11/30: More on Jordin Sparks
By: Rodney Ho | November 30, 2007, 6:10AM EST

Hollywood week started in Pasadena so “Idol” is whittling the numbers as I write this.

In the meantime, I stopped by the Q100 Jordin Sparks meet and greet yesterday but wasn’t able to talk to her. I had come at the last second and the West Coast Jive label reps hadn’t “pre approved” me to talk to her. Her manager could technically have allowed me to talk to her since she is high enough on the totem pole, but she didn’t want to peeve the corporate communications folks who provide access for interviews. Politics, she said. Seriously, Jordin is hardly a loose cannon. What’s the big deal? The manager did try to reach the West Coast PR folks, but it was too early. In the end, I didn’t get ugly about it. “She’ll need me one day,” I told her, only half facetiously.

Jordin was pre-approved to talk to Q100’s Adam Bomb. Her take on how she put her CD together. The fact the CD sounds even half decent is a testament to the power of “Idol” to put together decent songs and Jordin’s abilities:

“I was kind of scared. They told me I had to record it by a specific time. I had the tour to do. We did 59 shows. And I was singing eight songs a night five nights a week. It was really insane. The days off when I was supposed to be recording and relaxing, I ahd to record on those days. My voice was gone sometimes. A lot of times, I was really raspy. I would still have to sing. I don’t know how it turned out the it did but it worked out. I think I recorded five songs over the summer. The tour ended Sept. 23. I had until the first of October ot finish the album. I went to New York, wrote and recorded a few songs and did some more in L.A. By October 1, we had 20 songs recorded. It was a lot on my voice, a lot on me being in the studio 24/7. But I’m really excited. I’m very proud of the album.”

Here’s a shot of her I took before I left:

jordin-sparks-q100.jpg

And sure, Jordin’s CD didn’t blow anybody away in the sales department last week but at least on the download side, “Tattoo” is doing well. It was No. 8 on that chart selling 77,000 and 372K total, according to Idol Chatter..

Ken Barnes notes other sales: Daughtry’s “Over You” is at No. 23, 34K weekly sales, 526K total; “Home” is at 56, 18K weekly sales, 1.14 million total download sales; “It’s Not Over” is at 148, sold 7,000 and 1.52 million total.

Carrie’s “So Small” is at 40, 23K weekly sales, 373K total; “Before He Cheats” is up to 1.93 million in sales.

Elliott’s “Wait For You” sold 6,500 or so and has sold 792K to date.

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 9:12AM EST
no flats, it was only on NFL television....i think i heard that anyway, i didn't see it listed anywhere...so with all re-runs of my fave shows last night, i read a WHOLE book...I highly recommend, by the way Dean Koontz' "The Good Guy" ... he's not my favorite author, but this book was gripping!

morning everyone!

Good Morning Everyone!

Rodney, sorry you weren't able to talk to Jordin, but that's a great picture. She sure is a beautiful young lady. I wish her much success.

Linny, I love Dean Koontz. I think after Stephen King, he's my next favorite author.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Question of the day.

I have to write and present a persuasive speech Tuesday on the topic of spanking children. This is for my speech class. I have to persuade my audience that parental spanking is a reasonable form of punishment and not abuse.

I'm not talking about a beat down. I'm refering to spanking on the bottom.

My personal opinion is to whoop that ass if need be.

I welcome everyone's opinion of this topic.
Thank You

WE.... I believe that spanking (as opposed to beating) is a legitimate and validated part of child-raising. A swift swat with an open hand on the "seat of intellect" when a child misbehaves is appropriate at the time of the misbehavior and when the misbehavior is bad enough to warrant an attention-getting punishment. IMHO, a spanking should NEVER be administered when time has passed after the misbehavior, because, like pets, children rarely connect the punishment hours later with the infraction. IE, if a child does something that would normally be a spankable offense but teacher or mommy or nanny doesn't do something about it until "daddy comes home" ... daddy needs to talk, explain, show, whatever, but spanking would be meaningless and would actually almost be a form of abuse (even mildly) because the child really CAN'T connect the bad deed with the smack. Additionally, I think that strong thought should be given to the intent of the bad deed.... i.e., was it a mistake or accident? then a spanking seems overly harsh... but a deliberate act resulting in the same "bad deed" would be a spankable offense. and the spanking should be swiftly, briefly administered, not some drawn out mental torture, lol. and the spanking should be only used, IMHO, occasionally... if it's the response to every infraction, it becomes relatively meaningless except as a form of torture!

of course there is the biblical admonition "spare the rod, spoil the child" (that is biblical, right?) ...

Jexica good to see you hon! Have you read The Good Guy yet? it's REALLLLLY goooood! I may have to go back and read some older Koontz to give him another chance, LOL!

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 9:46AM EST
WE, I'll add this... i was spanked, my sisters were spanked, my husband was spanked, and my kids were spanked, basically under the conditions i set out above, and all of us seem to have come through just fine and are all pretty darned good people!!! what was worse was the "go out to the privet and pick me a switch" offenses!!!!! ooowwwweeeee!!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 9:48AM EST
Good points Linny. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Anyone else?

Posted by: AmyG on November 30, 2007 9:56AM EST
I believe that spanking can be useful if done "correctly"...I have, on occasion, spanked my daughter, like when she ran out into the street or if there is something that is health threatening. I agree with Linny that if you spank too late or too often it loses its effectiveness. AND I honestly believe you should never discipline in anger.

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 9:57AM EST
You might appreciate this little story from hubby's speech class in college... it was "persuasive speech" week.... hubby is the type who does NOT like to "persuade" other people regarding ideas, etc. and tried everything under the sun to get out of giving this one... no dice. So he gave a speech to "persuade the class that it was not his place to persuade anyone to change their mind about something". Not sure what the teacher thought of it, tho, I don't remember what grade he got, LOL!

Posted by: Jex on November 30, 2007 9:59AM EST
WE, I’m a spanking advocate. I whole-heartrdly agree with linny’s assessment that the punishment must fit the crime. I was spanked as were my brothers. And while we’re not saints, we are certainly productive citizens of society.

I also like to point out that our youth of today seems to be on the slippery slope of self destruction because we are moving away from corporal discipline. Discipline shows children that you care. You care enough about them to beat their arses when they need it so that they don’t get mixed up with the wrong crowd. So they will make better decisions as they go through life. And so bubba won’t have to spank them.

There is a line between spanking and abuse, but it’s not a thin line.

Thanks Amy and Jex

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 10:09AM EST
I decided on this topic because I read an article that some lawmakers in California were trying to make it illegal to spank children and that parents could even go to jail for doing so.

Posted by: shay on November 30, 2007 10:19AM EST
Hmmm, just popping in to comment on the spanking issue. War Eagle, I can see where the "law" would want to ban spanking because there are so many kids that are the result of child abuse; however, I don't think banning is a good idea for two reasons. One, our youth are already out of control. Taking the little bit of power we have as adults will only make matters worse. Second, do you really think that a person that seriously abuses their kid is going to stop because there is a law in effect about spanking. NOPE! These people have psychological issues and the "law" wouldn't mean anything to them and their actions. JMO!

BTW, good morning to all and good Friday. Hope you all enjoy your weekend!

There are also people trying to do it in Massachusettes.

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 10:32AM EST
Thanks Shay.
I agree on the fact that a lot of our youth are already out of control and I personaly
feel that it is directly related to parents not spending qulaity time with their children. This includes disciplining them when they do wrong.

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 10:34AM EST
Amy, Do you know where I can find an article about what they are doing in Massachusettes?

Do you have a link I can go to?

Well hello good people. Sorry I'm so delayed..this is my busy time of the year. I'll let y'all in on a little secret. I'm Santa Claus. I know, y'all thought Santa was male but, seriously folks, could a man pick out the perfect gift for everyone????

Jex...my favorite authors are Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Are we the same person???? Oh..probably not!

On the spanking issue: My kids got clobbered when I couldn't get their attention any other way. It only had to happen a few times with subtle reminders after that for a few years.

The movie I saw yesterday was No Country For Old Men. Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant, as is Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. It's a very strange and tense movie(NOT holiday fare) but extremely well done.

OOPS I forgot...Congrats to the Cowboys!

Yes,I wrote that wrong...keep your fingers ceossed!

Shay, welcome back to the blog..we'd love to have you back!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 11:31AM EST
Tennessee has a chance against LSU
Oklahoma has a good chance against Mizzou
But I don't know if Pitt can get it done against WVa.

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 11:32AM EST
I know....Pitt really has no chance at all..you never know!!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 11:34AM EST
And I don't like it that Ohio State can finish their season weeks before everyone else and still advance in the polls. I feel that if you don't have a conference championship game then you shouldn't be eligible for a BCS bowl. It's not fair to the other conferences that match up the best teams in their division. Just my opinion

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 11:50AM EST
Hey Eagle...My old lady loves the buckeyes...when she gets in rare form..she really shows her a$$!the woman can put away some juice on gameday!

Good Afternoon folks! WE, i agree on the spanking issue, but i have not had to spank my son as of yet. (came close though). I am dredding it too. Deirdre, i sent you a pic.

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 12:11PM EST
Eagle...When she falls in a deep sleep...i'll draw Uga stuff all over her...it's funny!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 30, 2007 12:13PM EST
Shaun, I now know what it means when my father said "this is going to hurt me more than it is going to hurt you." It is an awful feeling but I feel that it is for the best in the long run.

Posted by: on November 30, 2007 12:15PM EST
Exactly WE, i now know what he was saying... That is funny, because hearing it from my dad, I would be like "yeah sure you do, I am the one getting hit" lol

Posted by: Deirdre on November 30, 2007 12:23PM EST
Got it, Shaun...Thank you...I wrote an email back!

I'm trying to get mom to Kroger today....anytime she goes out, it's a big production. She had her pain meds upped last week which is both a good and bad thing. She's moving around a little better now but we're worried that she needed a higher dosage. And to update on my friend who has pancreatic cancer...she's still doing chemo and looking very much the worse for wear. It's going to be a very difficult holiday for her and her family.

On a lighter note, I have almost half my shopping done thanks to the glories of the internet. Those of you who are aware that I'm Santa are very relieved, I'm sure!

Posted by: AmyG on November 30, 2007 12:43PM EST
Santa, As I know you know the desires of everyone, could you please tell me what I should get for my mom? I would greatly appreciate it as my brother and my dad also have no idea!
:)
Thank you

Posted by: Deirdre on November 30, 2007 12:55PM EST
Don't worry, Amy...Santa will whisper in your ear while you sleep and let you know what to buy.....EWWW never mind...that sounded a little creepy!!!

Amy...treat your mom(and yourself) to a facial or massage. As a mom, I'd love to do that with my daughter...if I had a daughter.....not so much my sons, they'd ruin it by farting and burping through the whole thing!

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 1:32PM EST
*CHOKE*

Deirdre!!!! omg, what a "visual"!!!

LOL!!!

REALLY busy this afternoon.... see you guys hopefully at the end of the day!

Posted by: on November 30, 2007 1:48PM EST
D, I bet it is a drag being with all guys..... We cant help ourselves, Burping and farting are just in our bloods... lol

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 1:56PM EST
Shaun,sounds like my old lady...LOL!!!..GO RAIDERS!!!!BEAT MLK!!!!

Posted by: AmyG on November 30, 2007 2:11PM EST
My 2 1/2 year old daughter decided it was hilarious to pass gas last night and just let 'er rip a couple of times and literally fell over she was laughing so hard. In the end, all I could do was sit there and laugh hysterically myself.

Posted by: Deirdre on November 30, 2007 2:50PM EST
Back from the Kroger trip....Mom's meds must make her buy stuff cuz she came home with tons of stuff!

Amy...when a 2 year old finds out he/she can make that noise...all is lost for quite awhile!

At bedtime, I used to want to plug my ears along with my nose. I called it the aroma symphony! Boys!!! Yes, Shaun, I was definitely outnumbered. It helps to develop a sense of humor about gross stuff, cuz with boys, you're gonna get a lot of it!

I know linny has been in the same boat at one time or another!

Posted by: shay on November 30, 2007 3:16PM EST
A 2 year old?? My whole (grown) family makes weird noises and let things out of the wrong places all the time. I live with three boys remember.

D and linny, I am sure you can relate to being the only female in a household.

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 3:20PM EST
AMEN! shay LOL
but even when my niece lived with us, she was as bad.... well.... sometimes WORSE than the boys!!!

Amy.... there is just something about a 2 y/o laughing that ... no matter what it's about... you just cannot seem to help joining in, which of COURSE encourages their little selves to just keep on and on and on... but even today, when my 22 y/o gets laughing hard, it's all we can do to NOT laugh with him.... he's got one of "those" infectious laughs that just grabs your gigglebox!!! i love it when that happens, frankly!

D...."one time or another" .... um.... you mean one time A DAY or another????

Posted by: AmyG on November 30, 2007 3:21PM EST
Yeah, but you had boys...I guess her dad has been teaching her stuff that I necessarily wouldn't.
To see this skinny little blonde girl with pigtails start passing gas (and making as much noise as my 30 year old brother) and giggling so hard she passes more gas just broke me up.
I loved it and couldn't help but laugh with her.

Posted by: linnykat on November 30, 2007 3:53PM EST
i think that was part of the problem, Amy, LOL, her dad didn't bother teaching her much AT ALL! and she DID have an older brother in addition to the cousins!

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 4:09PM EST
Where did everybody go?i was just getting started and everybody took off!GO RAIDERS!!!!BEAT MLK!

Posted by: flat screen on November 30, 2007 4:17PM EST
Yall, that's so funny about passing gas.try having your other half doing all the time...:-(

Everyone have a good weekend

One more thing

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho's Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Rest In Peace

Rodney...I was just catching up with some of my dvr'd stuff and watched the Hollywood week for the second season. Simon must feel pretty foolish after wanting to cut Clay Aiken...and it was like all the other contestants already knew that Ruben was going to win!!! They all saw that he was THAT good!

I also watched the Tony Bennett week of this past season...Phil has a really good voice...I wish we all could have gotten past the bald...he really didn't have a good head for bald! I was also surprised that I liked Chris Richardson's performance as much as I did. Even Haley wasn't awful. However, Sanjaya
WAS!

Have a good weekend everybody!
