11/29: Jordin Sparks' debut sells just 119,000
By: Rodney Ho | November 28, 2007, 4:08PM EST

As expected, Jordin Sparks’ new CD opened with just 119,000 in sales, by far the worst among all “Idol” winners. She barely made the top 10. This is even lower than my modest prediction a couple weeks ago of 150,000 to 200,000.

Here’s the count year by year for first-week sales:

Kelly Clarkson’s “Thankful”: 297,400

Ruben Studdard’s “Soulful”: 416,500

Fantasia’s “Free Yourself”: 240,000

Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts”: 315,000

Taylor Hicks’ “Taylor Hicks”: 298,000

Jordin Sparks’ “Jordin Sparks”: 119,000

It’s also worse than the opening weeks for Clay Aiken’s “Measure of a Man” (612,850) and Daughtry’s self-titled CD (304,000).

And this despite the fact Jordin’s CD was introduced during one of the biggest sales weeks of the year. Plus, she has a hit on her hands with “Tattoo,” which is currently No. 12 on the top 40 chart and on pace to hit the top 10 soon. It shows how she simply didn’t resonate in a way to attract buyers. Maybe she should join a Disney Channel TV show, work with the Jonas Brothers or Aly & AJ!

Yes, I’ve got Disney on the brain. I’m writing about the “Hannah Montana” concert at Gwinnett Arena. Pray for me.

Jordin will be at a special Q100 meet and greet Thursday morning. I’ll report from there if I make it.

Rodney at the Hannah Montana concert!!!!! I'm trying to picture you surrounded by thousands of tweens!!!

I hope Jordin's numbers open the eyes of the powers that be at Idol. Something was wrong last season and it wasn't the talent. It was the way the talent was presented.

Posted by: Misty on November 28, 2007 6:27PM EST
yeah, it was the ridiculous focus on the "mentors" that was wrong last season! Every episode, 10 minutes was wasted on showing their careers and their "words of wisdom". as if they cared about the contestants anyway! LUCKILY, i heard that they will get rid of the mentors next year. That wont help Jordin of course, but I dont think her album was very good anyway.

Posted by: tss on November 28, 2007 8:24PM EST
You all have to remember- Clay was the REAL winner of AI2 (two producers all but came right out and admitted it)- Ruben sold as much as he did because a lot of Clay fans also bought Ruben's cd (I did, but just could not get through the whole record). Clay resonated a vibe that hadn't been felt in many years-and he still does. As much as Jordin is very talented-enjoyed her performance on Regis and Kelly last week-she is still quite young and unproven at this time. There just isn't anything really 'different' about her right now. But I do think she can have a lucrative musical career.

Posted by: Justin on November 28, 2007 9:09PM EST
Hannah Montana, Hannah Montana, Hannah Montana. SO ANNOYING! That's all I hear is that Disney Channel crap haha....anyways could these sales numbers also be because many people have Ipods? That way all they have to do is download the music, not go spend $20 on a CD.

Posted by: Pam on November 28, 2007 9:37PM EST
I've wondered too if the lower sales might be due to the fact that everyone was downloading all the songs from the Internet at least a week before the CD's release. And every song was on You Tube as well! The CD was critically acclaimed in the industry, and I've bought both the ITunes and Walmart versions....and it's one of the best debuts of an Idol IMO!! I love all but two of the songs on it. For Jordin's sake, I hope that the word spreads and people will support her by actually BUYING her music instead of getting by with the Freebies.

Posted by: Deirdre on November 29, 2007 8:10AM EST
If Ipods are affecting sales THAT much, then some BIG changes need to be made in the music industry. Sort of like the Screenwriters' strike for a piece of the download and video sales.

Technology is changing the way we see and hear things...what also has to change is the way money is made by the artists and producers and the way sales are counted.

Good morning bloggers!

Good morning D...Another fresh blog on a fine Thursday morning!!!Lets have a wonderful day on the new blog!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 8:23AM EST
Good Morning.
So it's the Cowboys Against the Packers tonight. Anyone got a pick? I'm going for the Packers. I've been a long time Favre fan.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 8:25AM EST
Me too Eagle....Cowboys and Jerry Jones make me want to puke!!!!TO BABY!!!LOL!!!!!

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 8:34AM EST
Eagle...Do you like pro football?

Posted by: on November 29, 2007 8:38AM EST
tss, get a clue. Ruben fans bought his CD, not clay's... Their fan base is 2 different styles, dont get it twisted!!!!
Morning Deirdre, good luck today.

Posted by: flat screem on November 29, 2007 8:39AM EST
WOOHOO!!! GO DAWGS!!! I"M BACK AGAIN YA"LL!!!!! I HAVE MPD AND I"M GLAD OF IT!!!! GO MORINO!!! ME AND WE ARE THE SAME PERSON!!! I ENJOY TALKING TO MYSELF!!!! WOOHOO!!!! MY WIFE IS DRUNK!!!!! KERPLOOSH!!!! LOL!!!

Posted by: on November 29, 2007 8:39AM EST
lol

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 8:41AM EST
Eagle...did you see where UGA might get shafted by the BCS?

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 8:44AM EST
No I didn't hear anything about UGA. What's going on?

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 8:46AM EST
They might just take the Sec champ....Illinois might go to the rose bowl if ohio state gets in the title game.I WILL BE PISSED!!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 8:51AM EST
One more example of why there is a need for a playoff system in college football. As long as rankings are in human hands instead of head-to-head competition on the field someone is always going to get shafted.
Example 2004 Auburn 12 - 0 and can't play for the championship? Sorry to bring that up again but I'm still a little bitter about that.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 8:54AM EST
No,you should bring that up...Yall got the royal shaft that year!!!

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:04AM EST
No doubt, WE, that was definitely an unfortunate decision! Morning Deirdre. Wonder how long it will be before Rodney surfaces after sacrificing himself to the Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana melee! No offense Rodney, but better you than me!!!!! Urgh!

Shaun, how nice to see you this morning (well that is, if you are still around to see this)

For anyone who's interested, the gray 'flat screen' posting is more than likely truly an MPD and not the regular 'flat screen'. Interesting choice of impersonations. But bo-o-o-o-o-oring!

Deirdre, I agree.... unfortunately the industry MUST change. But historically the writers and composers have taken the short stick on royalties from music sales, and with technology, the artists are too. It's a shame, but what i DO NOT want to see is governmental controls put in place... every time they stick a finger in the pie, it seems to end up more finger, less pie. There has to be a better way!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 9:06AM EST
Morning Linny, Do you have a favorite for tonights game? Packers vs. Cowboys

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:09AM EST
Hmmmm. I have to go with the Pack for old-time's sake. Cowboys have always been "the enemy" ... don't know why (nana if you see this, no offense!)

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:10AM EST
Remember, Tampa Bay is "my" team... and it used to BE in the "black and blue" division with the Pack, Bears, etc. So now that we're out of there, i can sort of second-hand support that division, LOL!

Posted by: Deirdre on November 29, 2007 9:11AM EST
Shaun...LOL!! Thanks!

Our poor Rodney was subjected to soooo much last night.

I read the piece you wrote, Rodney...sounds like you survived just fine.

Morning WE and linny, of course!

WE, former blogger mynana will kill me but I kinda like the Packers!

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 9:11AM EST
Thanks Linny....It seemed like i was having a conversation with someone besides myself!!

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:14AM EST
I need to go read Rodney's report, i guess.... i'd be willing to bet (before reading it) that he wrote it last night and is somewhere hiding under a blanket and pillow trying to forget he had to go. no offense to li'l hannah-fans.... just Rodney doesn't exactly seem the type to be at a Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana event, yanno?

greg, my pleasure... so long as you maintain ~¿@

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:24AM EST
wow, Rodney! and i thought you had to deal with some crazy bloggers over here! seems li'l Hannah Montana/Miley Cirus brought out the venom in some folks over there! WHEW!

ok.... time to get to work, since i must ... see you guys later

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 9:27AM EST
Sounds like everyone is pulling for the Pack tonight.
Dallas is listed as a 7 point favorite.

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 9:31AM EST
LOL, WE.... well i usually like the underdog, so that's not much of a surprise to me! And it seems quite a few times this season, both in college and pro, the "odds" have been shattered and the "favorite" has ended up on the bottom... so go figure, eh?

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 9:40AM EST
I would love to see a good close game with Favre leading a game winning drive as time expires.

I have on my Green Bay shirt today with the "G" logo on it. Everyone thinks that it is a UGA "G" when they first see it. They say "what the hell are you doing wearing that?" I have to tell them to look a little closer a see that it is green & yellow.

Posted by: AmyG on November 29, 2007 9:46AM EST
I hope Dallas beats the pants off the Packers...I'm a lifetime Dallas fan (even when I lived in Washington DC)
Also, what's with the decision to only show it on the NFL Channel? That really stinks :(

I hope everyone has a very good day!

Posted by: Deirdre on November 29, 2007 9:50AM EST
Amy...it's cable and satellite's way of making us all upgrade our viewing packages!! They can be very diabolical!

Posted by: AmyG on November 29, 2007 9:57AM EST
D, I know, but it still drives me nuts.

Posted by: AmyG on November 29, 2007 9:59AM EST
I hope you all will think of me in a few years when I am having pity parties because I have to take my daughter to things like Hannah Montana and High School Musical - I have a feeling it'll happen no matter what I try to do (although right now she likes Van Halen and Metallica - so maybe there is hope).

Posted by: Rodney Ho on November 29, 2007 10:05AM EST
I'm currently at this Jordin Sparks event Q100 sponsored but I wasn't "pre approved" by the Powers That Be (Jive Records) to talk to her because I asked to come by so last second. Kinda silly to me because it's not as if Jordin is going to say anything that would cause the Powers That Be to quake in their boots. But no point in raising a fuss. No big deal. Adam Bomb of Q100 did a fairly unrevelatory Q&A for 15 minutes. Deidre-- Jordin did not say the word "amazing" a single time! Amazing!

Posted by: Deirdre on November 29, 2007 10:19AM EST
You have GOT to be kidding me, Rodney.!!! Maybe she listened to some of her early interviews and vowed never to use the word 'amazing' again. Lol!

The Powers That Be at Idol have been screwing up a lot lately!

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 10:45AM EST
Purchasing the NFL network...LOL!!!!!!

Posted by: Deirdre on November 29, 2007 11:08AM EST
Childish foolishness. MPD again!

I know there has been some bad blood between some on here but don't bring me into it. I have stayed independent on this issue since I started blogging here.

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 11:45AM EST
Greg. don't, please! the past needs to stay in the past.... let's move forward. PLEASE?

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 11:46AM EST
OK...That's over...Eagle,who are you pulling for in the sec champ game?

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 11:50AM EST
^5
Since we can't cheer for the Dogs or Auburn, LOL, and since i just HATE tennessee, i guess i HAVE to cheer for LSU in the SEC playoff. How 'bout you, WE?

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 11:50AM EST
Flats, it really doesn't matter much to me but im probably going to pull for the Vols simply for the fact that everyone thinks that LSU and Les Miles are so great. Right now they are our biggest competition in the SEC West so I want them to go down.

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 11:56AM EST
I know that UGA fans hate Tennessee and Phil Fulmer. I wouldn't expect any UGA fan to pull for them.

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 12:01PM EST
LOL, WE, and i'm not even REALLY a UGA fan... i just live here! I just know when Tennessee comes to Athens, it's usually a rough weekend! Oops, did i say that? ~¿@

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 1:51PM EST
Thanks Linny, He has a 1958 convertible T-bird that I would love to get my hands on. We both shared interest in classic automobiles.

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 1:54PM EST
omg omg OMG... that is my ALL time VERY favorite automobile EVER!!!!!!!! marry me??????

LOLOL!!!

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 1:54PM EST

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:00PM EST
Linny, if I get lucky I will drive to Athens just to give you a ride.

Flats, I tried Jim Bobs a couple of years ago when they opened up. I think it was pretty good but I don't remember. I prefer Roger's barbeque

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:01PM EST
Best wings ever!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:03PM EST
Maybe I will give them another try

I'm not kidding...hubby kids me all the time... that's the car i've wanted since about 1966 when i was a senior in high school, LOL!!!! Posted by: on November 29, 2007 2:13PM EST
Hey Linny, it may be a MPD but, if this type of talk never originated, there would be no backlash.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:15PM EST
:-(

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:16PM EST
Damn Linny it is. I was never real fond of the color. In fact I always told myself if I had that car I would get it painted. It just doesn't look like the color of car a man would drive. That must have been a popular color back then.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:17PM EST
Like you didn't post it boy!

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 2:18PM EST
I understand Shaun.

But my point is...why bother? And if you will note, flats is NOT jumping in and starting it back up. and i'm working as hard as i ever did before to encouratge him NOT to start anything, or to respond to troublemaking... and as far as i am concerned, personally, so long as the tone is kept respectful and b/s is not started, there's no problem. it's someone coming to the blog when there is no problem and trying to START a problem that i find reprehensible, no matter who it is doing it. we have not had any such talk in 2 weeks. why do it now?

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 2:19PM EST
AH.... Greg.... shhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! iggit!

Posted by: on November 29, 2007 2:20PM EST
like is said Linny, it MAY be a MPD, not so sure though.

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 2:21PM EST
OMG OMG OMG I'm dying here.... OMG OMG OMG.... ok, excuse me.... i'm swooning.

Yep, LOL, it was one of the most popular colors.... one of the few that wasn't Black or Navy or White or Tan or something dull. And back then, it wasn't unmanly because it was so unique, i guess. O geez... i am so freaking envious, LOL!!!!!! I hope you get it, even if you DO paint it.... it's just so awesome a vehicle!!!!! I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer that you get it, lol! How exciting!

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:21PM EST
I'm just getting sick of it...I know it's Shaun doing it.Please stop bugging me...half of my posts on here are not me!!!!!PLEASE STOP!!!!

lol

Posted by: on November 29, 2007 2:23PM EST
you are too funny Linny.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:24PM EST
I'm trying to enjoy the blog that i love!

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 2:25PM EST
well regardless, i think the best thing to do is to just pretend it doesn't exist. I do not plan to live in the past and am trying VERY hard to remain in the present and look to the future. I'm asking all concerned to try to do the same. No more, no less. The end. Ever and Ever. LOL

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:27PM EST
Linny, I doubt my chances are real good. But thanks for the wishes.

Posted by: flat screen on November 29, 2007 2:29PM EST
Good luck Eagle!!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:34PM EST
Thanks man

Posted by: linnykat on November 29, 2007 2:44PM EST
don't think it is Shaun, greg, so .... let's all just pretend that it's nonexistent, ok?

well.... WE.... you have to at LEAST get a picture of the car, ok????

LOLOLOL!!!!!

yeah, Shaun, I know....i'm a hoot.... but you love me anyway!!!!

Posted by: War Eagle on November 29, 2007 2:49PM EST

seriously tho.... it's always sad when someone leaves the mortal coil .... at least for those left behind. i hope that his worldly possessions will go where they're appreciated! and since you obviously appreciate the car.... ~¿@ ...

i just cannot believe that someone out there actually HAS my dream car, sorry i got so wound up there!!!!! probably seemed tasteless to some, and for that i apologize!
