12/31: American Idol predictions for 2008
By: Rodney Ho | December 30, 2007, 7:56PM EST

I made a few timid predictions a year ago and actually got a couple sort of right. Let’s see how I do for 2008:

1- Let’s start easy. Last year, I made a rather prescient prediction about ratings finally falling after five amazing years of upward motion. Okay, so it was going to have to happen eventually so it wasn’t exactly a forehead-slapping prediction. In fact, the ratings opened big last year with 37 million viewers, the best ever. But the numbers flagged later in the season as ennui set in over the season six contestants. I think last year may cause millions to disappear from the get go, even with the writers strike. I bet the opener will be more like 30 million and I predict the show will drop at least 10 percent over a year ago and the younger viewers will flee even faster. That will still make “Idol” by far the biggest show in the land but will indicate some folks have gotten bored enough to move on as we enter season seven.

2- Although there won’t be as many celebrity “mentors” as last year, the producers will still nab a couple of big ones such as Mariah Carey, Steven Tyler and James Taylor.

3- Simon Cowell will become ill and miss an episode for the first time ever. Nigel comes in and covers for him.

4- One of the final 12 will be openly gay and “Idol” won’t hide that fact, which will generate some controversy though probably no more than Fantasia and the single mom bit a few years back.

5- Here’s another easy guess. This group of 12 will be much more interesting than last year’s. While I can’t see it being as cool as the best top 12 ever from season five, it will be comparable to season four.

6- The winner will be from the Midwest and will be a guy. (Hey, at least I have something like a 50/50 shot on that second prediction, eh?)

LOL Rodney....I'm with you on some of this, for sure... "salacious" or not *grin* ... ratings, i agree, will be down from previous years... it might be fun to see how Nigel would do on AI as opposed to SYTYCD... as to the "gay" element... i dunno, i am not sure that anyone really cares anymore... No. 5.... that's a gimme!!!

I'll be working monday, then off for a glorious faster-than-light trip to tampa to see my dad, so i'll probably be completely out of pocket till friday after that.... (i said it was a fast trip!!)

I'm sure I'll be on at least a little bit Monday, so...

i'll just say g'night for now and wait for the New Year Greetings tomorrow!!!

peace :-)

I say the writers strike and lessons learned from AI6 combine to make AI7 equal or beat 5 in the ratings.

Interesting prediction, Qwerty s. I'm not sure that I agree with you, especially in light of the Sanjaya debacle last year.

Good morning!

I see all your predictions coming true at some point, Rodney. Maybe not this year but eventually.

As for the guest stars...you're probably right on that, too. Idol's ego seems to depend on who's there rather than who's singing.

Mornin' folks

well i made it to work.... i'll be peeking in later!

happy last day of 2007, y'all!

Here are my predictions:

1. A male will win idol this year. My reasons are simply because we have had four female winners and only two males.

2. My second prediction is that the top two will both be male (Reuben v. Clay). Again, my reasons are because the women have dominated the top 12 spots in previous seasons.

3. A previous idol contestant will do big in the movie industry for 2008.

4. Another celebrity son/daughter will make the top 12.

5. The young voters will not be as interested in the show as previous years and we will see a huge difference in the voting pattern.

Wow shay, i like your predictions.... Are you a gypsy????? lol.
I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.

Posted by: shay on December 31, 2007 10:07AM EST
No, I am not a gypsy and thanks for the Xmas card :-)

Posted by: linnykat on December 31, 2007 10:09AM EST
Shaun, let's HOPE shay's a gypsy!!! I rather like the predictions except that I just can't say a male will win... i am praying and hoping against hope that whoever is truly the BEST will win; but then I always dream big, right?

Shay, my continued prayers and wishes for your sister's health, and your family's stamina and faith!

Thanks Linny!

I'm a little busy today but wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I'm looking forward to what this year has to bring, both good and bad.

I hope Idol finds a group of worthy contestants and that we all remember that we can prevent another Sanjaya by voting during the preliminary rounds.

I hope the blog survives the changes that the ajc will bring to it and, however frustrating they may be, we can manage to remain enthusiastic about chatting!

I hope we can manage to keep from 'cyber-killing' each other during the season, with our diverse opinions, our wordy pronouncements and our 'either/or' attitudes. I promise to do my best to respect each and every one of you no matter how much your opinions annoy me! :-) I trust y'all will do the same for me.

I hope this year brings a wonderful new American Idol who we can all appreciate no matter how much we wanted the other guy to win!

And I hope this is Idol's last season. It has run its course :-)

Shay,

6 - Paula gets laid the most.

Posted by: Deirdre on December 31, 2007 11:04AM EST
It may be, shay. I think I'll watch this season, then decide whether or not I want another one.

My favorite part of the blog season is during the final 12, when we all come on after the performance show or early the next day to list, in order, our opinions of the singers. It has forced me to give some singers a second chance and question what i saw in my favorites. I'm always surprised by the differing opinions and the early favorites.

Posted by: Deirdre on December 31, 2007 11:07AM EST
Lex...good prediction but I don't think you're giving Randy Jackson the credit he deserves!

Posted by: shay on December 31, 2007 11:24AM EST
Simon's contract ends in 2010 anyway.

Posted by: shay on December 31, 2007 11:26AM EST
I think?

Posted by: Justin on December 31, 2007 11:45AM EST
Hm, I don't know if I want a girl or guy to win this year... I know out of the 6 there are only 2 guys but usually the guys aren't all that interesting.. season 6 blake was really the only one that was something to watch.

Posted by: Justin on December 31, 2007 11:46AM EST
...out of the guys anyways

Any prediction as to if there will be another “Sanjaya"?

Posted by: Deirdre on December 31, 2007 8:05PM EST
JT!!!!!!! Hello!!!! Long time, no hear from! And we can only HOPE there's not another Sanjaya!

Posted by: Justin on December 31, 2007 9:57PM EST
There won't be another Sanjaya...I'm sure the judges were more careful in their choices this time and picked great people instead of the oh so good auditions like Sanjayjay had..

anyhow, Jordin Sparks & Blake Lewis are supposedly performing tonight on FOX I believe @ 11?!

Posted by: linnykat on January 1, 2008 11:00AM EST
And Carrie Underwood was on ABC with Seacrest and others

and Hok and Dominic and Sabra and Nick from SYTYCD were on Fox (Cat Deeley hosted on Fox)

all were .... ok.... they let the dancers have a few moments to do routines in between other stuff...

i was babysitting my niece's kids, and they wanted to see all the pop stars so we watched back and forth, LOL....

I like the mentors. Jennifer Lopez, Diana Ross, and Martina McBride were sweet.

Look at the rosters of these record labels to guess the next mentors, finale performers, and "Idol Gives Back" performers: RCA Records, J Records, Arista.

Didn't Dolly Parton already say she was asked to be a mentor?

I've been hoping for Carlos Santana.

The Sanjaya Question comes down to this... Did the "Vote for the Worst" pranksters get it out of their systems last year?

The choices are (a) they established that they could mess up the voting on AI, got their headlines, had their fun, and are now bored and moving on. After all, they claim they didn't like the show to start with.

Or (b), they're fired up by last season's success, and want to top it this year.

I'm betting on (a)...

Posted by: Deirdre on January 2, 2008 7:39AM EST
People who enjoy ruining other people's fun never get bored...we have a few perfect examples here on this blog. I'm betting on (b).

Posted by: wiseowl on January 2, 2008 10:14AM EST
Happy New Year to all of you in AI BlogLand. I am hoping for (a) above, but I have to agree with Deidre; Perfect example of voters having Power that's Out of Control....and using Sanjaya in the process.
