many Oscars? Did you all notice Beyonce's dad was beside her last nigHt. I did not see Jay Z. I wonder if AI wants her on the show this eason and will she have time for them.
