1/25: Now you gotta cut loose...
By: Rodney Ho | January 25, 2007, 3:07PM EST

topher mccain.jpg (From Topher’s myspace page.)

Topher McCain, a 28-year-old Papa John’s employee from Kennesaw, is not one of those bitter “American Idol” contestants who felt he was humiliated on TV. No, the Paula Abdul fan enjoyed his appearance Tuesday during the Memphis auditions before 31 million viewers.

“I give kudos to ‘American Idol,’ ” he told me today. “They showed me as kind of punchy when I made those comments about my wife, but overall, they portrayed me as a generally classy nice guy gentleman.”

Indeed, he probably solidified his airtime by calling his wife the b-word, which was kindly bleeped out by “Idol” producers but made Simon and Co. laugh.

On camera during Tuesday’s episode, McCain said his wife cheated on him, then decided to leave him. (He said they are currently separated, not divorced.) If she wanted him back after he became the Idol, he wouldn’t take her because he has a support system that loves him and his singing.

McCain has not heard from his wife since the show aired. (I’m trying to track her down to get her side of the story.)

In retrospect, he said he probably shouldn’t have sung “Footloose,” a 1984 party tune by Kenny Loggins he used from the very beginning of the “Idol” auditions. “It had been my good luck song,” he said.

He had to go through three rounds before facing Randy, Paula and Simon. In fact, he had to go to Memphis twice: the first three rounds before show producers, then a month later to meet the three big judges.

The judges told him he sounded too karaoke. “I’m tempted to ask if you sang that the night before your wife left,” Simon said. Ouch.

He added that Topher sounded like a guy who was drunk at a wedding and was about to fall off a stage. McCain took the critique well, even joking afterwards that that was what he was going to do.

His second choice might have been more appropriate for the audition location: Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.”

“That’s a song I do in karaoke,” McCain said. “Also, when I do benefit concerts.” So does he do “Footloose” drunk? “I do that quite sober,” he said. “When I get drunk, I sing ‘God Bless the Broken Road.’ “

His 15 seconds of fame got him a gig at a teen club this Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Warehouse on Cobb Parkway. He’ll do 30 minutes of country and pop hits with backing tracks.

Joe Polo, who runs Ponier Music (the music store that the club is part of), said he was actually impressed with McCain and his cohones.

“I’ve seen way worse,” Polo said. “I was on his side. When I found out he was from Kennesaw, I wanted to have him show us what he can do. He chased his dream. He went for it. He went into the belly of the beast!” As a musician, in fact, he was “jealous” that McCain was able to get the opportunity to sing before millions.

Ok this opens up a question... Sarah said she came to NYC and skipped 2 days of classes... howEVAH.... if the initial tryouts were a month BEFORE the finals before the Big 3 (or in this case, 4), then what's the real story? Wish I knew for real how the NYC auditions were scheduled... for real the producers do NOT need to alienate their fans by lying about such things, it's not necessary! they already HAVE such a huge viewership.

any thoughts, gang?

what Rodney said about Topher is what prompted my last comment: "(He had to go through three rounds before facing Randy, Paula and Simon.) In fact, he had to go to Memphis twice: the first three rounds before show producers, then a month later to see the three big judges."

Linny, she didn't say that was her first time going to New York so just maybe she didn't feel the need to tell her folks until it was televised, of which the show probably said "Ryan" would call with her to soften the blow. In order words, she was able to hide it until it was televised.

Then again, maybe the little girl was just lying or the show edited the comments she mentioned about going to New York twice.

If I am not mistaken, Fantasia did not mention having to come to Atlanta twice in her book. From my understanding, she was here 3 days straight for all her auditions. Maybe they do them different depending on the city they are in. I don't know.

linny, it just backs up what we were all thinking - the whole story was just a load of malarkey. Someone thought she was cute but boring and decided to but an "edge" to her story.

It's probably true that her father doesn't want her to do the singing thing, but that's not unusual. Most parents want there children to go to college and "make something of themselves."

I think sometimes they can align Randy, Paula and Simon's schedules so contestants don't have to come back a second time. It depends on the city. That back story about Sarah and her dad did seem a little trumped up. If she makes the final 24, we'll learn more, for sure.

Posted by: AmyG on January 25, 2007 4:16PM EST
Linny, I agree that it seems pretty trumped up now. I hope that story doesn't end up biting her if people feel negatively towards her for lying to the audience.

Have you all read the traffic blog? Somebody was hating on us AI lovers on it. I'm glad I live 5 miles from work after reading about this am traffic. Have a good one everyone.

In my heart, I don't think she was lying. I think she was really scared that her father would cut her off. I have been like that with my parents. I remember my mom telling me once that if I dated a certain guy, she would put me out of the house and I really believed that. Well, I did it anyway and guess what, she supported that relationship 100% and I had been worried for nothing. She did it to scare me, but I guess she had no intentions of following through with putting me out.

The ian guy was really good..his mouth scared me..so i turned the channel!!!!

Posted by: AmyG on January 25, 2007 4:31PM EST
Carla, what's the traffic blog?

Posted by: linnykat on January 25, 2007 4:40PM EST
re: Sarah -- i still tend to believe her story in essence... with the producers making their own cuts for their own purposes...maybe to do exactly what we are doing...questioning it!!!! surely than cannot be so d'oh as to not realize it sounds a little strange in places, depending on the underlying facts!!!

re: traffic THANK GOD I DON'T HAVE TO DRIVE OVER THERE ANY MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HALLELUJAH!!

and people hate on AIers everywhere... as if there were something WRONG with taking a few hours a month out for just plain ol' relaxation and enjoyment... but i BET if you could watch THOSE folks for a few hours, they'd be playing video games, playing poker, riding dirt bikes/atv's, or whatever -- i've just gotten where when someone starts in on AI time spent, i just politely, in my good ol' southern "bless your heart" manner, what THEY do for relaxation and in their free time *grins*

the stupid ones get huffy, the smart ones realize...wait...what's so bad about that! i mean.... i know genius iq people and high end money makers who spend HOURS playing RPG video games either online or stand alone... or watch family guy and futurama faithfully... and i don't think they're so stupid because of it (i like family guy but futurama just drives me NUTS) lol

or how about the guy who comments about AIers then goes and spends tons of money gambling?

who's stupider (is that a word?)

*soft southern belle smile, batting the ol' eyelashes*

linny, backatcha!

Posted by: linnykat on January 25, 2007 4:53PM EST
(after "bless your heart" manner, above) insert the words "as them"...sorry

We're leaving out one possibility...perhaps Sarah's dad is in on this. A smart parent, who understands the need for back stories and is well aware of what a cute little actress his daughter is, might devise this kind of plan. Don't get me wrong about this. We all know Idol well enough to understand that back stories(especially dramatic ones) get a good singer a lot more attention. It helped get Sarah to Hollywood and more exposure on TV. We may never know, cuz if mom and dad are in on the ruse, they'll just continue to play it right up until daughter makes the finals, then relent, exclaiming how proud they are and how they didn't realize just how talented she was. I know all this sounds cynical and I may be completely nuts, but there was something about that whole business last night that just didn't ring true!

lol, and that's why i luv you D!!!!!

Amy, on the front page of ajc.com there is a blog about the traffice problems from this morning that the conventions downtown caused. I thought it was funny that two people mentioned this blog on there. Man it took me 20 minutes to get home.

Posted by: puggyhere on January 25, 2007 5:33PM EST
Well I thought it was bogus cuz I misunderstood her age ...I thought she was 16 not 19 which her being older it could be believable her being able to go from Ohio to NYC without her Dad knowing~~~

We'll see as it all plays out~~~ hafta admit though I am highly skeptical

I am also wondering if Porcelena has any siblings and what in the world are their names......[snickering into my paw ]

Posted by: WandaC on January 25, 2007 5:59PM EST
Ponds, Noxema and Neutrogena.

Morning all..
Anyway, I watched the New York auditions last night since I was watching both AI and Friday Night Lights Wednesday night. After watching it, I think that Opera Girl has a chance. Also, I hope she gets a decent makeover. The string long hair is not going to win her any fans. I do think she has a very versatile voice. If she makes it the final 24, I think she might be a dark horse in this competion.
Also, I must admit I have a favorite as well now. If they make it to 24, I will be quite pleased.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!!
