12/18: Clash of the Choirs show #1
By: Rodney Ho | December 17, 2007, 11:19PM EST

Go Patti LaBelle! And go Philly!

NBC has put together a music competition that’s family friendly and appropriate for the holiday season: the four-day “Clash of the Choirs” starting Monday night for $250,000 in charity. (The finale is Thursday.) They brought in five celebs to compile choirs from each hometown: top stars are R&B diva LaBelle and soul crooner Michael Bolton, followed by Nick Lachey (“98 Degrees,” Jessica Simpson’s hubby) and Kelly Rowland (Destiny’s Child) and mid-level country star Blake Shelton, who’s B level at best even in the country world with three no. 1 hits and 13 top 40 hits since 2001.

Each celeb held auditions in their hometowns and picked 20 people for a choir.

One observation: having the other celebs “judge” each other’s choir is pure silliness and a waste of time. Nobody was going to say anything bad about their competitors no matter how blah they were. Simon would just roll his eyes watching this spectacle.

For all of its good intentions, this show is probably going to bomb. Choirs are not the sexiest draw, especially for younger viewers. It just seems like too much of a stretch as producers try yet another permutation of “Idol.” If the choirs were amazing, I’d feel okay about this but outside of Patti’s team, the performances were too spotty and some of the song picks highly questionable. Natasha Bedingfield? Bon Jovi? Tom Cochrane? Huh?

Here are my more specific thoughts on the five choirs from best to worst.

Patti-Labelle-4.jpg

1- Team LaBelle from Philadelphia I have a bias toward Patti LaBelle (above) because I got to meet her earlier in March at a Wal-Mart and she was nothing short of a delight. Chatty and funny, she’s also a diabetic (like me and Elliott.) She’s imbues the show with humor and grace. I loved her reaction when auditioners sang “Lady Marmalade” over and over - and how she pushed for her singer, the not-so-obvious white guy with real chops and soul vs. a big Ruben-type who didn’t quite have the charisma. As for the choir’s “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands,” it was inspiring, dynamic and vocally superior to the competitors. This was a true team effort, just brilliant. You can see why the show producers placed them at the end.

2- Team Rowland from Houston Kelly offered a very faithful version of George Michael’s “Freedom,” which has a wonderful, uplifting chorus for a choir. She gave solos to the Asian dude and the black guy with a cowboy hat. They were both okay, not great. Overall, I liked it, didn’t love it. This was a serious distant second.

And the bottom three, well, it was close call. It’s hard to say which was the worst. None really impressed me.

3- Team Shelton from Oklahoma City Blake admitted he knew zip about putting a choir together and it showed. I loved how he picked the brains of a choral director, then cut him. Funny! He smartly picked a couple of military guys to virtually guarantee his choir will be back tomorrow. He ended up selecting a rather tired Tom Cochrane rock song “Life is a Highway.” The choreography was fun and there was decent chemistry. I wish the male vocals had more stage presence but the vocals were adequate.

4- Team Lachey from Cincinnati First of all, while “Unwritten” isn’t a half bad pop song, it’s still too poppy for a choir, even with the gospel elements amped up to 11. The two lead singers he opened with were relatively weak and lacking in stage presence. The choreography was incredibly cheesy. It was pretty darn tepid, even with a spirited ending.

5- Team Bolton from New Haven Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” for a choir??? Where was the beat boxing? :) The lead guy who opened wasn’t half bad but it wasn’t quite a team effort. I did enjoy seeing the 77-year-old grandma gal singing the chorus to a Bon Jovi song. This was definitely the worst song choice for a choir and they suffered as a result.

My prediction is Lachey’s group is a goner because he went first and Bolton has more appeal probably for the types of folks voting. Lachey’s crowd probably isn’t watching this show but Bolton’s certainly is.

Did we watch the same show? Patti's choir sang "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands", not “I’d Like To Teach the World to Sing". You're right about them being the best though.

Babaloo's right it was "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands". Also they were the best and I'm not just saying that because Patti's good, I'm saying that because they were the most choir like.

I don't know if Lachey's group deserves to stay but I would almost gurantee they will.

I live in Ohio and have read a couple times that the ratings for reality TV shows in the United States are the highest in Cincinnati.

Maybe not something to be proud of! But they love reality TV in Cincy and I'm sure Lachey's group will move on because of the support from Cincinnati viewers

I think they sang both....anyway Patti is the one. She made sure her people could sing...ALL OF THEM!
I also feel nick is gone... and the other chours were just ok.

Morning fellow bloggers!!!

I would have liked the choir show a lot better with more singing and less talking. Blake Shelton may not know anything about choirs but he knows what will get votes! Patti LaBelle's choir was, IMO, a bit over the top. I like to hear the melody a little more. This was more like an Idol show, where loud compensates for good.

The others...eh!!! I'll give it another chance but I was very disappointed.

I'll be spending the day in my kitchen baking pumpkin loaves...I give them to friends and neighbors for Christmas. When you next see me, I will be covered with flour...thank goodness you can't actually see me!

Have a good one gang! I'll probably pop in while the loaves are in the oven!

Good Morning.
It took me all of about 30 seconds to determine that this show was gonna stink. Except for the fact that money is being donated to a charity this is a total waste of television. IMO

Posted by: Chaos on December 18, 2007 9:12AM EST
I think the "I'd like to teach the world to sing" statement was a comment that, by comparison, Patti's group could teach everyone else a thing or two.

I agree that having the other choir directors comment is a waste of time. Instead, find professional choir directors and music directors and have them comment and score like on "Dancing with the Stars". That would have been more interesting... and fun to hear them rip apart all the groups... then praise Patti's group.

P.S. I was very disappointed in the Bolton team. I expected more from his team. He should have known better... poor song choice and even worse execution.

I'll pass but thanks anyway

I love LaBelle but i too felt her choir was just a LITTLE bit over the top.... i KNOW there are soloists in every choir, but .... when i listen to a CHOIR i want a LOT of the blended harmonies and vocalizations from the WHOLE choir... I thought Blake did pretty darn good for a country boy with NO choir experience, LOL... I too thought Bolton's was just a tad weak...

But frankly, to address the "no way this show will make it" comments, I don't think the show is INTENDED to be a continuing hit.... it's for the season, for charity, and for FAMILY fun and entertainment.... lots of families are together or wish they were at this time, choirs are a big part of the Christmas season thing... it makes sense and I'm enjoying the fun of it. None of these folks are going to get anything other than the helping the home-town thing out of it, except that SOME are likely to pick up some exposure they might not have gotten before.

DJ, thanks for linking to those performances, I'd like to watch them again.... although i DID DVR it so my hubby could watch when he got off work...

it's not so much the idea of a hit show, as it is a variation on the competition AI style (or NStar style, or DTWS style, or whatever style) for a good purpose (charities at christmas.... surPRISE! LOL)

I fixed the title for Team LaBelle's song. No clue why I had that Coke song on the brain!

Posted by: linnykat on December 18, 2007 9:50AM EST
Oh, and re FS..... lol.... i SAW that WE, but no, greg was nowhere near me, i was in a borrowed car driving south to pick up my son from college and driving back.... I'll get you for that one, LOLOL!!!

And given the time limitations of putting 20 different people together and trying to blend them, we probably should cut the choirs some slack. Alas, it's just a four-day investment of time for NBC at Christmas time. I presume at least one of the nights, the choirs will sing just Christmas songs. That probably will work better than Bon Jovi!

Posted by: Jordan on December 18, 2007 9:52AM EST
Ok, so the first thing I thought about when I saw this show last night was taking American Idol and making those people sing together. I come from a very choral background, having sung in nearly every type of choir there is... traditional concert choirs, show choirs, gospel, as well as musicals. I also conduct an all-male a cappella group. What's funny about this show, supposed to be based around the choir, is that pretty much 2/3 of the air time was spent taking an in-depth look into the celebrity musician's life. Let's focus on the people in the choir rather than it's "director." As a conductor or director of a choir, the cardinal sin is to distract from the music and the ensemble.... this is all the the show did, putting a spotlight just as big, if not bigger, on the celeb director (who by the way, showed quite frankly that they knew nothing about choirs.. all they knew was belting pop solo voice. Kelly, from Destiny's Child, wanted blend, blend, blend but only took crazy belting singers. Even Blake, the country guy, said he was clueless and told them they would learn music easier from the heart rather than the sheet of music in front of them. Hmmmmmm)
Also, I'd appreciate hearing something other than a loud pop song sung in unison or two parts by these choirs, or a gospel tune that nearly broke my ears. How about a ballad eh, maybe in something like 4 parts? A cappella even? Wow, that might have been too hard. Let's face it... true choirs can sing this kind of stuff. Finally, I mean let's not be ridiculous.. even American Idol features ballads, showcasing real vocal talents of its contestants. Every choir was pretty much the same... loud, loud, loud and showy. This show was pretty much a joke.. an excuse for a new musical reality show, yet not venturing far from American Idol. And the publicity for these celebs was over the top. I came away from this show knowing the names of maybe one or two people in the choir and really not identifying one difference between the talents of the groups. This is a simply a poor representation of choirs.

Jordan you make alot of good points about the show itself... but... Who are we to say what is or isn't artful? Art is nothing more than a form of self expression be it in poetry, choir, dancing or whatever... that means ALL forms of self expression, these ppl sing but choose to do it in a different way, just because its LOUD LOUD LOUD and SHOWY doesn't mean its not artful and expressive. If you saw that show and didn't think the ppl singing and dancing on that stage were expressive and put on a good performance then you have a skewed perception. The show was about performance not choirs. Entertainment is showed in many different forms not just one, and for you to say that they give choirs a bad name or poor representation shows you are sorely mistaken because you are restricting choirs to your perception and only yours. Backstreet Boys and N'sync; worst thing to happen to music right? But music wouldn't be the same today without them... music and choir performance is whatever you want it to be. And that is what makes it so wonderful.

p.s. i hated the show except Patti Labelle's... just thought i'd share. :D

Jordan, that is what draws the TV audience, if it were based soley on the choirs, the ratings would be low,, we need a familiar face to identify with to make us watch. Believe me, they know what they are doing. You being from that background would expect that, but a majority of watchers are not from a choir so we are appealled by the celebrity on the show... JMO.

Posted by: on December 18, 2007 10:06AM EST
Choirs are different everywhere you go. If you are in a majority black church, the choir is a bit louder and wilder that in a white church where they hold the hymn books close to their hearts and sing in a robe.

Posted by: Deirdre on December 18, 2007 10:45AM EST
I think the fact that this is a 4 day show...not intended for series(maybe) means that it was put together pretty fast and haphazardly. Different choirs should sound different. Last night seemed to be a contest about which choir can sing the loudest. But, I agree that the focus should be on the 'sound' of the blended voices, solos should be kept short, and the music should be important. I didn't see that last night. I will watch again and hope that everyone has calmed down just a bit. I KNOW they can pick better music.

Posted by: Deirdre on December 18, 2007 11:03AM EST
And I agree with Shaun...choirs are different. A church choirs' sound depends on the type of church, school choirs often mix classical with pop, private choirs sometimes focus on one type of music. I'm just saying, I'd prefer to hear the music over the screaming.

Morning y'all...I didn't watch, but may tonight. TV's gotten pretty dull these days....I've actually started reading. LOL. I'm reading John Grisham's The Innocent Man. Interesting so far. Does anyone have any good book suggestions?

I thought I was Idol-ed out, but with the writers' strike, I am definitely looking forward to it. BTW, if it's still going on, what's gonna happen for February sweeps?

Anyway. How's everyone's day? I'm looking forward to this evening and Shot at Love with Tila Tequila's finale. I'm not ashamed. Well, actually, a little. :)

Posted by: Rodney Ho on December 18, 2007 11:37AM EST
And I'm reading Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat." I also bought the latest Carl Hiaasen book for vacation reading. Also caught "I Am Legend" this past Friday, which was a great Will Smith vehicle, not so great movie. So reality TV isn't ENTIRELY my life. Just a big hunk of it. :)

The writer's strike will decimate February sweeps. Sweeps were meant to help the local markets for localized advertising. During months such February, May and November, Nielsen would send out paper diaries. But since major market such as Atlanta are now measured electronically year around locally, sweeps are less and less important in a global sense. You may have noticed broadcast networks aren't as engaged in "stunt" specials and such in those months. That's why.

Or you can watch Kelly Clarkson sing in Belgium in the previous post!

I just read that the writers have refused to help out with the upcoming award shows. does this mean that they'll just give out the awards and cut all the other crap? How would that be a problem? :-)

kellyfan, I'm currently reading the latest Greg Iles book. He writes mystery/thriller type books. I'm also a huge Stephen King fan and love Dean Koontz. If you've never read The World According to Garp by John Irving...I highly recommend it. Very strange but never boring!

Posted by: kellyfan on December 18, 2007 11:48AM EST
Hi Rodney, thanks for the update on sweep dynamics. It's a changing world. Especially when you can cheat and watch online. Is that ever even counted? (I've heard a bit about it due to the strike, but only in the revenue sense).

I've been meaning to see I Am Legend and will likely do so this weekend.

BTW, I saw the previous post. Thank you for sharing! :)

Posted by: kellyfan on December 18, 2007 11:53AM EST
LOL, Deidre. The only problem I see is another lame attempt at doing the Soulja Boy...other than that, maybe they can finally finish a show on time!

Thanks for the book/author recommendations, I'll give them a look. :)

James Patterson, Richard North Patterson, Sandra Brown (The Chill Factor is verrrrry good), getting the entire Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series (although when we might see the completion of the book he started before he died which was to be the series finale.... i dunno) ... I've been going back and reading a lot of books that were written within the last 20 years that i missed along the way ...

eh.... i hardly know who's writing NOW, because of that, LOL....so i guess when i'm 80 i'll be reading books written this year, the way things are going...

back to work!

Posted by: War Eagle on December 18, 2007 1:52PM EST
I can't remember when the last time was that I read a book. I use to read before bed but since I put a tv in the room I haven't read a thing. I use to read Dean Koontz. Maybe I need to take the tv out of the bed room.

Good Afternoon everyone!
I know this is totally off-topic, but this morning my husband and I found out that we are having another baby girl - YAY!!! We are so excited. Our other daughter will be 3 in February, and she has been saying for 5 months that she is going to get a baby sister.

Posted by: AmyG on December 18, 2007 2:28PM EST
I watched the choirs last night and I was also pretty disappointed by them, except for Blake's; Patti was a little bit too much and I expected a lot more from Michael Bolton.

In terms of books being read, if you like to read books that have you laughing out loud, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is awesome. Also, I read a lot of David Eddings and Raymond E. Feist.
