ABOVE: Here are shots of Kelly I took from about 20 rows back with my cheapo Cybershot. Robb Cohen will have a photo gallery ready hopefully by the morning and I’ll link to that when I find out what the url is.
Kelly Clarkson is a beguiling dichotomy. On the surface, she still seems like that sweet, innocent gal we all remember from the days of “Idol” when she would utter “Cool beans!” and cried through “A Moment Like This” after being crowned the winner.
But at age 25, she’s not only asserted her independence, her “breakaway,” so to speak, she’s channeling some serious anger issues percolating underneath her sunny exterior, much of it stemming from ex-boyfriends. Her boss Clive Davis tried to reign in the Evanescence-tinged cuts, tried to nudge her current album into more pop friendly territory but instead, she did it her way, got into a public tiff with Davis and watched the public reject her first single “Never Again.” Before Davis could say, “I told you so,” her summer arena tour was nixed due to slow sales and she’s back to smaller theaters such as Cobb Energy Centre Tuesday night where she sold out the 2,750-seat venue.
For die-hard fans, a more intimate setting was just the ticket. Clarkson proved as usual that she could sing the instructional manual from a DVD machine and make it sound great. Sure, some of the same-sounding cuts on her “My December” album aren”t much better than said instructional manual (“Judas,” anybody?), but if her label RCA hadn’t thrown in the towel so quickly, it could have pitched at least a couple of the more melodic tunes on “My December” to top 40 radio such as “Don’t Waste Your Time” and “How I Feel.” (The label inexplicably released the downbeat, hook-deficient “Sober” as a second single and it went nowhere.)
Over 18 songs and 85 minutes, Kelly was in top form vocally, with just a hint of a rasp. She hit all the big notes with only one exception that I could ascertain (she skipped the big high note on “Behind These Hazel Eyes” early on). She wore a garish purple satin getup possibly stolen from “Dancing With the Stars” with black bell-bottoms which didn’t exactly accentuate her strong points, but her always beautfiul smile and that trademark high intensity more than made up for such visual deficiencies.
And the crowd stood by her from beginning to end, singing lustily along to the big hits such as “Walk Away,” “Because of You” and the perfect pop gem “Since U Been Gone.” But they also treated her non-singles with near-equal enthusiam, including “Addicted,” her self-proclaimed favorite cut off “Breakaway,” and “Gone,” where she did her trademark pogo-stick dance. Heck, they even gave some of the darker cuts respect, including encore song “Sober” and “Hole.”
Her three-song acoustic set two-thirds through the concert was a highlight as her voice hugged every nook and cranny of the new venue, which opened Sept. 15. Her encore featured “Chivas,” the most playful kissoff song on her CD which she said she wrote at a bar on napkins after spying an ex.
ABOVE: Kelly waves goodbye after singing her final song “Since U Been Gone”
A couple of observations about the venue if you plan to go for future concerts: as you are pulling into Cobb Galleria Parkway off Cumberland, beware of seemingly helpful men with flags directing you into a shopping center and asking you for $7 to $10 to park. It’s a ripoff. Not only do you have to walk an extra block, but the venue has 1,300 parking spots for $5 right next to the venue. So keep right on going.
And how about this for bizarre? The Cobb Energy security staff “wanded” everybody and checked bags thoroughly, acting as if this Kelly Clarkson crowd might be packin’. At worst, attendees might be packing cell phones or maybe some Tylenol. Most concertgoers looked like they probably don’t even cheat on their taxes much less pose a danger to anybody. The search was more thorough than those you get at Philips Arena or HiFi Buys.
Also, thank you Sammie for joining me at the concert with my “plus one” ticket. He’s certainly not an obvious “Idol” fan— he’s a 47 year old Union City divorcee who looks about 15 years younger and works at Atlanta Dairy. He’s very gracious, very nice. Thanks for coming! And a shoutout to Erin (who I hung out with at the last “Idols Live” and “So You Think You Can Dance” concerts) and Jill (my Clay buddy from back in the summer). I hope you two enjoyed yourselves, too!
Here’s the set list, which is the same as those from most other dates this fall. She sang one cut from “Thankful,” seven from “Breakaway,” eight from her current release “My December” and one cover song from Patty Griffin. And not a second of “A Moment Like This.”
1- One Minute
2- Behind These Hazel Eyes
3- Don’t Waste Your Time
4- Never Again
5- Maybe
6- Gone
7-Hole
8- Addicted
9- Because of You
10- Up To the Mountain (MLK Song) (that Patti Griffin cover song)
11- Be Still
12- Miss Independent
13- How I Feel
14- Breakaway
15- Walk Away
Encore
16- Sober
17- Chivas (the bonus track on “My December”
18- Since U Been Gone

Kelly was phenominal last night! I loved the cover of Patti Griffin! She was simply flawless!!! And she touched my hand...so that was pretty cool! I was front row...literally...i had my elbows on the stage! It was the best night of my life and I'll never forget it! =) ILOVEKELLY!

Sat up in the balcony, but Kelly was AMAZING no matter where the seats. My first time seeing her live, and (as anticipated) the voice blew me and my wife away. I was so hoping to hear "Sober" and was finally rewarded during the encore. My only critique, after doing this for 4-5 years, Kelly was rarely talkative to the audience. It seemed she is still overwhelmed that almost 3000 people would pay money to hear her perform. Not that it mattered, the crowd was fully engaged with her voice. The show was well worth the money and the venue was perfect for the performance.
Last comment, we were also very impressed with Jon McLaughlin. Voice + talent. Wise choice on the opening act.
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 8:46AM EST
I can only give the biased opinion of a die-hard fan, but I loved it. I did notice a few technical issues when they started "Sober," but overall she sounded incredible.
A few other things I enjoyed were: 1.getting the audience ready by playing "You Shook Me All Night Long" as her intro. LOVED IT! 2. Having the riff from Back In Black over Miss Independent. 3. Jon McLaughlin. I wasn't aware of him, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I love her pseudo-rocker side, but my favorites of her are whenever it's her and a guitar or piano. Thus, Addicted and Be Still were beautiful.
As far as the concertgoers being wanded, I didn't mind it, but only because I managed to get my camera inside. :)
So, Rodney, did you like the show or not? (I'm not sure I can tell from the review...lol) And you are easy to spot. I mean, really, the only person sitting with a laptop. Would've said hi, but I was on the front row, Mezzanine. Great view, btw. :)

Good morning all..I love the new thred you put up today rodney!I'm back from vacation with the wife:-)!!!Life is good!

Morning gang.... what a lovely, if chilly, day!!!! So glad the concert turned out so well for everyone! Isn't it a good feeling? Paying to go see someone you admire, and having it all be a good experience? I hear the new CECenter is very very good accoustically---after all the Atlanta Opera has moved there ....
anywho.... gotta get to work, so i'll see you guys later! have a wonderful day, all!

Morning! So glad to hear that everyone enjoyed Kelly's show (well, kellyfan, I knew you would :-) )
My company has finally left and the house is peaceful at last.
Posted by: Jill on November 28, 2007 9:40AM EST
Thx for the shout out Rodney and sorry I didn't get to see you last night. We were in the mezz...went with a friend and her 8 year old daughter & her friend. It was their 1st ever concert and they loved it! We enjoyed it too and the venue is very nice. I'm still a big fan of Kelly's and after last night, I will go buy her new CD - even if it is a litttle dark.
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 10:03AM EST
LOL, thanks D....hope you get to enjoy the peace for a while.
and yes, Linny, it sure is a great feeling. I recommend going to that venie. It's great. Whenever she talked to the audience, it was so clear. She didn't talk a whole lot. I'm wondering if maybe she's trying to save her voice since she's been touring for a bit.
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 10:13AM EST
kf wasn't there talk of her being told NOT to talk, no interviews, etc., because of her voice?
and...by the way.... how ABOUT DWTS last night???? In my opinion, once marie was voted 3rd best, there was no way they could get it wrong....Helio or MelB, it was all cool. And the last dance-off....wooooh!
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 10:15AM EST
What would Idol do without Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood? Those two girls seem to validate the show. Other idols are getting a lot of attention as well. You can't say that the show doesn't open doors.
I was disappointed that Mel B didn't win last night but Helio was good too! I'm honestly surprised that Marie wasn't in the final 2. I thought her family was enough to keep her in. The number of times you vote is limited, isn't it?
Hello everyone! I have been next door a little bit this morning. I still dont like the split up it's like your sister moved out of town or something. Sad sad thing. Maybe some day all will be forgiven and we can all be in the same place at the same time. I sure do hope so. Anyway I miss you guy's!
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 10:38AM EST
We miss you, too, KPH. I know it's a lot more chatty next door but..this is how the blog used to be during the off-season....so us 'old-timers' are used to it.
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 10:45AM EST
Linny, yes, there was. I believe Rodney was the one who mentioned that on a previous blog. But I had heard that in the past as well.
D..agreed. Missed DTWS (not regrets...lol) but I heard from a co-worker what happened. Boo! I think Mel B should've won. Though, I'm sad Sabrina didn't make it further. She could've made it interesting.
Posted by: flat screen on November 28, 2007 10:49AM EST
I hear you KPH..I just hope when it happens..we can speak our minds agian!I hope new blogs blossom like flowers for a long time.New threads get me going like you wouldn't beleive. My wife spends all day waiting on new threads.GO DAWGS AND THAT YOU DO FOR UNITED STATES FOOTBALL!!!!!
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 10:59AM EST
KPH.... i know what you are feeling, but i admit i have enjoyed the peace and quiet! as to how long it will last, who knows. i felt unwelcome in the new home, and frankly this home is enough for me. As D said, we're used to the "down" time on the off season. We'll have plenty of fresh blood infused once January hits and with not only AI, but the new dance competition between Carrie Ann and Bruno's teams also starting in January, i think there will be plenty of discussion for everyone.
Rodney, I went to peek at Cohen's pictures... just wish there'd been more! I wish i'd been able to avail myself of the extra ticket, but I'm glad Sammy went along and had a good time!
It was good to hang out with you again, Rodney. I enjoyed the show. It wasn't a moving, out of mind/body experience like some of my favorite artists, but it was fun and I thought she sounded great. I liked some of the new songs more than others, but wish she would stick to what she does best, the pop mega hits. And I really hope she doesn't make a country album like you guys were speculating last night.
Posted by: flat screen on November 28, 2007 11:04AM EST
Felt unwelcomed!!!LOL!!!With that crew..LOL!!!!!sorry Linny....I'm just glad they left!!!
Posted by: huskies1 on November 28, 2007 11:14AM EST
First I would like to thank Rodney for giving me the privalage to attend the concert with him. If he ever gets tired of his job the AJC won't have to look far for a replacement :). I loved the show. Only two disapointments. One was A Moment Like This being left out, but I understand the reason. 2nd not being and active concert goer, the signs outside said no cameras allowed. Boy did security fail in that area, they were everywhere. I actually took mine back to my car. I'll know next time
The Cobb Enegry Centre is a very nice facility with a better than average concession area, just don't plan on taking your food to your seat. I would have loved to have heard Annie Lennox inside that place. Like Rodney said park inside the Centre's parking garage. Only cost me 5 bucks and I was in and out in now time.
Once again Thanks Rodney Sammy not Sammie :)
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 11:15AM EST
Erin...I agree with you. Kelly, IMO, is the best of the female pop stars. I hope she sticks with that. I know she's a huge fan, and a good friend, of Reba McIntyre and I'm sure she would be great at country but she's too good at pop to leave it behind!
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 11:18AM EST
Sammy....thanks for going to the show with Rodney! We were all kinda excited for you (and jealous of you) here on the blog! I'm happy to hear you had a good time!
I guess I am just going to have to ride both sides of the fence because I enjoy chatting with almost everyone on both blogs. Anyway I am going next door be back later.
Posted by: flat screen on November 28, 2007 11:38AM EST
Good Morning (almost afternoon) everyone. I enjoyed reading Rodney's review of Kelly's concert...I hope she is able to get her mojo back - I enjoy her music. I hope everyone has a good day!

Morning Amy! How's the little 'oven bun'? :-)
KPH...you're a good guy!
Posted by: War Eagle on November 28, 2007 11:50AM EST
Hey Flats, Congratulations on your Dawgs being ranked #4. The team really came together after the Tennessee loss. We put Bama away for the sixth strait season. I guess even a 4 million dollar a year coach isn't enough to make that team any good. Over all an OK season.
Posted by: flat screen on November 28, 2007 11:56AM EST
Thanks Eagle....I was at the Tech game keeping up with the score of the Tenn game..made me sick.LOL on Saban!!OVERRATED!!congrats on starting on the other hand agianst Bama!!!Uga and Auburn will rule the SEC next year!WEST POINT LOOKS AWFUL!!!
Posted by: Tom Rowland on November 28, 2007 11:58AM EST
Please visit the Cobb Energy Centre website for detailed parking information including a map showing the official $5 parking areas.
Posted by: War Eagle on November 28, 2007 12:03PM EST
Yea West Point Lake is in very bad shape but that is ok because the mussles and stergen in Florida have plenty of water. I think that they are more important than drinking water for thousands of humans. NOT!! Why are Georgians the only one that thinks that sounds Stupid.
Anyway Auburn is only losing 3 starters this year and I know that UGA is young too, so both should be good next year.
Posted by: flat screen on November 28, 2007 12:06PM EST
I dont understand that one either!!What bowl are you hearing for your Tigers??Peah?

Oh yeah...The toilet was taken off after the poop left!!!!LOL!!!!
Posted by: Lauren on November 28, 2007 12:09PM EST
I sat near the back. The venue was incredible. I did feel odd about having to be wanded at the door. That is out of the ordinary especially in first class Cobb County. On the other hand, Kelly was amazing! I expected Reba to sing with her. Oh well. I had two women sitting next to me that were yelling at young girls to sit down! Hello this is a concert! :) Her voice was flawless and she had tons of energy! Jon was amazing as well. He is more talented than most maintream artists. His song Indiana was amazing and reminded me of growing up in rural Georgia.
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 12:17PM EST
Mr. Rowland, thank you for taking the time to add the information about parking and wanding. It truly helps to get out the information informally... so many people have no clue what to expect, especially at a new venue!
by the way, i hear wonderful things about the CECenter and it's suitability for audio-arts! congrats to those who put that together!
Hey Eagle! I have to pass this along to you... my hubby works in the bar industry, in security, and football season in Athens is always.... ummmm.... interesting, to say the least! However, the local bars LOVE it when Auburn comes to Athens... the fans are the BEST behaved fans to visit our hometown, they tip better, and they are not as ... ugly, i guess is the best word, when they DO get a little overboard... i won't bother to say which teams are the WORST, but let's just say orange factors in the team colors heavily.
greg.... instead of rehashing the past, let's just let it drift away down the stream of life and move forward, ok? what happens, happens. but let's just move on, ok? please and thank you :-)

The worst fans in the SEC are Vols fans by far! And they like that reputation, unreal huh?
Posted by: War Eagle on November 28, 2007 12:23PM EST
Yeah, Linny I think we consider each other as kind of Cousins. It a good rivilry but it has never gotten ugly. Also there are alot of players from Ga. on the Auburn team. Thanks for the compliment to the Auburn fans.
I think that it might be the Peach bowl for Auburn but I haven't heard for sure.
YES Linny I am very excited about the DAWGS great season! :-)

SCREW THE VOLS!!!!!!!!I cant wait to play them next year!!!BEAT DOWN CENTRAL!!!!

I attended Kelly's concert last night and thought she was PHENOMENAL! She's got a great voice. I will definitely purchase her new CD!
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 1:02PM EST
Wait...Kelly (or, more accurately, her people) requested the wanding? Wow...where has she been performing?
War Eagle, congrats on that Iron Bowl victory. Total Bulldog fan, but glad you beat Bama. (After we bet y'all...LOL)
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 1:10PM EST
kellyfan...maybe she's worried about one of those ex-boyfriends she's been singing about! :-)
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 1:23PM EST
you know D, that's actually a pretty astute thought! She evidently has had some rough times b/f-wise!
Eagle, my pleasure -- every other year when Auburn comes, hubby requests to work, even if he's supposed to be off, LOL!
I know greg :-) you're doing fine... just reminding you ~¿@
KPH... you should LIVE in Athens, LOL!!!! there's almost as much excitement at the ranking as there was during the actual season, LOL! People are positively blithering about being #4... wonder if it would have been any better had UT lost and UGa been #1 East SEC.... never will know for sure, LOL
Posted by: War Eagle on November 28, 2007 1:28PM EST
Thanks Kellyfan,
I hope UGA beats the crap out of who ever they get in their BCS bowl game. I hate to see SEC teams lose out of confrence games.
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 1:29PM EST
oh and D... yes, hubby has some incredible stories, almost every weekend....
like the one time he tried to warn a drunk fella that he could NOT carry the open container (large cup) of beer outside the door... fella belligerantly slurred an "F***you" at hubby so he stepped back, raised his hands and laughed and said..."Fine... " ... Fella stepped literally 5 steps outside the door and away from the little "patio" (which is only about 3 feet wide in front of the door) when two Gentlemen in Blue stepped up and coralled him.... arrested him for D&D and open container.... The guy looked up and saw Hubby and went totally livid.... Hubby just shrugged and smiled.
Then there's the time....no wait! maybe i should start recording all his stories and write a book.... let's see "Tales from The Door(man)"
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 1:36PM EST
MsSmiles.... glad you enjoyed the kelly concert.... what did you find to be your personal highlight of the show? and anyone else.... it would be interesting to me to hear what sparked individual interest :-) especially since i didn't get to go (too far away from athens)
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 1:40PM EST
HA! D, good point. I hadn't even thought of that. But really, you have to worry more about ex-gfs than ex-bfs. ;)
Thanks, War Eagle. Good luck with the Peach Bowl (if that's where y'all end up).
Linny, LOL.
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 1:58PM EST
LOL!!! linny I was thinking of Bouncing in Athens as the title of your hubby's next book!
kf, I think you always have to worry about exes, no matter what sex they are! :-)
Posted by: War Eagle on November 28, 2007 2:04PM EST
Glad to say that me and my ex are better friends know than when we were married. I guess it depends on the circumstances.
Posted by: linnykat on November 28, 2007 2:06PM EST
hmmmm i'll suggest that...btw, i forwarded your comments to him, he was extremely appreciative of the feedback.... i wish others would write to him (i sent the book out to a few of the blawgpound at the time... his email is on the copyright page, so no one has to go through me to let him know how they liked.... or didn't like.... his poetry! it's funny, he published it a few years ago and there just was NO interest in poetry.... this time, he's getting a lot of interest... it's so gratifying to someone who's been writing all his life to have people come up and say "so you're the poet i'm hearing about" or "i hear you have a book out" or whatever! word of mouth.... can't beat it!!! (good or bad!)
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 2:06PM EST
WE...Have you heard Kelly Clarkson's new cd? She pretty much bashes the living daylights out of a few of her exes! She's obviously NOT your ex!!! :-)
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 2:10PM EST
I'll send him some more comments, linny but it won't be until after Christmas. Between blogging, shopping, taking care of a couple of people and catching up with my favorite novels, poetry has been back-burnered! I will get back to it though because I really liked some of his work!

No I haven't heard Kelly's new CD. I loved the Alanis Morissette Album that came out years ago when she had all of those ex boyfriend hating songs though

lol kf! cute!
well, hubby and i managed to be together 38 years so far.... not that there haven't been bad times, but we've managed thru 'em somehow.... but i was always friends with ex b/f's -- just always figured hey, if i loved 'em, they must have some redeeming qualities, and why not be friends instead of enemies.... it was usually their NEW g/f's that kept the friendships at arms' length!
Posted by: Deirdre on November 28, 2007 2:40PM EST
LOLOLOL kf and code guy!!!
Hubby and I have dinner with my ex college bf and his wife every couple of months. We even went on a trip to Italy with them..but then, he and I acknowledge that we were NEVER 'meant to be' so that makes it easier.

The reason we get along so good is because of how wonderful of a mother she is to our daughter. I have often told her that even tough we didn't work out that I could have not found anyone more perfect to raise my daughter. I have the upmost respect for her for that reason.

Kellyfan--I enjoyed the concert. I can't say I love all her songs off "My December" (Believe me, I don't), but overall, she puts on a good, tight show. And yes, she is a joy to listen to when she does talk but she kept the patter to a minimum, which on the most part isn't a bad thing.
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 3:59PM EST
So, Rodney, would you happen to know when Kelly's next tour (not with Reba) comes to ATL again? LOL.
I'll move to my other Idol. When do Carrie Underwood/Keith Urban tickets go on sale? :)

What happend to all the hendrick haters?????
Posted by: Rodney Ho on November 28, 2007 4:40PM EST
if the wanding was requested by the artist, maybe Kelly has some weird stalkers she's afraid might get in?

Another great day here on the old blog!GOOD NIGHT ALL!!!
Posted by: kellyfan on November 28, 2007 5:21PM EST
Now that's a sad and scary thought. Who knows these days...
Btw, glad you enjoyed the show, Rodney. You were sort of my "celebrity sighting." I turned to my friend, pointed below and said: "Hey, there's Rodney Ho." Of course, she had no idea who you were.
Posted by: Americal Idle on November 28, 2007 6:38PM EST
Nothing against Clarkson in particular but....What a sad time we live in when 'game show' winners get all of this attention, while a musical ICON like George Clinton comes to town and not a PEEP out this putrid example of a local paper....sad indeed!!
Posted by: kellyfan(from home) on November 28, 2007 9:09PM EST
Well, different strokes for different folks, I guess. She gets the attention because she's got a following, and this is the American Idol blog...just sayin'.
